Great video! I’m a first-time supervisor myself. I just moved out of teaching and back to retail. I spent most of my professional life in teaching, so this transition has been quite difficult, and I have come to find that managing adults is different than managing kiddos. (Quelle surprise!) Thanks for that statistic at the beginning, it surprised me and helped me validate what I’m going through. I’ll watch this video on the way to work to help me feel more confident. I know I can do this supervising job, but I am transitioning from peer to supervisor this week and I have gotten some pushback already from my fellow employees. Nothing too serious but I was really caught off guard by it: the two employees just stood around chatting for over 30 minutes! They definitely wouldn’t have done that if any of the other supervisors had been there Lol 😆 Yes, the store was empty, but there’s still loads to do. My teacher self wanted to go over and give them a friendly reminder that there was still work to do, but I felt so insecure I just let them keep talking. I’m supervising the bookstore again today so I wanted to bring my A-game and not let this happen again. But on the other hand, I don’t want to be too strict, you know? 😅

Whew! You have a lot going on but it sounds like you are ready for the challenge. As mentioned, peer to supervisor is one of those transitions that is challenging. But always remember, your boss promoted you for a reason. If you show your employees respect, explain your expectations, and do your job, you should ease whatever fears they have. You’ve got this! Let me know how it goes.

You are correct in there being differences between a supervisor and a leader. You are also correct in saying this video deals more with a supervisor. That was the intent. Many people struggle with the challenge of going from a peer to a supervisor. Once we get them through that challenge, then we can start figuring out how to become a leader.

The transition from a shop floor worker and going into a superior role over your colleagues is one if the toughest things. Staff challenge you. Staff tend to think you have every answer and judge your decisions. Staff may loose respect for you at first and won’t listen and it’s a long road to gain their respect. Personally, be honest with them, be stern with them and remember you’re not gonna be liked all the time. ‘It’s lonely at the top’ is very true.

First time supervisor. Prior active Navy flightdeck E4 working class supervisor. Currently an E-5 in the Reserves. Havent recieved any extra leadership roles there yet. I just became a supervisor in the Civilian sector. assistant supervisor/manager role. managing several locations. I have to deliver many things to my boss each week. Microsoft Onedrive is my current challenge, Supply to my custodial teams is strongly related to budget. I have had many Civilian jobs and Supervisors but I guarantee that I have more challenges than any if them had. They all work in one location. Employee retention rate was low for those conoanies too, I work for a non-profit, so losing anyone even for a day impacts everyone. I honestly feel like if supply and inventory were almost unlimited like the navy, my job would be easier. Maybe if supplies were kept at the office's building instead of one of my locations, I could manage and disperse the inventory more appropriately.

I do make mistakes, I am human, this is normal. BUT! I am surrounded by people making same mistakes over and over again costing a lot of money to the business. I am not a manager, it is just bizarre to see how everyone gets away scot-free because the company is too big to look into those issues, investigate root causes and talk to employees to make sure it won't happen again. Today I confronted one of those employees publicly, after three years of useless attempts to point out that mistakes privity. I know that person was super pissеd on me but I just could not tolerate this any longer. Of course, it was as polite as possible, tried not to blame the person directly, but she was so defensive - because she would never acknowledge a mistake, blaming everyone around her, and trying to convince me that the system is so complicated, badly designed and so on...

Ugh. It sounds like a bad culture at your work. I've had a job where I worked and dealt with the same issues. Unfortunately, if the leaders of the company don't care, it is hard to change a culture. The best thing to do is A) make sure you do your work as well as possible and B) make sure your employees that report to you do their work. If an employee continues to make mistakes, see what you can do to provide coaching. Possibly pair them up with a more experienced co-worker. Provide additional training. Good luck!

Yes, transitioning from a co-worker to a supervisor can be challenging. The best thing you can do is let them know you have their back and that you will support them. Make sure the work is getting done. Meet with them as a group and one-on-one and ask them what their concerns are and how you can address them. Once they realize you are indeed their supervisor, it will be easier.

I recently was successful in an interview and they offered me the Production Supervisor role. I have been in the manufacturing industry for 5 years starting as a Machinist. I have worked my way up to Production Lead Hand and I recently secured a Supervisor position with a big company. Now I have a few questions and queries on how my body language and choice of words should be. I was wondering if you could help me with some of my questions. Your time would be helpful. Thank you

    You shouldn't supervise your friends.

I agree it can be very tricky. Some people don’t see any issues but there is so much that can go wrong. I always advise people that if they have a choice, not to do it.
