Task 1 - NZ Hang Gliding Nationals 2023
A 60km task was set for the first task. The weather wasn’t the best with low cloud base and lots of shade but we gave it a good shot. Lots of gliders down in the Tutaki and no one in goal.

The last week we had a little bit of a hang gliding league/competition and this was task two of two as the weather didn’t play ball for any more. We originally had a plan to fly a 80km task to the south and back but due to the low cloud and late day we ended up changing the task for a shorter route over towards Omarama. My first day off the tandems in a while lined up nicely with the weather so I could to a 90km out and return with Wolfi. We headed up to the Niederhorn ramp with a hand full of flight plans. Once we got up in to the air though we made it up as we went along. @wolfiflycom

With my Swiss tandem hang gliding exam coming up in a couple of weeks I needed to practice the ‘fly on the wall’ landing technique. After trying a few I can say it’s a brilliant tool to have under your belt! It’s definitely a little intimidating for the first couple but after that they become really fun. If you are flying around mountains and valleys I would highly recommend you to give it a go...

I made it over to Interlaken in Switzerland and with in 24 hours I managed to get around 80km of sightseeing in. I have very little knowledge of the area so the guided tour from Peter at Bumblebee Hang gliding was warmly welcomed. The flight was relatively easy with wide spread lift despite little sun getting through. I’m looking forward to seeing some more of these peaks over the next few week...

My biggest fear is hitting a turbulent air parcel just before the flare. How would you handle if it happens?
Always try your best to keep the wings level. Sometimes you have to use the flare energy to put in a correction so you are level. In that case though you have to be ready to run hard! But prevention is better than cure, land as far down wind as possible from any obstacles for the cleaner air flow, you will avoid the turbulence then. And finally, don’t be scared of it, everyone drops a glider and bends something at some point, your reactions will be better if you are not scared 😉
@@petehelliwell Yesterday, after 94km of flight I've approached pretty stable until the flare moment and something rotated my wing 30 degrees on yaw axis tried to correct and flare at the same time and that was my first broken upright in ten years 😄 I watched my landing video many times and I think I didn't have a chance 🤔 I'll share it soon.

I'm sorry but it makes no sense to post a video that is fast-forwarded for the entirety of it. You don't have to show everything. Just record it at normal speed and entertain your viewers.

Not a lot to work with in terms of cloudbase. Looks quite buoyant in between thermals, though... Beautiful scenery. When was this ?
Do you need zero wind to do this kind of landings? What is needed to consider before doing it? I'm planning to learn and try it soon.
Zero wind is ok but not necessary. You can do it with tail wind too (and that will help you to take off again). The steeper the slope, more tail wind can be tolerated, the shallower the slope the less tail wind can be tolerated. When you first start trying them flying at speed is your friend but don’t sacrifice handling and control of the glider while changing in to the upright position for every bit of speed possible - smooth but quick is better than lots more speed and a wobbly approach. It’s not necessary but it would be interesting to wear a heart rate monitor for your first few 🤪🤙🏽

Why are you pulling the string?
Hi just curious to know know what altitude meters or feets you maintain when you cross country for a safe glide slope ( to avoid tree 🌲 mountains) and what average speed??? How much time taken to complete?? Thanks My place only 4000 feet altitude allowed because of military so I have to keep landing sites options all along the cross country journey. WW Falcon 4 195. I am also attaching an DIY ehelp electric harness so get me to thermal or get me home option in case of emergency.

Thank you I'm an old hang glider pilot from the 70s and I'm getting back into after 40 years of home built and GA aircraft so that string had me questing what it was doing but I kind a guessed it had to be moving the cross bar. I see the effect of it now thank you. I am going to get some lessons here in Florida but this is all flat here so it will be a tow up launch most likely out of Wallaby. So I hope to progress bake to where I once was we had ratting system back then and I was almost a hang 5 when I started flying ultralights in the 80s with my new wife.
Wicked skills! I end up on my belly too often doing uphills.

Do you circle in certain areas to gain altitude on wind currents??
Yes, when we enter a thermal which is a column of warm air that is rising, we make circles in the thermal core and gain altitude. They are invisible but if you could see them they would look similar to a tornado (but not nearly as violent, lol). They twisting air column is narrow when close to ground but it becomes broader as it gets higher and is clear of terrain.
@@SteelDoesMyWill I see them more like a water fountain, or the smoke after a nuclear blast. Goes up in a column and at the top spreads and even goes down outside
Can I ask a question? To get to that height are you dropped from a plane or jump a very tall mountain?
Launch from a mountain, it doesn't have to be a tall one. What we need is thermal lift, so on days of ideal weather conditions we can climb up to cloud base like Pete is doing here. We are never 'dropped' from planes (very dangerous), but we have method of launching called aero-tow that is similar to the way sail-planes are launched. For Hang Glider pilots who don't have a mountain launch available we can be towed up by an ultralight aircraft.
