The Sinking Of The SS Slamat
Hello everyone, it's Jamie from Old Shipping Lines! In today’s video, we’re diving into the story of a vessel once hailed as a proud ocean liner of the Dutch Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd-the SS Slamat. During World War II, she was converted into a troopship, but tragically in 1941, she was sunk in the Battle of Greece, a disaster known as the Slamat tragedy, with a great loss of life. Join me as we cover the entire journey of the SS Slamat, from her construction to her heartbreaking final moments. I just want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your support and engagement in the comments section. Your feedback, thoughts, and suggestions are incredibly valuable to me, and I love hearing from all of you. So, please don’t hesitate to leave your comments below and let me know what you think. If there are any particular ships you’d like me to cover in the future, please share them in the comments as well. Thank you all!

I'm honestly surprised that we totally abandoned ocean liners (vastly prefer jetliners) because it seems like a nice way to travel. Gives you some time to "get over" work or otherwise decompress and take some real time to enjoy a vacation or it doesn't matter whatsoever if you're moving for good. In my opinion we work WAY too much these days, I think four 10hr days should be normal BUT you get to piss off for a couple months. I fear some people actually enjoy the hustle though 🤔🔫 damned boring 9-5 types.

Jamie, Another fine video!! The EVANGELINE had an identical twin sister called the YARMOUTH. Between 1954 & 1966 the YARMOUTH's name was changed five times: another time as YARMOUTH, twice as YARMOUTH CASTLE, once as QUEEN OF NASSAU, & finally as ELIZABETH A. Both the "EVANGELINE" & "YARMOUTH" ended their final years under flags of convenience. AML-FRL

Jamie, Enjoy your website!! If you're looking to write about an "Old Shipping Line," you may want to investigate the "Fall River Line" which ran some of the largest steamboats in the world between New York City & Fall River, Massachusetts [1847 through 1937]. They carried both passenger & freight in night service. One steamer, the PILGRIM, was the 1st US vessel illuminated solely by electric lights, also the 1st with a double iron hull. She ran over an uncharted rock in 1884 causing a more than 100 foot [30 meter] tear in the bottom of her outer hull. She continued [under her own power] to her pier, unloaded her passenger & freight, then also under her own power went to a dry-dock for repairs. No water entered her inner hull.👍 AML-FRL

The ROBERT E. LEE & her twin sister the GEORGE WASHINGTON were coastal steamers entering service in 1924 for the Old Dominion Line [purchased by Easter Steamship on December 31, 1923 & incorporated fully with Eastern Steamship in 1925] to run between Norfolk, Virginia & New York City. They ran in "Winter" service in 1925 through 1927 between New York City and Miami, Florida, with an intermediate stop at Jacksonville, Florida. They continued their "Summer" service between New York City & Norfolk, but between 1928 & 1931 they were the "Winter" boats between New York & Boston. Subsequently, starting in1932, they ran year-round between New York & Norfolk. After the US entered WW2, they were charted to ALCOA. These vessels, along with other steamers built for Eastern Steamship from the 1920s through the 1930s, were partly financed by the US Federal Government, with the stipulation they be built for possible use in war service. The GEORGE WASHINGTON, a bit after WW2, ended up running under the French flag as GASCOGNE from France to the Caribbean & Indo-China. The GASCOGNE was scrapped in 1955.

Wonderful job Jamie. 17 knots must face felt like they were moving at a snails pace when under air attack. The captain obviously thought he was doing the right thing in trying to embark more troops after the cruiser ordered them to sail, but that extra 15 minutes may have cost 3 ships and a thousand lives.

Nice video concerning the 1932 Steamship ACADIA. The Steamer ACADIA had an identical twin, built at the same time, called the SAINT JOHN. When these two vessels entered service, their usual "Summer" duties were on the New York - Portland, Maine or Canadian Maritime Providences, & their usual "Winter" duties were on the New York - Boston, Massachusetts run. They also, between seasons, sometimes ran to Bermuda, etc. In 1939 both vessels ran special runs to Europe & South America to return American citizens to the United States. In 1941 [before the US entered WW2 on December 7th], both ships were requisitioned by US government to run on the Gulf of Mexico & the Caribbean for ALCOA; the Str. SAINT JOHN didn't do this but was converted into a seaplane tender [renamed ANTAEUS]. In 1942 the Str. ACADIA then was converted into a troop/hospital ship. In 1943 both ships were converted to hospital ships for service in the Pacific Ocean. Eastern Steamship Company's somewhat older twin steamers [1924] BOSTON & NEW YORK were also requisitioned by the US Government; they left for war service in Europe on September 23, 1942, but both were sunk by torpedoes, while in convoy, on September 25, 1942. The ACADIA & SAINT JOHN were small ocean liners, while the BOSTON & NEW YORK were large sound steamers. All four vessels have interesting histories.

Great video, Jamie. One of my mother's brothers was a crewman for KRL. He survived the sinking of SS Tapanoeli on 17 March 1941 and was reassigned to her sister ship SS Blitar. On 5 April 1943, Blitar's captain chose to leave convoy HX-231 which was en route to England. The convoy was steaming very slowly and a U-boat wolfpack was taking a heavy toll on the slow moving ships. Captain van der Knip made the wrong decision to leave the convoy. A number of U-boats followed the Blitar and attacked. She was hit by multiple torpedoes. My uncle was trapped in the wreckage and his fellow crewmates were unable to free him before the ship went down.

A fascinating history and a fascinating speculation about what might have been. My theory is that Seawise University would have had a rather short career. What with the enormous cost of maintaining so large a vessel, there have also been the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) safety regulations for ships. Eventually the liner would have had to major renovation to keep her up to code. As an example, a lot of woodwork would have to be replaced. Maybe wiring would have to be replaced? My guess is the Seawise University would not have lasted beyond or much beyond the 1970's.
