Black 3.0 vs Army Painter Matt Black: Is the "Blackest Black" Any Good for Miniatures?
In this video, I compare Black 3.0 against Army Painter Matt Black for painting miniatures. Blk 3.0 by Stuart Semple, also known as one of the "blackest black" paints you can buy has been of high interest to miniatures painters and scale modelers for a long time.
1. Matt Black (Army Painter) - amzn.to/4beHXyx
2. Blk 3.0 (Stuart Semple) - www.culturehustleusa.com/collections/paint/products/black-3-0-the-worlds-blackest-black-acrylic-paint-150ml
In this head-to-head comparison, I share my insights on how well these black paints perform when applied with a regular paint brush to two pewter miniatures from Privateer Press (Menoth Wrack models). I evaluate how smoothly and evenly they coat the primed miniatures, as well as their effectiveness as base coats for layering other colors.
Note that Musou Black, a clear competitor to Black 3.0 is available, too: amzn.to/3XdeEs0
By popular demand, I also test the ease of applying advanced blending techniques over these two black paints as base coats. Given that Black 3.0 has a rougher texture or surface finish, which contributes to its "super black" appearance, I expected it to be more challenging to paint over. However, to my surprise, Black 3.0 worked excellently as a base layer for various techniques.
Using the primed miniatures, I begin with my standard base coating approach using a regular paint brush. Both black paints were used undiluted, straight from the bottle. To maintain paint flow, I kept my bristles dampened with water, so the only extra moisture came from the brush itself.
While Black 3.0 is a much thicker, more viscous medium compared to Army Painter Matt Black, it worked fine. Despite its "scratchy" feel due to larger pigments, this did not affect my ability to use the paint. Although Black 3.0 may appear as a dark gray under certain lighting conditions, it has a much lower contrast finish than Army Painter black paint (or any paint I've tested before).
Painting over both black paints was enjoyable. I did face more of a challenge blending paint using wet blending or loaded brush blending over the Black 3.0 base. However, with a bit more patience, I was able to perform the same techniques as easily as over the Army Painter black base.
Metallic paints often present challenges for smooth, even coverage. However, I encountered no issues using steel or gold metallics over either black paint brand.
The final results were similar. Upon closer inspection, Black 3.0 does create a truly dark shadow effect.
Both black paints were durable, showing no signs of chipping, rubbing off, or flaking. In general, I couldn't find a clear limitation. While others have noted potential toxicity issues with Black 3.0's pigment if sprayed or rubbed off, a good protective sealer like Testors Dullcote should lock in the paint and prevent any issues. I always recommend varnishing miniatures for best results and longevity, especially for tabletop gaming models that will be handled regularly.
Key Points:
1. Both Black 3.0 and Army Painter Matt Black coat miniatures smoothly and evenly, serving well as base coats for layering colors.
2. Advanced blending techniques are achievable with both paints, although Black 3.0 requires slightly more patience due to its texture.
3. Both paints are durable, showing no signs of chipping or flaking, and work well with metallics and various painting techniques.
Have fun! I hope you enjoy this video.

    Beautiful result and super easy and succinct to follow. My "airbrush" Army Painter metallics instantly clogged, and the metallic acrylic inks I'd bought did the same (I generally have very good results from Liquitex), so I'll try this again with a few more layers of thinner. Thank you so much.

    Hi, i run out of black paint, thinking about ordering black Mat Primer from GSW. Can i use it as black Paint also ? What is the difference between Black Stallion and Black Mat Primer ? Thanks

    • @tangibleday
      @tangibleday 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A black primer will not the same as a paint. Hobby Primers are designed to shrink as it dries to smooth out surface imperfections in a model. This makes them unreliable when mixing or thinning applications for blending or other advanced miniature painting techniques. Use black stallion paint for normal painting. Just use the black primer for undercoats to prepare the model for “regular” painting. Here’s a blog post I wrote with some more info. tangibleday.com/5-professional-miniature-priming-tips-for-best-results/

    Mate. You've ruined the reason why Black 3.0 works the way it does ("fuzzy" structure) when you varnished it.

    • @tangibleday
      @tangibleday 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed. I noted that in another video. But the difference with or without varnish is subtle and both test models got the same varnish treatment. Also it doesn’t matter either if the models are handled. If you don’t varnish, it defeats the purpose of using black 3.0 on gaming minis. Can’t really touch it, safely. Varnish is a must for practical reasons.

Both the Vallejo and Pro-cryl primers where after 24 hours of curing it is still wanting to flake off. I do thin both primers just a few drops and run my compressor at about 30 psi. • @tangibleday
      @tangibleday 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! An often overlooked problem that may lead to the primer not sticking to your miniatures is the need to clean the model first. Miniatures often have a thin layer of oil or lubricant on them that repels primer or paint. Try washing your models/miniatures with warm soapy water, letting them dry completely, before priming them. This may solve the issue you're having! GL :D

    You should look at golden soflat black or turner acrylic gouache jet black(this is aniline black, so try not to lick your brush but it is blacker than carbon black and less gritty than black 3.0 while also being durable to the touch unlike 3.0/4.0), they are vastly superior to everything culture hustle puts out. Black 3.0 is actually not good to use as it causes carcinogenic compounds to disperse in the air over time as it's binder is way too weak to support it's pigment load. There is a reason why companies say max pigment load and not high pigment load, this is because acrylics have a very specific maximum amount of pigmentation they can support and its way less than you would think.

    • @tangibleday
      @tangibleday 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ah good to know on tox for blk 3.0. I did varnish the paint, so maybe that keeps the aerosolizing of the pigment low. Also, another commenter said it works best if it’s airbrushed but I didn’t think that was necessary here. I will take a closer look at the other two blacks you suggested! Those aren’t well known to miniature painters but could be interesting to try! Thanks for the comment about pigment load (max vs high)… I’m learning quite a bit putting these tests together. :)

    • @Drezrale
      @Drezrale 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@tangibleday I work as a material applications specialist within the coatings industry and we recently just started testing hobby products as a few companies have broken a few federal laws by shipping banned chemicals, chemicals that require specific labeling before sale, or have very deceptive marketing along with other things and I'm watching videos just to gauge. So feel free to ask any questions, I've been into scale modeling myself for almost 30 years now and do like talking to people within the hobby about this stuff. I would also avoid spraying black 3.0 as its micronized carbon black which is insanely carcinogenic and can cause a lot of health issues when inhaled unless you have proper PPE. Depends on the varnish, most artist ones are a removable layer for cleaning so what they are designed to do is yellow and flake off to protect against environmental contaminants, with some also having something UVLS which protects the paint from fading as quickly. Not all varnishes have thing. Automotive is one of the best for protection but can't stop a lot of things and a lot of the beloved hobby products like dullcote and model masters are actually in rustoleum's main line now too and for a much cheaper price. Golden is sort of known in this hobby as I've seen a few mini painters review it and most seem to love soflat, turner however is completely unknown to most people and is a complete sleeper it. Oh one small minor thing that doesn't matter as I know you guys mean something else by it, but coverage in my industry is a calculation of how much surface area a bottle can cover with a complete coat with no splotches or missing spots and has little to do with opacity. Covering power is the metric for opacity and its based off a public 4 grade scale and an internal 8 grade scale. This is only important to know if you start learning pigments or use professional paints as these are the terms they use, this also applies to house paint. Reflectivity would be sheen. Anywho good video. 👍

    From what I have read and watched on Stuart Semple's Black 3.0 and 4.0 both is that they need to be applied with airbrush, and left unvarnished for blackest results, and there are issues with durability, and with 4.0 there is a chalkier finish texture. Awesome. Yeah I love Reaper paints too. They dry really matte. The tabletop wargaming model from Privateer Press. It’s called a Fane Knight (part of the Retribution of Scyrah faction).

    I've been trying to figure out drybrushing for basecoats. So I get that I shouldn't be thinning the paint much if at all, but how much moisture do I still want on the brush. Is it like regular drybrushing where you get rid of almost all the moisture?

    • @tangibleday
      @tangibleday หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Good question. Just use paint undiluted. I load the dry brush from a wet palette, so there may be some extra bit of moisture but not much. Look how I touch the dry brush to the side of the painting handle before painting with it. You want a “regular” paint moisture loaded on the brush to use the drybrush for base coating. I hope this makes sense and is helpful.

    I feel like you need more contrast for it, but this is nice for a table top figure

    • @tangibleday
      @tangibleday 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I agree. It also depends on the kind of black material. Push contrast too high and it looks glossy black rather than matte cloth.
