  • Today on the lathe I'm turning a piece of Rock Elm which was downed after a wind storm back in December of 2021. This is my first attempt at turning a true Live Edge Bowl on the lathe. This one I decided to even leave the moss and other natural growths on the bark and everything to display the true beauty of the bark. This piece was turned using mainly carbide turning tools on my Laguna Revo 18-36. The finish used inside and out is a food safe finish that can be found at the link below.

    Absolutely beautiful bowl Chase! 😃

gorgeous! I just prepped a bunch of bowl blanks for this very purpose. For the live edge, was it difficult to get the finish inside the "bark" without ripping up your cloth/applicator/whatever you used?

Thanks and thank you for watching! The finish on the bark itself is the same as on the bowl inside and out, I just warmed it up a bit and brushed on by hand to protect the bark and give it a nice luster.

Very nice Chase. Great to see you kept the bark...and all your fingers. I've had 2 attempts at winged bowls.... both failures!! Hey ho, never give up!

Thanks Bryan! As craftsman we win some and we lose some... just remember there is no fail only a First Attempt In Learning (fail) As for fingers you'll notice throughout the video there is a piece of painters tape on my toolrest marking edge of the wings to keep my extra aware of their location at all times so no oopsies happen 😉

Great job Chase - you have a lot of skill for this to be your first live edge. The contrast is what catches the eye. I'm new also, have turned many pens, several bowls (working on a segmented bowl now), and a segmented hollow form. I'm ageing some oak now (about 4 months old) and hope to turn some live edge next spring. I'm curious - what is the best thickness for the live edge portion? On regular/segmented bowls I shoot for 1/4 to 3/8 inch thickness, but it appears that the bark needs to be a little thicker to remain connected. Is that correct?

Thanks! I couldn't honestly tell you what the best thickness is for a true Live Edge. I went a bit chunkier on this one to match the chunky nature of the bark and more put it on display visually. I've also been told that bark staying better attached depends on the time of year the tree was cut or fell. This specific tree came down in December and that bark was stuck good! Best of luck in your turning, I hope you have success when you get to your live edge!

@@WegeWoodWorks Thanks - your explanation makes a lot of sense - the chunkier look for the large bark. Good planning and execution on your part.
