Life Aquatic for some reason is my favorite of Wes Anderson’s films and one of my go-to comfort rewatches. There’s just enough of the colorful artificial fun of his later movies mixed with the emphasis on great characters in his earlier films like Rushmore. I think Darjeeling Limited benefits from this as well, although that’s much more somber and meditative than Life Aquatic.
Also, Bill Murray in this era KILLED it with 3 of his best performances: this, Lost in Translation, and Broken Flowers.

To give an example Life in the Water is finished, it's been 20 years and it's the best movie in my mind, but I taste sorry for the way people don't understand and misunderstand the movie. It's not rated very high, and from what I've read of the reviews at imdb, the stupid and self-righteous movie critics have also pressed on with this detailed and honest work. People don't care about the truth, which is the biggest slight against STEVE. wes the director himself was not willing to come down and explain. After 20 years, the artistry of the work coupled with the drama of wes directing reality, I expect someone to find and have the ability to bring the truth to light. Do justice to this underrated masterpiece.

No movie has ever needed one person passionately defending it more than this one. I'm astounded it doesn't have more recognition in Wes's filmography compared to his other films.

    People might not know
But the fact Isabelle Blow is in this
saying " I just dont think they got it "
is a very good play on the role she played when
she was alive . I dont know if Wes Anderson knew that
    but he's a genius nonetheless

Steve breaking down a little when meeting the Jaguar Shark again is a similar beautiful ending like Fantastic Mr Fox when Mr Fox salutes the wolf. Both protagonists are able to interact with something they once feared/detested. In a deeper way they both face/acknowledge/accept more chaotic parts of this life. Ones animal nature and the unexpected challenges of life. Thank you for this video, the Life Aquatic is a masterpiece to me it’s my fave Wes Anderson film!

If you understand one of the Wes Andersons films, you will soon being sucked into this new way of film appreciation.

I think I identify or sympathize possibly with Klaus. Willem played this character like no one else could. He’s arrogant, confident and loyal. Also, somehow doesn’t think Steve appreciates his contribution to the team and seeks his love\attention\approval. That quick pep talk about the “B” team was all Klaus needed to snap back into lightning strike mode. Steve showed excellent leadership skills…even all through the movie. Great movie

Thought provoking analysis/re-review. TFS. 👍👍The first time I saw this movie, I'm sure I missed a lot of metaphors and references and still do (at least one of which you pointed out in the video - 'the ocean'). But on an more basic aesthetic and human level, this movie grabbed me hard the first time I saw it. I've re-watched it a few times since - and plan to do so again now, soon - something I rarely do with movies. It's one of my favorite films.

Very well done. This video has a vibe that matches perfectly with the Life Aquatic style.
This movie has always had a strong metaphor feel to me. The one underlying theme I took away from it was: staging the fake to appear real. That may sound a bit obvious, but it helps me explain the theory that Ned didn't die. It's probably more of a want to believe thing, but I think that everything sandwiched between the beginning and end theater scenes was scripted to be scripted. Steve's previous film had a major character die + a new, mysteries species. It flopped. He had to bring out the big guns. Major family drama, pregnant reporter, pirate shootout, and this time the "death" was followed by some serious emotional closure. Ned's "death" symbolized his transition from pilot to sailor. From the sky to the water via whirlybird, Ned became Kingsley.
Jane found her confident independence, Hennessey found friendship, the crew gets to keep working, Steve gets his fame. All orchestrated by the mastermind moneymaker, Oseary.
