Hang Gliding 100km Through the Swiss Mountains

  • I made it over to Interlaken in Switzerland and with in 24 hours I managed to get around 80km of sightseeing in. I have very little knowledge of the area so the guided tour from Peter at Bumblebee Hang gliding was warmly welcomed. The flight was relatively easy with wide spread lift despite little sun getting through. I’m looking forward to seeing some more of these peaks over the next few weeks. Hopefully I can bring you a few more videos over the summer.
    Thanks loads to Bumblebee Tandem Hang Gliding for getting me up the hill and Peter for showing me around. If you’re in the area and want to have a go at hang gliding hit me up or hit Bumblebee up

    Probably the best hang gliding soaring video. Thanks for showing people how beautiful hang gliding can be.

    Nice flight in an epic scenery... I am a bit scared of flying next to this big lakes with less landing places, but if the air is so active - looks like a nice day - well spent!

    Beautiful flight for such a cloudy day, it'd be so hard to do that with a paraglider. It almost makes me regret flying paragliders instead of hanggliding 😄 except I forgot I'm at work with a small bag waiting for me to be done 🪂🪂

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No regrets needed, they both have their own perks. Sure i enjoy flying hang gliders more but my paraglider is much more convenient. If you can learn to fly both I’d highly recommend it 🙂

    This was brilliant. Except for that one time where it hit choppy most of the time the air mass seemed pretty smooth. I flew the tail end of a front 2 days ago and boy was it nasty. It had some residual effect that even yesterday it was causing all sorts of lifted wing and kick outs.

    Great flight, thanks for sharing. Which 360 camera do you use and how do you get your voice so bright without wind noice ?

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers, it was a pretty cool flight, totally unexpected. I’m using the Insta360 one x2 and a Rode Lavalier GO external mic

    • @sanderdelta
      @sanderdelta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@petehelliwell That microphone is a professional one. Where do you have it mounted, right next to the insta360 or at the downtube or ... ?

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sanderdelta It is a good one yes, definitely worth the money. I have it on my tshirt underneath my flying top. The extension wire for it to reach the camera is permanently routed up the down tube (or is should that be down the upright?)

    • @sanderdelta
      @sanderdelta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@petehelliwell Is it al wire? not wireless? since Rode also got very good wireless equipment.
      What is the route of the wire, through the upright to the top and then through the hangloop down?

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sanderdelta yes that’s the route exactly. With a few connectors in between so it’s easy to take the harness off etc. I did think about going wireless but I was put off by the split second delay in the audio, Bluetooth connectivity issues and the extra items to charge

    beautiful views, why speed up?

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your right, the views are stunning. The speed up (or hyper lapse) gives a better idea of the distance, direction and what is actually happening . A bit like a time lapse of the clouds or the stars, you could watch it for an hour and barely see it change or reduce the hour to a few seconds and see exactly what happened 🙂. If i edited the video without the hyper lapse it would of been about four hours long with lots of boring bits in it.

  • @carlosleon7683
    @carlosleon7683 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Epic flight, mate. Well done!
    When flying along the ridge I noticed that you were not so close but rather 50-100m away from it. Isn't the lift normally coming off the tips of the mountains?
    Thanks!

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the lift a bit closer in could probably be a bit stronger but probably not as smooth. Also remember that these are big mountains and the whole airmass along their face is going up due to the heat and instability. And although there is a big ridge along the side there is still a lot of following the clouds and sometimes those clouds are further out in front. It is different to ridge soaring on smaller hills when the rising air is ‘mechanical’ lift caused by the prevailing wind.

  • @Logical855
    @Logical855 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I saw a lot of rotation(360) in one spot when you were gliding?
    Were u doing that on purpose or was a wind or something?

    • @mathematicromancio
      @mathematicromancio ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's done on purpose in thermal area (where air rises due to heat) to gain height. It's used by birds as well to gain height with less effort possible (reason why they do thousands of miles flying pretty easily).

    Did u have any problems with your glider on the commercial plane or did u have to extra airmail it by special cargo? I usually end up having endless discussions with the airlines about oversize cargo. Last trip to Pakistan was a logistical nightmare regarding the glider.

    • @petehelliwell
      @petehelliwell  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never put a hang glider on the plane. It’s more favourable to own gliders in different countries when ever possible. Yes it’s more expensive until you have a glider written off by the airline and then you are buying another glider anyway..
