Civic Type R FL5 Redemption
Getting back ON THE HORSE! First time out to the track with Tidewater Sports Car Club with my new Type R, which I usually refer to as "R2". I know it's a bit of a long video, but there are a lot of important topics covered, so watch when you can!
I was glad to get back out there! Lot's more to learn and share, and improve upon!
I'm super stoked for the build that I have planned for this car!

    Is this stock or aftermarket downpipes? In the future I will want to add those on and dont want the exhaust to be good before and then have tons of drone after getting some dp's. Is it liveable with the windows down? I love driving with the windows down and I like like decently loud but also like to enjoy having the windows open. Also are the burbles from a tune, or does it do that stock?

    • @pointbypatrol
      @pointbypatrol 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This video was on an stock downpipe, and no you won't hear much with the windows down because of wind buffeting. I was on a stock tune for this video as well. I did put on a downpipe later on, and it didn't contribute to any kind of annoying drone, but you'd get more rasp at higher rpms when you were heavy into the throttle.

    • @DampedCoast
      @DampedCoast 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @pointbypatrol Thanks for the reply, I just like to figure out as much as I can before I spend that much money lol. Where they catless or with high flow cats? I had a 3rd gen Acura Tl before the Fl5 and I took out 2 of the 3 cats, bigger j pipe, and a magnaflow catback and it sounded amazing but was just too much drone so I did sound dampening throughout the whole car and then still needed to add a small resonator to make it liveable with the windows up and down. Although the car sounded amazing and defined/clear I'd like to avoid doing all that effort again especially on a new car. Not to mention all that work and labor for the exhaust was still cheaper than most Fl5 exhausts lol

    • @pointbypatrol
      @pointbypatrol 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DampedCoast I had the TSP catted downpipe. It will also get a little louder with a tune, but only at high RPM, which means you're in control of how aggressive the exhaust sounds with your right foot. It sounds fantastic wide open! Raspy and aggressive, but the second you start driving normally again it's back to behaving itself. I LOVE this exhaust!

    • @DampedCoast
      @DampedCoast 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @pointbypatrol I am most likely going to wait on the dp and tune until my warranty is over since it's my daily, but after that it's go time. Thanks for the quick replies, and sounds like that setup would be a lot of fun and maybe similar to my TL. That thing was ok up to like 3 or 4k and then anything past that up was when he'll broke loose, but it was a lot of fun. That being said that was an auto and this being my first manual I assume it's a lot better with an exhaust setup since you can completely control your gear and rims. Thanks a lot for the info and I hope everything goes alright!

    I'm one of the new people who saw your crash video, and I just want to say a couple of things: First and foremost is holy crap!! I'm so glad that you're ok! That's some scary stuff. Second thing is a bit more critical of what happened... I didn't want to comment on your crash vid as that was not an appropriate time to do so, you had other crap to deal with. I do need to tell you this for your own safety and others on track with you. You mentioned having an instructor in the vehicle, but I would like to hear more about what feedback they had for you. I'm not an instructor but have attended many HPDE events and have had an instructor in my vehicle with me 95% of the time. My main observation is your hands. PLEASE work on your hand placement on the steering wheel. Your hands are a very major part of your feedback mechanism when it comes to determining your tires level grip on the track surface. If you are constantly shuffling around the wheel, you are not in sync with the wheel, steering column, steering rack, and ultimately the tires grip on the track surface. Always have your hands @ 9 and 3 unless you lose grip and need to counter steer. Use a light grip, no white knuckles, wiggle the fingers on stable straight aways to loosen up a bit, but always keep them at 9 and 3. If that makes you feel a bit confined during hairpin/tight turns, then you can adjust your column up/away to make a little more room for your elbows. Proper seating position is important. I really hope that this comes across as constructive criticism and not flaming as that is not my intent at all. Keep driving! Keep learning! Keep having fun!! That's what it's all about. EDIT: I notice that your lap starting around the 15 min mark looks much better than the previous vids I have watch when it comes to your hands. But you start to get lazy with that left hand at 16:02. Keep that hand locked in at 9:00. It was looking much better though! Keep at it.

So glad your well and pushing yourself to get back on the horse, there are no limits when your passionate about something! Loved hearing the shoutout to Tony in his GTI, great super smart guy! I want to get out there at a Tidewater event, between your experience and things Tony has mentioned, it certainly sounds chill! This is what HPDE is all about! Have fun! Work up to the pace, test the limits while your still in control, and just have as much fun as you can!! Just got back from Hyperfest running with NASA HPDE 2 and 3 groups (5th year at HF!), its been literal years tracking my civic a few HPDE events per year, but this outting I had more fun this time than I have had my entire HPDE career so far. I'm getting more and more comfortable trusting this wild contraption I've spent almost a decade building hahaha. @@pointbypatrol listen man, you are being honest and explaining things. Not all of us are massive TH-camrs sponsored by “________”. I Love the FL5 CTR and it fits my needs perfectly, but living way out in the middle of nowhere has its drawbacks. It’s good to get true tested info, and I appreciate you for that. P.S I live in middle America, in a town where there are no actual car people, sure there are folks who buy toys, but they never drive them. So keep it up man, it’s nice to see others going through trials and tribulations and overcoming them!

    Was great seeing you out there and getting back into the swing of things! First time back after a crash is very unnerving. Glad you were able to keep your head clear, and happy you learned a bit from the ride along! Very nice lap overall - especially Hogpen! That was one of my areas of focus this weekend and your advice there helped a bunch. I just need to get better consistency there. Hope to see you out there again in December!

    I think we get so focused on times that we forget to actually have fun. its good to get PRs but. not at the expense of having fun and have a good day out on track. Glad you back there, that takes some guts. You are right about the PS4S, they are junk on track, great street tires. I had to run them at the track a few weeks ago because had an issue with the track wheels they squirm, take long to heat up and grip and then overhead and go slick quick. I also have R5s (only on front ) but been having tons of issues with judering its driving me crazy.

      The R5's seem to have a tendency to smear. I don't remember the R7's having that same issue. With decent tires R7's would be a good choice!

      Yeah I think either I did not bed them properly or something but had really bad juddering last track day, kind of ruined the say. Trying to drive with them daily to see if I can get rid of the deposits. But also thinking of going to ferodo 1.11s which is what I had on my m2 and were excellent (also way quieter, the r5s squeal like crazy all the time, the ferrodos only really did it when at the end of stopping)

    Good on you for getting back on the horse and not hiding from your mistakes. Sad people would ridicule but I think a lot of people can learn from what you are sharing. I tracked my FK8 in the past without track insurance and if I ever take my FL5 to the track I’ll definitely be getting insurance!
