When the VRod was introduced in 2002, my riding buddies hated it. “…it ain’t no Harley” they would say, and they would go on the gripe that HD never asked them, the core customer, for their input. I retorted if HD did ask us for input, this is what we would come up with as I pointed to a Heritage Softail. The point being, the core HD customer doesn’t want any deviation from its lineup of bikes. Witness the PanAmerica. By all accounts, the PA is a solid bike meant for a different customer and riding genre. But if those adventurer bike customers perceive hostility at the dealer, their dollars will go elsewhere, like to BMW

I think it's funny how people always speak about 'needing' (when it's actually wanting) more power. These bikes - even the 107 - has loads of power. People want the larger engine for bragging rights. Most people will never use those engines to their full potential. A 107ci is approx 1753cc. That's a larger displacement then most cars are putting out. A lot of cars are 1.4L (I'm aware they'll be a turbo). Nobody needs this kind of power in a bike - people just want it. And yes - I'm one of those people too - but the point is a 107ci is actually still a crazy sizeable engine. Also - once you crack the cases - you’re just asking for problems.

Actually the engine shouldnt use anymore fuel, as it's still the same displacement. The fuel economy difference is when you try to use the extra power, that's where it uses more fuel. An expertly handled tune should get great gas mileage. On my Torque cam I could get up to 52mpg, over 220miles a tank, because it was really well tuned. It was better fuel economy than stock.

  • @marathon8649

never had a warranty to worry about. newest thing i ever had was a new '91 evo engine from harley that i built a bike around. most guys i new who cammed up their bikes were throttle heavy guys, so the more power someone like that has in a stock engine, the less reliable the engine is. i wouldn't mess with aftermarket on a warrantied bike because even if something unrelated to the mod goes wrong the warranty is still void. i'd wait till the warranty expires. (and then avoid getting throttle happy when there's more power.)

    • @mickeygaines007

Other question is gear drive or chain. Which unless you want to spend a lot of money welding or upgrading your crank, the answer is chain because the runout will be too much for gear. Has to be next to no runout for gear. And I think the reason many of the ones that have issues do is because the rider thinks it’s a license to just hammer on the thing all the time. It’s still mechanical stuff that will have issues if abused.

I did a cam/exhaust upgrade on my 2018 Street Glide using aftermarket parts - S&S 465 cam, adjustable pushrods and lifter cuffs. Also the S&S 2:1 exhaust system. As well I had the latest Harley oil pump installed for peace of mind. I lost a full year of power train warranty by doing this, but I wasn't about to settle for the lower gains of the Harley parts. It took a couple of tries for them to get the dyno tune right, but once they did the bike had noticeably more power and ran cooler as well. By the way dyno tuning ran about $450; this was in Edmonton five years ago.

    • @mickeygaines007
      @mickeygaines007 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

I've run 2 Stage 2 Cams. SE8-447(Harley's Torque cam) and the Wood 22XE Cam. I HIGHLY recommend swapping cams. So long as you do your research and work with FuelMoto USA. Having 110hp+ rear wheel on a Fat Boy 114 is a BLAST. The SE Torque cam is worth it as long as you get it tuned right, but the aftermarket bolt in cams are better. 22Xe is the one I went with stats wise and it's a haul ass cam. I have a video of me doing zero to 60 with a loaded bike in 3.8 seconds. A bolt in stage 2 cam is the best bang for the buck upgrade for your bike and I think it's probably the best place to stop in terms of longevity and reliability. Just dont do the mistake of going for the old 475C cam. There's better cams now. If you're interested in some more details about what I did for my stage 2 stuff, you're more than welcome to add me on Discord or some place we both can connect and I can share what Info and where I got my PDF service manuals. I think the 2 best upgrades you can put on a fat boy 114 is a stage 2 cam, and a 260 rear tire.

I put a Zippers 468 cam in my 2021 Roadking Special...lots more power...sounds like a Harley should rather than the smooth stock idle. Realistically I don't need the extra power. You lose a bit of low speed rideability as the bike bucks and jerks at low speeds because of the lumpy low RPMs and idle. Probably wouldn't bother doing it again. Low speed maneuvering need to feather the clutch in and out to control the bucking and jerking.

I just got a so called new old 2023 fat bob brand new from harley . Love my sex machine and yeah they need to show the fat bob some love and have a out law edition with a 121 or a option to order it with 131 without all the stupid g0verned features ..? A bike that does 96 mph in 3rd gear but won’t go over 119 just saying

Came here not from the wear issue, but was hoping to see what aftermarket tires folks are putting on there Fat Boys. I have a 2016 with 2,500 miles on the original tires. It's now Novemer 2024. I'm thinking about replacing them due to their age. A couple of times while turn a corner on dry pavement I thought I felt the rear tire slip a bit and i wasn't being aggressive on the throttle. I haven't ridden it in the rain nor would it want to. I don't have any confidence in these tires at all. Any suggestions on tire brand/style?

Seems like folks go with tires like the metzler cruisetecs, Dunlop American Elites or Michelin Commanders.

No matter which ones I defiantly hope the Softail line gets some love with this performance bagger craze taking up everyone’s time. The fat Bob had a unique look that I think appeals to some. Fat boy also. I think they will get rid of the remaining Rushmore bikes, the ultra and rg limited, and what we will get is a choice of different packages for the new style rg and sg. If you want you’ll be able to get a touring pack and lower fairing for it shipped to the dealer that way for you, etc. I am bummed because you featured my road king special a while back and I think that’s a model we won’t see again, and maybe not a road king at all. I am 50/50 that they may have a road king with the new style bags. Let me know if you hear anything about what’s happening with the road king. But that’s my prediction. Indian is killing HD in the smaller cruiser area so they need to totally re-do the sporty. The motor and performance is awesome but I hate the look!

Let’s hope it’s the year of the Softail because as you said, they need some love. The Roadking deserves more as well.

@ yeah for sure, the 30th anniversary was this year and it came and went without a peep from HD. Great option for those like me who want the touring chassis but don’t want to be married to a fairing.

I would say it’s a typo, my local HD had a tribute write up about the terminator movie and in the article they referred to the Fatboy as a fatbob. A common error, but it’s a great looking model, but personally I think they should make styling changes to the exhaust, not swept-up and colourful but more traditional layout

Great video as always. I am a late convert to Harley, I rode sport bikes for eons. Most of my riding friends still ride sport bikes. This is why I always gripe about Harley Davidson lean angles. Their bikes have come a long way in recent years and I know that they can handle sport riding if they would just design them to lean over another 10 degrees. I am stoked to hear that the FatBob is a possibility for 2025; it had one of the best lean angles in the HD family and a cartridge inverted fork. My dream would be a FatBob with mid-controls and a 117 - that would spank!

Be nice if they put a 5 gallon tank on the Streetbob and Fatbob...the 3.5 gallon that was on the Breakout for a few years was a bust in my opinion. I put a 5 gallon Fatboy tank on my Streetbob...the way it should have come from the factory in my opinion.

They put the smaller tanks on some of them to allow the motor to be featured more and stream line it a bit. Those aren’t generally bikes that you see out there eating a lot of miles on multi day trips. My ass isn’t as good as it used to be so I have to get off way before my 6 gallon on my road king needs it anyway. I don’t disagree with you, just explaining why the smaller tanks on some.

My introduction to Harley was a Fat Bob I bought new in 2012. I hope you're right about a new one coming out in '25, but history tells us Harley doesn't put much effort into keeping models alive that don't sell well (witness what happened with the standard Road King).
