    A topic you could also speak on is "Short staffed" and when employees are aware of that issue. They think they are untouchable and have their own set of rules. It is very hard to hold employees accountable when you are also short manpower.

      Absolutely right. Short staffed is a problem for most of us and even some of the management are contributing to the problem you mentioned.there willing to keep bad employees because they think it's too hard to find a replacement

    I'm a new supervisor at a new job. I am having trouble with employees taking 15 min and 30 min breaks on time also at there schedule break time. I'm constantly getting push back when it comes to this.

      LaTia, thank you for your comment. When it comes to a new supervisor, I sometimes compare the situation to a substitute teacher. I'm sure you had one growing up. When the substitute teacher came into the classroom. the kids would try to see what they could get away with. The same thing is happening to you as a new supervisor. Your employees are trying to see what they can get away with. The best thing you can do is to talk with each of them and let them know what the expectation is regarding the amount of times for a break. Let them know what you (and the company) expect, and let them know what the consequences will be if they are taking longer. You might want to also let them know that it is company policy, not your policy, but you are required to ensure company policy is maintained. The important thing for you to do then is to follow up. If an employee takes longer than they are supposed to, then they should suffer the consequences, whatever they may be. If you don't enforce the policy, they will continue to stretch those breaks even longer.
      Good luck and let me know how it goes!

    This video is great. The more times I watch it the more really key points I pick up! It totally reinforces key elements of our Manager Development efforts, and our leaders respond extremely favorably to the short, concise time slots...which are packed with huge amounts of critical information. Thank you!

    Hi Michael
    I've got my first time a Security Supervisor job with the new company.
    After 3 days training I have been working for 4 days and faced with a problem.
    I have a team of 3 officers who work with me in a 4 days 4 nights pattern. Also there are two officers who join my team only on days as their working pattern is Monday to Friday only days. Those two are the most experienced officers and trying to manage me because my manager is always supporting them rather than me.
    I don't know how to act, this situation leads to a conflict between me and my manager.
    Could you give me advice please?
    Many thanks in advance.

      This situation is not uncommon. Sometimes a new supervisor has members on their team who have a good relationship with their boss, which can lead to uncertainty and possible conflict.
      It's tough, but you must speak with your boss. It has to be done professionally. You can start the conversation and let the boss know you have issues with these two employees and give examples of them trying to manage you. Ask the boss, "why do you think that is?" Hopefully, the boss will pick up on the issue and what they are doing. If the boss doesn't realize what they are doing, you can say, "The perception is they receive support from you instead of me." By using those words, you aren't blaming the boss. You aren't saying, "You are the problem." You let them know "the perception" is this. Instead of figuring out how to fix the problem, ask the boss. "Have you ever been in this situation, and if so, what did you do?"
      I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes!

    hello mr michael finley,
    how i survive as a new role of supervisor?
    currently i am a line leader they put me as oic as supervisor but not yet supervisor.
    i have some problem regarding data , graph ,..i encounthering headseache to think ... pls advise how can i perform as oic if its hard and i dont know what to do

    • @MFinley5444
      @MFinley5444 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liza, congratulations on the OIC role. They obviously see something in you.
      For the tasks that you aren't familiar with, the easiest thing to do is ask someone. It could be your boss, but I realize some do not like to do that. An alternative is to ask a senior worker, preferably a peer, who does know how. Let them know you would value their assistance in helping you. Also, see if there are any resources, either internal it external that you could use to get familiar with the work. Maybe ask the learning and development/training people if they have a job-aid to help you.
      Good luck and let me know how it goes.

    How long would it take to become a supervisor at a workplace?

    • @leadershiprollcall
      @leadershiprollcall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin, there is not a "usual" time. It all depends on the business, number of employees, etc. I would say that if you are interested, this might be a conversation you would like to have with your current supervisor. Let them know you are interested and ask them what you need to do to be considered for promotion. Let me know how it goes and good luck!
