    A lot of people due to D&D use and see monsters as mere obstacles rather than creatures that fill a role in a setting / world. All creatures in a setting should exist for a reason, and so long as you have a reason you'll be off to a good start when creating monsters.

    Critique... This is an interesting and entertaining video, but not titularly, or opening claim- fulfilling. This is not a video on HOW to make monsters scary, nor is it applicable to any medium desired, such as for a novel or D&D campaign, etc. This isn't about worldbuilding either. "How to" videos (and such) are a step-by-step process to achieve a specific goal, not siting a laundry-list of previous topical examples. Examples are a "what" that reenforce the "how", not the how itself. Again, this is an entertaining and well-made video, but not a video that fulfills its claim. Maybe if you restructured it, then it may have been, but as is... it fails at its claims. Good luck with the channel.

      I see where you're coming from, but I disagree on step-by-step processes being the desired structure for a video on writing. It might be a little difficult to explain what I mean, but I find relying on step-by-step processes results in poor imitations rather than one developing their own ideas. I'd rather talk in examples and concepts relative to certain points (design as an example here) where in seeing something that works, the viewer might consider why it works, and thus have a better outcome than just having a series of steps to follow. I can't swear to whether it is more or less effective, but the step by step method never did much for me. Thank you for the input though. Even if I don't necessarily share your view on the subject, you've still given me something to think about.

    • @MarkLewis...
      @MarkLewis... วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@J-Bat Respectfully.... everything you've learned was accomplished by a "how to" method, (reading, writing, science, etc.) then reenforced by example. You believe in the example more so, because that's when the step-by-step instructions took hold. Step-by-step instructions and examples by themselves are weak but together are much more graspable. Tell someone, then show someone and they grasp it much quicker than just either one of them. But... you do you. Thanks for the response.

    I made what would be considered a predator monster for my d&d game. it's biggest strength is also it's biggest weakness. It's basically a Ambush predator that uses shadows to attack, both physically and figuratively. It will attack from shows usually by teleporting into someones shadow and attacking them from behind, trying to trip them and gore them with it's horns. while in shadows it's also semi tangible (mechanics wise there is a 50%chance an attack on it will just go threw it). if it feels it might be in danger it will teleport to some other shadow and wait for a chance to attack again. the reason this is also it's weakness is because if it's forced into an area of bright light it can't more around as well, not being able to teleport, it's not longer stealth and basically a tall thin, horned humanoid that doesn't have eye

    Wow, I can’t believe I’ve actually hit a lot of your points already with my own ideas. It’s overwhelming.😅 However, what if you have multiple monsters / supernatural killers in your story? Can you just reserve the slow build-up mostly for your main one?

    • @J-Bat
      @J-Bat วันที่ผ่านมา

      As long as there's something that makes your main one distinct from the rest, particularly in how it will feel to the audience, you can probably pull off a build up all the same. Many stories about vampire hunters or the like do so, as while they might be about one hunt for an individual in particular, sometimes they might take on smaller jobs until they become experienced/knowledgeable to take on the main threat.

    I don't know. Junji Ito is a pretty solid counter-example that the protagonist doesn't have to be that compelling for the story to work. Helps that his horror concepts and his visual execution of those concepts are so top notch, I suppose. But very few of his characters could carry a multi-chapter story.

    Lovecraft’s cosmic horror is largely a universe fundamentally indifferent to humanity. It lacks morality, purpose, or meaning that would align in any way with human ones. While forces in his work may clash against each other, they are not good or evil; they simply are. They exist as part of an incomprehensible reality-ultimately the dream of Azathoth, a blind and mindless god without will or purpose. If this creator were to awaken, the universe would vanish, as dreams do upon waking. This sense of insignificance underpins much of Lovecraft’s horror. Humanity is not at the center of the universe; it is insignificant, fragile, and vulnerable to forces far beyond its comprehension. The very nature of existence in his work is meaningless, stripped of any comforting sense of cosmic order or divine morality. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror was also deeply influenced by his personal anxieties, particularly his xenophobia and fear of cultural change. He saw 'the other'-whether in people, beliefs, or behaviors-as a threat to his worldview. This fear manifests in his stories as the terror of the unknown and the corrupting influence of forbidden knowledge or strange beings. The corruption of human values comes solely from those values not being fundamental, necessary, or even correct. The deeper horror is that we might be fundamentally wrong about everything. That all we think of as good, just, and true, are actually just the hubris and folly of man.

    Going into the video, I just want to say I recognize and appreciate the Artillery Witch in the thumbnail.

    I like this video, but I have to disagree with the story of Borrasca - a decent story until the end. The end was completely implausible and disappointing in my opinion.

      I don't entirely agree, but I can definitely see that opinion, so fair enough

    Whether something is scary or not really does seem like a coinflip for most people ^^;

      It certainly can be, people definitely tend to vary in terms of what they find scary

    I would say that an incredibly well-done example of a town-sized apocalypse is the Pathologic games. It's only a remote steppe village that's threatened by the disease, but the town is so vivid and alive-feeling it feels like the end of the world.

    I watched the 1990s Candyman and it's definitely up there in terms of horror and it very much is driven by the protagonist. Helen's curiosity clashes with her dismissive disbelief until one of these opposing forces crushes the other. Even in the end, she transcends by becoming the monster's polar opposite, a being of mercy and protection of the innocent rather than living off the fear and predation of them. It has this almost biblical quality while still being clearly a horrific tale. Next on the list is hellraiser
