1974-1980 Dodge Truck Brake System UPGRADE - 1977 Ramcharger “War Wagon”
Replacing factory brake boosters and master cylinders on the 1970’s Dodge and Plymouth Trucks can be a frustrating task. Parts stores across the web are “out of stock” with no end in sight. Today, no one is making a big block brake booster for our trucks. Many are trying to rebuild their stock ones or forking over the cash for a hydro boost setup. All across the forum you’ll find people struggling with this issue. “Where can I get these parts?!?!”
I want to extend a huge thanks to @stephenwest798 and @KLX1990 for pointing me in the direction of a braking solution that was easy on the wallet. I struggled to find any information on this topic so, I decided to record the install and share this tip with whoever is in need.

1977 Ramcharger UPGRADED with a 426” Big Block and a 203/205 Doubler
มุมมอง 1.4K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
What started out as a 360 small block full time 4x4, is not a 426” big block STROKER with a killer 203/205 doubler setup. Mechanically, this truck is back to ZERO miles. The powertrain is in the truck and looking HOT! I wanted to thank Woods Offroad in San Marcos, CA for putting together the doubler and rebuilding the axles. @offroaddesign1249 for making a sweet doubler kit, @talljohnsfunshop27...

Prepping the old drag car to stretch her legs at Duct Tape Drags 2024. Swapped out the street tires for some fat drag radials, tossed out the old shocks in favor of some competition engineering shocks front and rear, replaced the trans oil with Redline Shockproof, and fixed a nasty kink in the fuel line. Should be a lot happier at the track. Think it’ll lift the front tires?

For YEARS my father and I have been cars guys. To this day, we still build and drag race classic Mopars. There are few things in this world that can get your blood pumping on par with smashing the gas down the 1/4 mile. As my father and I now know, road racing takes that high to a whole new level. Since our birthdays are just a few days apart, I figured a father-son trip to the outskirts of Pho...

Just received the Ramcharger back from the good folks at Wood’s Offroad in San Marcos, CA. They completely rebuilt my 3/4 ton axles and performed the swap with the new 4” Skyjacker lift kit. This is phase 1 of their work. Phase 2 will center around the transfer case. In this video I also announce the power plant for this beast as well as the timeline.

Why you have double intake manifold gaskets?
Two separate sealing surfaces with the metal intake tray involved. Many just use silicone instead. Just a preference.
Hey, it's a non-numbers matching Swinger 340 with a big block in it. With MAACO, a lot depends on the manager/owner, the crew, your time line, how much strip-down & prep you do or are willing to pay for. People can run their mouths, I've had two pick ups done at the MAACO in Bellevue, WA and it's about 5 years later and the trucks both still look good. Perfect? No, but really good, especially for vehicles you use & drive. They did a great job, both are base/clear and both were a little under $9K - the bigger truck is an F350, crew cab, long bed and took 5 gallons of product to do....
Awesome! I just bought a Ram 1500 last week and it’s cool to see the off road abilities of the truck. Of course, I don’t have the 1” lift on mine so I’d need to be a little more careful.
Hey, can dropping the pan affect the transmission over time in a bad way? Many people say not to touch it, however im getting a similar problem like you and would like to change the same sensor.
Definitely need to drop the pan for maintenance. It depends on the vehicle, of course, but I typically change my transmission fluid and filter every 50k miles.
What is a billed I can do with a 361
What size wheels and tires did you use?
What headers did you use? Whats the tube size?
I used a set of Hooker Headers that I bought from Summit. P/N: HOK-5905HKR
My daughter says kick it daddy lol
Why are you screwing around with 1.6 rockers. Change you cam
I’m not typically one to follow the crowd. I enjoy experimenting with projects. I’ve got a decent cam in it now. Gona see how these rockers perform.
Rebel rims & tires are 1/2 again as heavy as the stock rims and tires (I did the same change). Increasing the height at the front of the truck changes your aerodynamics. And you're towing, which skews your mileage from EPA ratings a LOT. You can't compare a diesel vs gasser for towing. And all trucks these days will have bedsides that bow like that... They're making them lighter for better EPA ratings. Your complaints about the manifold is valid. But is covered under warranty.
The mileage shown was without towing. Ram rebels have the same MPG ratings so, the wheels and tires should have no impact. Leveling the truck most certainly impacted my economy. That was probably the only mod that truly did. Losing 33% efficiency by simply leveling the truck is pathetic. My old ‘99 Dodge Ram 1500 felt more stable towing on the road (although severely underpowered). While this truck was decent for what it was, I don’t see how they command such an astonishing price tag.
@@sorta_stock Well, I can't fault you on the price tag... But like everything else, prices have gone up way more than they should have. As for the difference between Rebel and big horn, I do not believe they tested both a Rebel and a "stock" truck. They're both 1500s therefore they both got the same numbers. When I went to the larger, heavier rims and tires, I lost about 1.5mpg of city driving. Which is what's expected according to the reading I did online before doing the swap. It's quite obvious that if you change the weight of the tires, it's going to cost you in mileage - all the starting from a stop is a lot of interia to get moving. As for towing, I'm not sure what the problem you experienced was, but I towed an enclosed trailer over 6000km across Canada packed with all my belonging that was well over 5000lbs. Through mountains in Winter. I averaged 13.8mpg for the trip. And I had no issues towing it, without any load balance help. Is it possible your trailer is not properly balanced? Is the replacement suspension you put in causing problems? Etc etc. In any case, I'm assuming it's long gone from your possession now, so it's a moot point - but I just think your experience is not the norm with these trucks. I'm on my 3rd and I stil like mine.
Looking good, have your seatbelt on when you stomp those brakes! You could use a piece of ridged tubing for a spacer where your pedal connects to the pushrod for your brakes, hell even a piece ridged copper water pipe would work. That will be a blast to drive with that BB!
I have some conduit that I looked at for that but, it was a smidge too big. It feels pretty sturdy as it sits. I shaved the bolt down slightly so, it shouldn’t move towards the head at all. Excited to fire this thing up!
@@sorta_stock I bet, if I lived out there and you were foolish enough to let me get behind the wheel, I'd help you smolder the tires. And I'm serious about wearing your seat belt if you hammer the brakes hard, those big tires bite. Ask me how I know.
Let me know where your going to find a pcv plug for that valve cover. I have several Mt valve covers and that's a problem. I would have plugged the oil filler off under the break booster. Oh you do know they sell a kit on ebay for this big block swap for 180 bucks out of a vendor in Iowa. Its a 7" booster and works great.
No idea on the plug just yet. Need to start looking. Just looked on EBay and couldn’t find a 7” brake booster for this. I’m assuming the guy is refurbishing OEM ones which, is awesome.
@sorta_stock well I will try to find it. A lot of this stuff is back ordered too. I have the same problem with my d100 drag truck. That thing needs power brakes lol
Subscribed! I'd love me a Ramcharger someday. The War Wagon is sick! And let me help you with that gauge panel!
Thanks man! Just checked out the website. That aluminum dash insert looks sweet. Haven’t thought about gauges yet. They can get pricey for sure.
@sorta_stock gauges are always the pricey part, I did a lot of work to keep what I do as affordable as possible while being made to order at the same time. I just made some stainless steel inserts for a guy and I'm waiting to see how they come out before I list the option.
I've lost reverse could that be my problem
Nice review have thought about buying a set, so this review answers the question of whether their worth it or not. My mopar manual says one thread below the rocker arm.
The year I graduated! 😅
Truck is coming along nicely, I agree I wouldn't paint it either. Nice job
That's a sweet truck 👍👍
Thanks! I’ve been excited to get this beast back on the road since June.
❤👏👏👏
You actually need a big block truck water pump housing, it exits low on the passenger side
This is a big block water pump housing. They switched output directions in ‘73. My 426 stroker is based on a ‘72 400. I ordered the pump correct for the engine and the radiator for the year of the truck. My fault. No biggie. I’ll work a hose setup to reach it
@@sorta_stock 440 source I think sells the aluminum water pump housing with a passenger side output, but either way, this rig is shaping up to be pretty sweet! Flingin' some mud!
There is so much room under those trucks without the stock tank in them. I run a tank in the bed and would love a doubler setup but what i need really is a gear change. 2.90 isnt exactly the greatest for big tires. 4 speed helps out aton though that manual swap 10/10 worth it.
Yeah those 203's are a pretty amazing transfer case. I had a little trouble with the one that was in my 78' W150, the splines inside the input shaft of the transfer case stripped out. I had a 4 speed on mine though.
The 203s are tough cases, but that spline issue is common if you weren’t careful with the input shaft.
Really enjoyed your video. Just subscribed.
Thanks Dave! Should have first fire here pretty soon.
The one-ton trucks use the small diameter short boosters, rockauto has them. I have an 84 dually so you got me thinking because I have run a 440 in it with no problems. Guess I'll have to order the complete master cylinder booster setup for my 83-ram charger as I have one-ton axles in it and may stuff a BB in it. 4inch lift with 35-inch tires.
I’ve seen some listed online for sale however, they all show backordered with no expected availability date. They have for the last 4 months at least.
@@sorta_stock I just checked rockauto and they had the boosters less master cylinder available for around a hundred bucks. And they have the master cylinders sold separately. I checked for an 84 d350 Dodge at 10:12pm this evening.
I found and just ordered the one you are talking about. Got my fingers crossed it shows up at my door soon. Thank you!
@@sorta_stock Glad to be of some help. Got to keep these old Mopars on the road.
You can swap in a d250/d350 dual diaphragm brake booster (9" diameter) the only difference is the use of a 2 bolt master vs the 4 bolt and I believe metric fittings on the master cylinder
I’ve looked for the D250/350 and W250/350 boosters but, all appear to be out of stock as well. Some wait to tell you until you’re at the purchase point. Super annoying. I could always retrofit a universal setup if it comes to it.
@@sorta_stock showing instock for me on rock auto for a 90 d250 gasser. Like he said 2 bolt and im not sure if the pushrods are the same length i would have to go out and check my trucks. New too not rebuilt rusted garbage
Just ordered the new unit that now shows in stock on Rockauto. Got my fingers crossed it shows up at my door this week. I’m hoping the pushrod is the same but, nothing an adjustable one can’t fix.
Cool. Nice work Jeremy. The core support came out of a 75 D100.
Crazy to think there are parts from 6 different vehicles on this beast. From the outside, one would never know.
@ That’s pretty crazy.
That's so cool it's getting there. Looking forward to hearing that 426.
Do a hydroboost system start to finish a to z so I have a parts list and how to when I do mine😊
I’ve got the 2019 Limited 5.7 with eTorque and the 3.92 rear and I get 22 on the road and 18 in town. Pulling our 5800# camper is great but we do have the tow package with trailer brakes. Towing we get about 9.5mpg
Does the gen 4 8.4 have any problem?
The gen 4 V10 has been regarded as one of the best V-type engines to ever be produced from Dodge. In stock form, there have been no significant problems identified.
absolutely wanted to see the tig weld part....
Dave is making your Superbird way too nice!
I’m beyond excited to get that car home. Dave does good work and should make the rest of the build relatively straightforward for me. Not sure what the power plant will be but, I know the stock 318 will be gone.
360 sounds good! Just through a 4 barrel with new manifold on it. I have a 360 Custom Ramcharger myself that I bought new in 1977. Love um!!
I don't know about a 426 killer cause the 426 was BAD.
Nice!
Awesome Project. I had a numbers matching 70 Coronet 440 RT. FUN CAR. Now building a 500 hp 73 Scamp. MOPAR OR NO CAR.
What a cool 70 but if I’m not mistaken those scoops are on the wrong sides. Shouldn’t slope outwards.
A good tune up and a paint job, beautiful
That need a mechanic
Time well spent...
The stroke on all Chrysler "B" blocks was 3.375 inches or 3 and 3-eigths inches. It was not 3.38 inches. That measurement was an early typo on some sales literature.
what I'd really like to do my self is put a stock brand new 340 camshaft in a 318 for budget performance
Curious what trans you have and what you had to do to hook it up with adapter, yolk etc. to get it put together
727 with a conversion u-joint. 7260 to 1350
Where is this? Looks like Antelope Valley California
Off of I-5 just south of the grapevine
Yes that’s been someone’s plan for 30 years.
It’s highly visible from a major freeway so, you know the owner has been asked about it.
I wonder how many years it's been there?
Looks to be decades. I bet there’s not a whole lot of structural rust though. It’s in a very dry area
My daughter always says “listen to that sweet sweet baby purr!” when she hears that v8😂
Love it lol. My son is fascinated with which cars on the road are “fastest”. When a faster car appears cruising alongside us… “dad, you could totally beat him” 🤣
Stock 318??
Yup. 318 poly
