"I wonder if it remembers me." This line alone is enough to make me cry. Man, this movie hits hard. Despite all his other movies doing this type of genre, melancholic, this scene just hits so much harder than any of his other movies, except The Grand Budapest, that movie is a masterpiece.

People might not know But the fact Isabelle Blow is in this saying " I just dont think they got it " is a very good play on the role she played when she was alive . I dont know if Wes Anderson knew that but he's a genius nonetheless

I tell people to give it a chance, and to at least try to make it to the title. If they stop short I ask if they got to that part and they think they did, but they really didn't.

No movie has ever needed one person passionately defending it more than this one. I'm astounded it doesn't have more recognition in Wes's filmography compared to his other films.

Is it me or does the hip-hop community have a special love for weird art films? Because it's worth mentioning that _Fantastic Planet_ gets sampled a lot in such music.

It's that pretentious nonsense where the 'critic' trying to show everyone how we are all stupid for not seeing what it was 'really about'. At no point did either the creators of TG or Star Wars etc told you this was what their movies are about. You are simply projecting and fantasizing wildly.

My wife and I just watched this film and came to this conclusion - on the surface, it appears to hold nothing, but in fact it's holds everything. Not entirely unlike the ocean itself in that respect.

Thanks for this analysis! Just had my first viewing of this one last night after falling in love with Grand Budapest and French Dispatch this past year, while I was definitely expecting to enjoy it I had no expectations of it standing up to those! I can't wait to watch this one again

I remember watching this film obsessively on a 10th generation VHS copy of a Japanese laserdisc (with white spots hovering over any frontal nudity)- it was such an obscure piece of media then. Hard to believe (well not that hard, given both the brilliance of the film and technology tbh)that 30yrs on its now part of the pop cultural lexicon

Life Aquatic for some reason is my favorite of Wes Anderson’s films and one of my go-to comfort rewatches. There’s just enough of the colorful artificial fun of his later movies mixed with the emphasis on great characters in his earlier films like Rushmore. I think Darjeeling Limited benefits from this as well, although that’s much more somber and meditative than Life Aquatic. Also, Bill Murray in this era KILLED it with 3 of his best performances: this, Lost in Translation, and Broken Flowers.

The video for Crazy, Classic, Life by Janelle Monae also has her wearing the Alchemist's white outfit. Additionally, Erykah Badu once dressed up as the Written Woman from the film, and caught flack for it
