Using DAWN DISH SOAP works so much better is the ultrasonic Mr Magoo Milo, Maine
You're a brave man taking on this one! 😅 However, instead of all the faffing around you and others do, cleaning with scratchy screwdrivers and wot-not, why don't you just use a pressure washer to start with, take it apart and pressure wash it some more seeing as the engine on this one was clearly from the start going to be in need of replacement or a lot of TLC - and then start cleaning it with a brush and soap and and why not take off the bumper spikes before finishing the cleaning job? You are not the only one I've seen do this, is there a reason, it doesn't seem to make any sense to me to leave it on, and then decide to take it off and clean it too. I can't believe you went over the badging with a metal tool just to clean the oily crap off it! I'm not that familiar with Stihl badging but couldn't it scratch it? Is there a reason you put the pull spring back in but by bit rather than just pulling it tight outside of the housing FIRST before then dropping it into the housing?
OK. With out the tools. I can clean the filter and the outside dirt and saw dust/chips. Tell me what else is there a home owner, using the chainsaw can do to clean .? I have a Stihl MS 170. Live in Florida and Hurricanes ... Mostly used for limbs smaller then 18 inchs.
Great Video Thanks !
Thank you for all info!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Epic restoration. Well done.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. Have a great day.
Looks like you used a cleaning solution in your ultrasonic cleaner that etched the aluminum carb? I know many heavy duty cleaners say explicitly not to use on aluminum. Simple Green HD (purple stuff) is good and won't etch alu!
Appreciate you watching and commenting. The carburetor is fine. The color a changed a bit slightly once it dried, however Simple Green will change the color much much more. I have tried many different cleaners over the years and I have found La’s Totally Awesome to work really well, and it’s cheap too. Simple Green works as well though. Thanks again.
Back in, I think it was 1991 or 92, I was a kid who loved chainsaws. I would hang out at the local saw shop and just stare at saws. No internet then so the guys would give me brochures and let me hold the saws. Good sports. A lot of people thought I was weird. And I probably was (Am??) but it's so great that with the advent of the communities like you have grown on your channel, us quirky ones with uncommon passions and hobbies can come together.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I love hearing about those early sparks of passion-what a cool memory to have of hanging out at the local saw shop and soaking it all in. And hey, being "weird" just means you're original! I'm so glad this community can be a place for people like us to connect and celebrate these unique interests. Keep being you, and thanks for being a part of this journey! Thank you for watching and commenting!

God the live laugh log bars on the cheap stihl’s are so ugly lol
What is a live laugh log bar?
@ Any stihl bar with that awful “light 04” font
Oh. I see. lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.
WOW!!! THANKS, FOR THIS GREAT, INFORMATIVE/EDUCATIONAL DEMO VIDEO!!I HPWEVER,... I DOUBT THAT ANYONE TEARS DOWN THEIR CHAINSAW, ENTIRELY, AFTER EVERY USE, JUST TO "CLEAN IT".....
Of course nobody is expected to disassemble their saw to this level every time they use it. Periodic maintenance, after every use, will keep their saw from getting to this point. This was an extreme case. I think it was Ben Franklin that said "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks!
You bet! Thank you for watching and commenting.
Good to see you are sorting things out 👍🏼. Wishing you all the best for the future and your family.
Thank you! I am very excited for what the future holds.
Happy Thanksgiving Chainsaw Ace! Your videos are amazing, and I honestly learn so much. Great tutorials. I can't wait to see the new upcoming video on that Poland F.
Thank you Karen!
Good video! Original sprocket, plug and bar? Used but low hours? Sweet saw now.
Appreciate you watching and commenting!
Happy Thanksgiving, and Good Luck to you in the future.
You too Richard. I have a lot of content planned. Let's see how this goes! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the update. Fully understood here. You and your family also have a very good Thanksgiving!!!
You too, thanks for watching!
To bad we all couldnt afford a dry ice blaster. It would save on all this stuff. You can clean your saws and atv's. Detail your car. Strip you furnature, old paint in or out of your house.
I have never heard of this? Are you trolling me? Tell me more.
Seen someone using a heat gun on 4 wheeler plastics before.
I’ve tried this too, and I noticed that the plastic on chainsaws tends to darken when heated, unlike the plastic on 4-wheeler fenders. Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate you.
Is it critical to have the piston at tdc for the vacuum/pressure test?
Yes, having the piston at TDC is important for pressure and vacuum tests. It seals the ports completely, prevents leaks, protects the seals, and keeps things stable for accurate results. Thanks for watching and commenting.
yes please make a video without special tools
You stole that saw.......
Guy didn't want it. Over the years I've accumulated dozens, maybe over a hundred saws that people never picked up after diagnosis. Thanks for watching and commenting.
maybe I have watched this amazing details for the lifetime...👍
outstanding video editing, really dude, showing what needs to be L👀KED at.
Thanks so much! I’m glad the editing helped highlight the important parts-Nacho, my producer, does all the editing, and he’s really getting good at it! Thanks for watching and commenting.
I bought a sonic cleaner to clean part from my teardowns....works like a a treat!
Sonic cleaners are awesome. Way better than the old days of using harsh and dangerous chemicals like chemdip. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I got one of these at a garage sale for five bucks a couple years ago, finally got it running. Ran perfect for about 5 minutes and then developed a rod knock. I ran 32:1 fuel in it like the rest of my saws.
Sorry to hear that. Tear it down and see what the problem is? Thanks for watching and commenting.
The only part that irritated me about this entry level saw it's they made was the crankcase is plastic and model aluminum or magnesium which would have really made the saw dexterity and longevity was the downfall
I got a ms310 from my dad and it's been awhile for use not a lot of torque just under 60 cc but it runs extremely fast RPMs can't deny the saws worth at least $400 in good condition.
I understand the importance of cleaning up the chainsaw, but: you have disassembled the whole thing to reach the dirt, which is practically impossible to do by a normal owner (not a technician).
Hey Pablo! Thanks for the comment. This is an extreme case. If you do a quick clean after each use this level of disassembly is usually not required. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” - Quote by Benjamin Franklin Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank You
Thanks for watching!
Another good tip is every time you finish using your saw take the bar and chain off and clean the bar grooves with the pack of a hacksaw blade to remove any dirt and oil. This will make your bar and chain last longer. Also brush your chain off or soak it in vinegar to temple all the dirt out of that.
I could take it apart but I'd never get it back together again! Lol
Sure you could. Just take your time and stay organized and it's not hard. Thanks for watching.
I've had mine for 5 years, best investment I've made for cutting timber.
Thank you!!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
I would hope the saw was still good if it had factory plug still in it
Wow. Good work. Stihls are worth saving, and you brought that one back nicely.
I have a nice 2000, pretty much the same as this one. It runs like a top but not oiling. Looks like the problem is the bolt behind the sprocket, duck bill must be shot, air moves both ways. What the trick to replace the duck bill since the parts no longer available? Thx
Never had much luck with Stihl’s. In my opinion they are grossly overpriced. Prefer Echo’s myself for the money.
I never mess with the old carb I replace it with a new one and I'm ready to cut. Save time, money and all that screwing with the carb. I Do like your videos.👍
When I look up the price of a new Stihl or Husqvarna carburetor it's obviously designed so that it's much smarter to throw the saw away. And the cheap reproduction ones are only effective maybe 3/4 of the time who knows how long they'll last. The smartest thing to do is to spend eight bucks on a kit this works nearly all the time and you have OEM quality at less than knock off price.
Beautiful ...
I bought a universal speed feed for my stihl fs361. Unfortunately the speed feed was not able to fit on the stihl
Wow! A FS361 is a beast! That is a different animal entirely. I don't think there is a non- STIHL Speedfeed head for this unit. But I could be wrong. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Absolutely brilliant job. I wish I had your skill
Thank you so much 😀
I would like to see it this would be my 1st chance to find out why thanos
I don't know what's happening right now.
Who is willing to pay for this service?
This was not charged to anyone. It would be way too much to charge for this level of service as you could purchase a new saw for not too much more. However, this is no different than restoring an old car or motorcycle. It may not make sense financially but if a person wants to do it why not? Maybe someone can learn how to do something similar to this by watching my videos. Anyways, thanks for watching and commenting.
Can you work on my 290 👍
What type of lubricant do you recommend for slipping on the rubber tubing, gaskets, etc? Silicone?
I noticed the starter was missing a dog tooth at 18:10, the part that extends out to grab the flywheel when you pull the rope. Was it missing or does it only have one? LOL, maybe I should watch to the end... Well, looks like only one at 35:43.
Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting! The MS 290 only has one starter pawl. I know it seems weird but that's how STIHL made it. Thanks again.
Excellent presentation, but please use plastic tools when scraping off dirt and oiled sawdust. Top Job.
I appreciate the feedback! I will consider that for the next video! Thanks for watching!
My wife has a MS290 and its been a great saw. Just used it to dropped a dead 36" elm tree. Nothing like going out to the shop and working on a piece of equipment. When I finish with her HS81R I may tackle the MS290. Its been in service for over 10 years so it needs some TLC. Your video is really going to help. Thank you. No one in my area stocks Stihl and parts so I have been buying from UK with excellent success. They pretty much repair everything in the UK and the laws are much more favorable to DIY and I believe the prices are better. Keep up the good work. You probably get more out of the teaching than your elderly students! Thank you!
I appreciate you watching and thanks for the kind words! I am working on mutiple videos right now. I hope you stick around to see them. Have a great day.
