The Slant Windshield Model A Ford
The Slanting Windshield; that's what Ford called it when they debuted an angled A pillar on certain body styles in late 1930 and throughout 1931. This subtle but significant styling change foretold the future of Ford body design for years to come. But...was it done for aesthetics or something else?

This phenomenon of celebs wanting to be seen in and around a "regular" car has repeated itself a few times, probably most recently with the 2nd and 3rd gen Prius. Automakers sponsoring them is another thing entirely of course, as is stars having such a car to drive when they *don't* want to be seen or hanging on to one for sentimental reasons toward that particular car (like Christian Bale's Toyota pickup).

Slant windshield is more attractive than the vertical version. It reflects Edsel Ford's styling influence. He liked the more elegant appearing European cars, but had a hard time getting his ideas past the increasingly hidebound Henry.

    • @AModelA

Agreed. Edsel used the slanting windshield on the earlier Lincolns and eventually was able to persuade Henry to incorporate the design into the Ford line. Thanks for watching!

I don't like the slants as the cars header looks like it's missing the visor with the way the top edge still has a lip tor the visor. If it was smoothed and rounded, I'm sure it would have looked much better and intentional instead of the car missing a part. If you have a straight windshield like I do, just open the windshield out a tiny bit and the light bouncing problem is solved.

I recently acquired a1931 model a 5 window coupe. The previous owner couldn’t tell me anything about it tho. The motor is stamped MINN 10xx Was there a ford rebuilt Center in Minneapolis? I believe the engine has been rebuilt there is no signs of wear in cylinders an still has cross hatch pattern on walls. Although the ordeals and other items aren’t worn either. Another wierd thing was it has a larger oil filler tube like off a B engine but still has the oil drain tube from the valve cover to block. Next step is to pull oil pan and check bearing clearance and see if there are insert bearings fingers 🤞.
