I just got into bleach about a few months ago, and from the moment I saw their dynamic, I knew it was something I’d love. Their dynamic is so deep rooted in respect and equal footing, and so much more. IchiRuki is genuinely something I mourn even tho I haven’t gotten to the manga ending because I’m anime only right now but I do know who ends up with who. RenRuki I’m not mad at and I love it, but IchiHime feels so… bland. And it’s not even because I don’t like Orihime like most folks, in fact I love her to bits and pieces, and UryuHime is like my fave Bleach ship alongside IchiRuki. Honestly I love Kubos work but the ship direction he went kind of made me, not happy??? Idk, I’m just spitballing atp but IchiRuki and UryuHime are my entire worlds frfr

Wow, I followed this for the first few episodes and then got bored and moved on despite it being one of the primary animes running in the US at the time. After hearing about it from a woman's perspective I'm just glad I didn't waste my time on it.

I'm so glad you brought up the shoujo aspects. To me, that's what made Bleach great. It's a shonen body with the heart of a shoujo. Like Ichigo straight up admits his entire shonen power up arc during the rescue was for Rukia and that's what made him so fucking cool and hot to me as a kid. He built strength entirely for his love. He's a knight achieving kinghood for his queen.

I don’t think the female gaze exist because if you look at romance books written by women the male love interest most of the time have chiseled body and facial features and tall I don’t know maybe the female gaze does exist but it’s not much different from the male gaze

I’ve heard that the author based Rukia off his GF at the time, so she was the love interest… and then when they broke up he basically wrote Rukia out of the story 😅 bruh

I'm not a fan of you bringing up that the female gaze HAS to mean it's romantic. These two had a top tier platonic relationship. Like I would die for my friend we have a deep emotional bond. Doesn't mean I wanna fuck em. And yeah, they had way way way better chemistry than Ichigo and Orihime. Orihime is very in love with Ichigo (that scene where she tells him she would love him in every lifetime goes so hard) but it looked like he didn't see her that way. But it's entirely possible that she ends up winning him over, and she does canonically.

I love that they didn't end up as a couple. But I would have liked a love interest for Rukia.

I've heard it said that a lot of why Bleach works, is that it's a magical girl story, that happens to follow a magical boy instead. This video gives great evidence in support of that idea.

If you guys are interested in action shounen manga with female-centered romance, i recommend undead unluck! To describe the main duo, it's "whacky immortal asks an anxiety-ridden unlucky girl to help him die". It's really sweet how much the mc fuuko grows and develops thanks to meeting andy and trying to infect him with her bad luck, and she inspires him so much too. They both push each other to be better people, and at first fuuko is extremely reliant on andy (because people are trying to kill them and andy can't die lol), but her character development when they're forced to separate is incredible. Also it's very cute how he just carries her around in his arms during fights LMAO. The first few chapters are pretty fanservicy compared to the rest of the manga, but even then i don't hate it that much just because they ARE interested in each other even at that early point. Honestly, the story for the first few arcs is just okay, but the sheer amount of FEELINGS i got from fuuko & andy's relationship was nuts!!!

It’s not that Orihime is a bad character, it’s just that her eventual relationship with Ichigo doesn’t feel earned or believable. They just don’t have chemistry.

I love this couple, but after listening to the first 5 minutes talking about what is a female gaze, you lost me.

Shippers just can't let two people maintain a friendship deeper than romance.

I agree. IchiRuki appeals to the emotions, bonds, trust, and the idea of soulmate. I loved Ichiruki so bad-- but also realized that I never really liked Ichigo (how he was written) as a solo guy. He appealed to me so much when he's with Rukia, because it is when he became to have a "purpose" and "blending". Now that RenRuki is canon, I also realized that I love Renji as a stand alone character. He changed. He is wacky, he is nice, he is a try hard because of his upbringing. RenRuki as a consolation is fine with me. But still, IchiRuki will have a special place in my heart. Rukia is a great written character. Her struggle revolves around forgiving herself and saving her friends in the process. Also, she also has thing conflict about belongingness. All of those are solved at the end of the series. Sure, she can be harsh, but its a way for her to hide whatever she's feeling deep inside. At the end of the series, she learned to be proud of herself and solve everything that she had a conflict with. When it comes to Ichigo, I think I like the way he's written at first, a punk who wants to protect. But like... His character never changed. None of his morals changed. Sure, he leveled up a lot in power, but he had no moral conflict. Kinda boring. And Orihime. Okay, at first, I HATED Orihime. But I never saw her as useless. Now, Orihime is fine, she was just written so poorly. She has this conflict within herself because she would always feel useless. She gained powers to protect Tatsuki. But as the story goes on, Tatsuki was just a tool. Her and her friendship with Ori was just a shadow. :v Orihime's focus was ICHIGO. Its always him. Her insecurity was never solved for HERSELF, but for Ichigo. She's really written for the male gaze. Ugh

I so agree. I kinda gave up on Bleach but when I did watch it, I was like Ichiruki had that will they won't they vibe. And you mentioning the Authors perspective compared to everyone else, reminds me of Death Note with LxLigiht/Lawlight and how there was totally something between them but the creator claims that wasn't his intention and then he got all pissy and made another manga that basically had the same LxLight vibe. Lol sorry for my randomness

Just because you love someone doesn't mean that you beling with them or they belong with you. Sometimes loving someone means accepting the relationship you get, not the one you want.

It doesn’t help that at least some of the people behind the _Bleach_ anime were IchiRuki shippers and snuck in some extra scenes playing up the romantic element of their relationship that weren’t in the manga. Kubo was asked about that in a Q&A and stated that he wasn’t even aware of it, having maintained all along that Ichigo and Rukia’s relationship was strictly platonic. 😢

Honestly, starting down the Arrancarr Arc I saw Orihime taking more of Ichigo's focus but it never felt as romantic as IchiRuki. Part of me wonders if Kubo got some editorial notes to dodge IchiRuki because of the technical age gap from the world building (Rukia being supernaturally older than Rukia) but, I guess we'll never know. But yeah, the shift really happened abruptly around the Arrancarr Arc and it kinda makes me sad that we didn't get IchiHime fleshed out as well as IchiRuki given the direction that the manga ended up going with ships.

I love Orihime's design and personality but she's all wrong for Ichigo. Rukia & Ichigo feels like Harry & Hermione in the sense that they should have been canon

Something I never understood about these feminist systems of classification is why they insist on having one concept be for one sex, and the another concept for the other. In my own personal experience, I've met plenty of women who like to be horny, stare at, and objectify men, and plenty of men, myself included, who want a mutual emotional connection. Hell, most people are some mixture of the two ideas. Why must they be the exclusive territory of one sex?

IchiRuki is why the first arc is so goated, after that it's repetition with less and less substance, yet Kubo can't stop himself to make their relationship a highlight even though Orohime is endgame.
