The fact that this ending was so bad is a tragedy of modern times. AOT was one of the best shows of all time and it got ruined instantly. This is why a good ending is so important for a story. Ultimately isayama really had nothing to say in the end. The popular TH-camrs that are defending this story must be getting paid by somebody or at least they have some kind of incentive to defend it. I refuse to believe that they all believe the ending was acceptable. AOT was an amazing story and we should be happy for what we got. The ending did ruin the whole story but at least there were some arcs of the story we can look back on as peak fiction. I take some comfort in knowing that there are people out there that loved AOT but hated the ending because it means that many people aren’t willing to accept mediocre art. With the amount of lackluster media out there, it’s important for us to expect more out of it and speak out against it.

Idm the ending

One of my favourite ending of any anime or show is the "zero requiem" of Code Geass and still I'm not feeling anything during the final conclusion of AOT. It just simply feels very contrived, unearned, forceful, and inorganic.... Plot wise, character arcs wise, thematically, in all ways. It totally throws everything built so far into the bin, for the shock factor and "happy ending". Eren' character whose main drive is freedom is limited to the plot progression device through fate, predeterminism, and thus absolving his sins to fate, giving him a heroic end, inspite of what he did... And that is not even consistent with his own character. Isayama is confused whether Eren is a angry confused kid or he is an adult with so much growth and character progression through his experiences or he is just acting and superficial even when he is alone... And most disservice is done to Founder Ymir and Historia. Both these characters were foreshadowed to have parallels multiple times and then, finally it's revealed Ymir loved the king!! WTF!! The first time we see Founder Ymir's face is when Eren convinces her with his rumbling plan and her eyes at that time shows the hatred she had for the world. Then it is retconed to be her being in love with the king, when all the king did was torture her and treat her like an insect... And the very contrast of her a very loving kind person turning so hateful is in itself a great storytelling and character arc, and it is all dumped for the love angle. And the whole history, narratives, lore of the world that is related to Erwin, his father, and so many other characters is all ruined with the love story BS of Founder Ymir. And Mikasa is looped into this, instead of Historia who has always been foreshadowed to play a key role and was having many parallels with Founder Ymir. And Historia being such a strong character with great individuality who even opposed Eren's Rumbling plan when he revealed it to her, didn't even do anything later or didn't even mention about it to anyone... So strange!! And lastly, Armin was having a great character development throughout the story where he is continuously improving, and at the end there was no payoff to his role in the end game, parallelling Erwin by making any plans and Hange, Jean are the ones making plans and Armin was only relegated to the "muscle" role. Most injustice to Armin's character is that he only got so much angry at Eren being indifferent towards Mikasa but Armin was not at all aggravated when he heard that Eren killed 80% of the population or Eren himself killed his mother!?... After all the character development he had to deal with being the murderer as collosial Titan in Liberio port.. And Last but not the least, the way Isayama treated Annie's return is laughable!! No one confronted her for her betrayal and everyone surprisingly didn't have anything to say to her...! Heck, Connie told "she's been through a lot, she fought a lot, so let's not expect more from her".. when Annie denied to come with them for the final mission to stop Eren. That's ridiculous!! This is said by the same Connie who was so much upset and struggling with his emotions over losing Sasha and not able to revive his mother, etc etc.. Levi, who lost so many of his teammates in scouts due to Annie didn't even say a word!! During the last few chapters, No character was acting according to their own motivations or experiences and are acting according to what plot demands that Isayama had decided... And yet there are so many people online saying it's a "masterpiece" AOT just pulled off a "mini-GOT ending" and that's all there is to it. The conclusion of AOT is fine, but not at all "great" or it even does any justice to otherwise a great series. If it had to be a happy ending it had to be organic. So sad that this is what happened to this great story at the end. Just to end this in a position note... The only good thing about the last chapter are the scene where Levi sees the previous Survey corp members Erwin, Petra, etc and saluting them... And Connie, Jean seeing Sasha's ghost and reminiscing. Apart from that, this ending is a big mess, with great action, but a missed opportunity at the end to be one of the greats. All the themes of freedom, caged like a cattle, war, cycle of hatred are fully down the drain. And at the end, the cycle of hatred didn't even end and the very followers of Eren became the bad guys with authoritarian, racist beliefs.... The world may see the war again, and people can always find the reason to hate each other, and that's a fine note to conclude, but the very mission of Eren backfiring on itself even though that "mission" was poorly construed by isayama forcefully by breaking and ruining every good character on the show, ruining all the lore, world building history, founder Ymir with love story angle, and it all ended up becoming meaningless at the end. Erwin would be happy to be dead before knowing the truth of the world, as the truth of the world is very very disappointing from every angle and after so much buildup and hints and opposing narratives to rewrite the history by different parties, and some of the truth seekers going against it all..All that buildup, character arcs, intruige are made irrelevant and are ruined completely at the end. The least an author can do is do justice to the protagonist if not the other characters or plot or the world. Eren's entire character development throughout his life when he experienced good, bad and ugly, led to his negative character arc into the darkside... All that is down the drain as soon as Eren started behaving immature about Mikasa, acting like a kid and crying before Armin... And Armin thinking "this is the true Eren"... What a joke of a scene... Making it look like eren is just a kid, when all his actions so far were very mature.. and the character arc he had so far to become edgy and indifferent is totally negated by it by implying he was acting all along even when he is alone by himself (just to show the audience but he was still apparently acting...😂😂)... Or all the themes that Eren stands for the freedom, drive, extreme emotions for his loved ones, his integrity, everything is thrown in the bin when it's shown that what he is doing is because of predeterminism and he doesn't have much of allegiance in it all, contradicting all his previous statements (even after knowing the truth), that he will only do what will protect his friends, but he is a puppet to the time loop... And this also absolves all his sins of killing 80% of the population.... And he, a character who is so sure if all his actions doesn't even know apparently why he did what he did...!! And Yet it's all portrayed as a "grand sacrifice", he did it to protect his friends, he let his selfish reasons over the world itself, he wants to take on the hatred if the world, when it's all in the time loop and he doesn't even know why he did what he did.... At the same time he can't stop what's about to happen..... And Eren did infact killed 80% of the population ... While he can't help it as he is compelled to do it, and all his sins are absolved, he is somehow messiah-fied by the end... It's all very inconsistent. And the very reason for all his hatred is his Mother getting killed, and his drive for freedom from his childhood and it's all down the drain when the retcon "shock" factor reveal of isayama saying Eren is the one who is directly responsible for killing his mom... Eren Hating dad is also poorly handled, as there is no reason for Eren hating his dad to such an extent except that Greisha killed the royal children, which Greisha only did because Eren provoked him to do. And Eren is so angry at Greisha for the very same thing that he himself made his dad to do... Such a bad writing. And the most confusing part being... Eren Disappointed by the world, as the real outside world is different from what he and Armin saw in the picture book, which is a great theme to focus on, but then Eren also hinting he is disappointed about what people outside think and then isayama jumping the gun by making it seems like Eren is hating all the people themselves, and he genuinely wants to kill people, and showing the symbolism of kid eren doing the Titanic pose on top of the clouds feeling the freedom while below Mass murder (Rumbling) is happening.... Then Changing it to Eren didn't want it, but he had to do it for his friends, and then again changing it to he trusted his friends will come and stop him, so that hatred is focused towards himself for zero requiem. After that Eren crying like a baby saying he wants a girlfriend, just a while ago he was genuinely enjoying the massacre with a Titanic pose. It's all way too much inconsistent and it's just bad writing. The only two scenes I genuinely liked and which felt earned and organic thematically and plotwise are Levi saluting the fallen survey scouts Erwin, Hange, Pedra, etc... saying "it's over, your sacrifices are not in vain". And the other scene of Jean and Connie seeing the ghost of Sasha as the plot resolves and reminisces about her. That's it. That's the only part which fits, which is consistent, without being jarring, feeling like an a**pull instead and not something builtup and resolved. Having a happy ending is not wrong, but it has to be earned, deserved, through plot, buildup, plot wise, coming full circle with character arcs or at least thematically, but not through plot conveniences or retconing or breaking/ruining everything built-up so far. That kind of happy ending doesn't give any satisfaction.

If they ever make a 3rd and final game, this should be one of the endings you could get. Alongside the multiple endings including ending up with Mikasa, or the manga ending.(Spoilers) Anime ending was insane, sad for everyone, but Eren pulled it off and let Ymir pass on with the help of everyone including Armin and Mikasa letting go🥹 The official ending is war never stops and possible restart thanks to a random kid stumbling upon Erens old tree, where he laid as a kid, in the farthest future.

It was neck and neck for which anime was better, but this just sealed the deal. Also as usual, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood remains as the Emperor of GOAT Anime endings. That pure Titan lookin' ass Isayama wishes Attack on Titan has a better ending than Hiromu Arakawa's masterpiece.

Strongly recommend you to turn off the sound for this one unless you want to hear some douche narrating memes (dafuq) and some forced laughing.

Only two problems 1. Eren wouldn't act rational with all the information in his mind 2. I doubt it'd be easy to convince the warriors and even more difficult for convincing historia to become queen (also the fact it happened during the training arc so all the characters don't know eachother wel)

I legit thought during Mikasa love sequence she was going to wake up and it was going to be a dream or that Eren used his founding powers to change the memories of his friends or something just way more creative or logical.!

It is stupid but Eren is an idiot who only realized everything he had done once the rumbling started, I would have liked a much better ending but I will just accept it. Isayama said that he felt like an idiot who had been given too much power when it came to AOT. He had never been a successful writer and being seen as a genius is something he never felt about himself. He had said that he would hurt us with what was coming up and I think he did a great job with that.

Grisha and Dina being the two shifters would have solved so many problems in the story.
