The N51 is the Super Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) version of the N52. The N51 has lower compression (possibly different piston design), smaller injectors, a different intake manifold and of course a different tune for better fuel economy.

@rebuildrevival what one is more reliable? And is a n51 any good?

@ I honestly don’t know if there is much of a difference in reliability as they are exactly the same from a design standpoint but I have heard if you put an N51 Intake on an N52 it’ll have a better torque curve.

A couple options to refinish depending on the condition. One, you can clean, cut and polish, then hit it with some ceramic. Two, clean, sand and clear coat. Mine had damage inside the headlight which is why I chose to replace the lenses. If no damage inside, definitely just refinish!

Swapped out an N51 for an N52, not what you would traditionally call a swap but technically still an engine swap. Thanks for the comment though!

The original N51 was toast and I got a great deal on this N52! If you were to do some tuning the N52 with the N51 intake is supposed to be a great combo also.

I will be trying a blend on this black e90 I have in the shop right now, I think non metallic which I believe will be easier, let’s see!!

So far so good, I did sell the car but haven't heard anything back from the buyer. I think you just need to make sure all of the old sealant is gone and heat it while applying the new sealant.

Temps are good, they sit around 180 under normal driving conditions but earlier this year on an extremely hot day it got up to about 205-210 . Wondering what other people’s temps are at with a similar setup?

The water pump was bad and the radiator had a small hole in the top so both needed to be replaced so I figured I would just do the thermostat at the same time. The temps weren’t higher than normal just wanted to do it as a preventative measure.

The original one is 190 Fahrenheit but a lot of people run colder ones to try and keep engine temps down

Hey thanks, I can’t remember exactly what I had to do but I did buy a used DME and I believe I did need to program it to the car, I don’t know if I showed that or not without going back and watching though.

I totally agree, it was my first time trying this and if I were to need to do something like this again, I would actually just buy a good used OEM set that needed to be refinished and go that route. I would only open them if I wanted to do any upgrades or alterations.

It will depend on what you’re going to do while you’re in there. Just to pull the headlights and replace the lenses, is easily doable in a day or two without any hiccups. Just make sure you have all the right tools and materials.

@@rebuildrevival I think I am just missing the plastic rivet tool and the permaseal but I was hoping to just use like a gasket-making silicone. The permaseal seems really hard to work with. Oh and I also need a bunch of clamps... Yeah, I just want to replace the clear plastics basically. And probably do some cable management so I can cram in some 'CANbus decoders' for LED replacements of halogens. I guess I could just throw it all in there, but might as well do it well if im gonna go through the trouble of removing the bumper. If I actually do it... I did order the lenses now I just need the self motivation. lol. I was just gonna buy new assemblies but they are too expensive.

Hey, I didn’t do any programming or coding. Since I used the N51 intake manifold, exhaust, injectors/fuel rail and a few other sensors and components that the N52 didn’t have it works as it should. If you wanted to get the most performance out of the swap that may be a different story. I did reset the DME adaptions since there may be some differences in the air fuel mixture.

Sometimes when I’m labeling I’ll even write “left front passenger head” or “bottom of engine right” or sometimes I forget to label all together and have to hunt for 30 minutes just for one connector!

Hey, that might be tough as I believe the control module in the transmission needs to be paired to your CAS and DME. If you were able to pull the harness, DME, and CAS module out of the car where you got the engine/trans that might work. Without spending a bunch of time researching this, it is a little over my head! Search around on the forums for auto swapping a manual e90.

@ I have rebuilt my headlights for the e60 PreLCI and I also changed the project to us for the EVOZ-R 2.0. And the outcome of the light is crazy. The problem with the OEM projectors is, that the parabolic mirror inside of the projector will burn out and the light outcome is pretty bad.

Honestly, I don't know that's its worth the time unless you are going to do any modifications or upgrades while your'e in there. I would have rather found a faded used set and refinished them then sold these for parts.

@ so when doing upgrades, do you lose the adaptive part of the headlight?

@@toddrobinson9502 depends on what you do, it’s possible to upgrade or modify some parts without loosing the adaptive functions, for example the halos, or just color changing some interior plastic pieces.

Thanks appreciate it, the N51 has a variable length intake manifold which gives it a better torque curve but the N52 has a higher compression ratio, when you utilize the N51 Intake manifold on the N52 it gives you the best of both worlds.
