If I ignore 139, hes the best character in the series. So S+. Post 139, probably around B. I dont like it but hes still a hell of alot more developped then most others.

Minor spoilers for Gantz: Anyone whose ever read Gantz can see why Eren has the worst possible character assassination. The MC in Gantz goes through a whole journey, developing as a character. By the end, he has done almost a complete 180 from who he started out as, but the journey to get there shows why he became who he became. It explains why each of his personality traits changed, who helped change them, and the events that caused him to rethink his outlook on everything. You can reread Gantz dozens of times and feel fulfilled each time at least in the MC's personal journey because none of his actions are invalidated, he has to actually put his life on the line to save his friends, and guess what? He actually dies! He dies in the process of saving his friends, so his friends push through their own problems to try and save him! Believe it or not he does become a simp at the end, but he ends up with his love interest, who had an entire ARC to explain why he developed romantic feelings for her despite initially being annoyed by her! Some of his enemies end up supporting him in the final battle but didnt have their character retconned to become good guys, theyre still bad guys!
Dont get me wrong, Gantz ending is very rushed and not as good as the previous chapters, but does it invalidate the entire journey of the MC? No! It doesnt explain everything and the biggest mystery has an unsatisfying payoff but the characters are not assassinated and Gantz is ultimately about the characters. If you liked what AoT was building up to be, just read Gantz honestly.
Im now realizing we live in a world where Gantz isnt seen as edgy garbage. Im vindicated.

I hated gabi for killing sasha, but after the last chapter I have to admit she was really one of the few consistent characters, if only she could save us from this trash ending by killing eren the clown.

@Maddening Hustle69 Yams himself said in an interview, some days ago, that Armin didn't agree with Eren's plan and knew he has to be stopped, but Armin understood the advantages of the Rumbling (titans disappearing, no more Marley, Paradis in peace for some years and long lives for him and his friends) and thanked his friend privately to let Eren understand that his true intentions are clear now. He no longer considers Eren as a cold killer but a man who did the WRONG thing to save his friends and people. Google it by yourself. 4:07 I've only watched season 1 and read up to chapter 46 and this is how I feel about Mikasa while everyone else was gushing over how strong she is, as a woman, and the abs. Her character is non-existent if it's not about Eren, and that's annoying. It's unfortunate to hear that it's still the same at the end of the series.
Ya, I didn't realize until Season 4 about how very little development Mikasa actually has. We love her at first because she's good fighter, looking out for Eren no matter what. But that drags and drags, until she's just in his shadow, even at the end.

Man, I remember in Code Geass when Lelouch broke down before Zero Requiem about how much he loves Kallen and forgot why he was killing himself to begin with. Lelouch is so much better than Eren now: he fought for his goals until the very end, he has serious game, he doesn't forget his plan, and he actually really cares about his friends.

My theory on the Eren retcon ties back to an interview he did where he states he thought he was more like Armim but came to realize he was more like Eren. He mustve hated that so much he retconned Eren to be this dork.

I think the main reason why this ending is the way it is, is probably because Isayama had many different types of endings in mind. He most likely wanted to satisfy every single fan and tried to take bits from each ending and piece them together to make a new original one. At the same time, he wanted to keep the final arc short and simple, but, time ran out and Isayama probably had to desperately join everything together at the last minute. Which explains why so many things seem forced and the ending doesn't feel like a conclusion at all.
But either way the ending was a 7/10 for me cos of how emotional it was and the overall manga will always be 10/10

Just look back at chapter 138, thats the real ending of how would the world react for Eren's death after got Nuke by Armin... He die a villain, no one would thanking him... But then suddenly he still alive and Hallucigenia being introduced to have a free will, and moving by himself and turning people into titans... And here's more plots convenient are introduced to the story... From all 80% of population, the families of the warriors still alive and well, and then that hallucigenia turns them to the titans only to show that Eren would sacrifice himself and turn them back to humans and have them grateful to Eren for that... What is this?! Its so stupid! Imagine if those Warriors loved ones is already dead from the start by the rumbling, would they thank Eren for taking Away The titan curse?! No! There is no way would the warriors would continued the alliance after Eren's dead... They wont hate Armin and friends but im sure they would stop fighting and disband the alliance... No ambassador of peace or whatsoever, and there is no way Armin talk no jutsu would work for them now...
And then the reality the Alliance is consist of a Mass Murderers who killed a lot of people and doesnt know how it feels to lost their loved one because in the end their family is survived... This group of people is sent to negotiate a peace and clean Eren's mess to the world whom may have losing all of their families... Thats a great gamble... Good job Eren... You should just kill your friends...

The real ending is chapter 138, after He got nuked by Armin, he should simply die...
This is one of the reason i hate chapter 139...
As you can see after Armin's nuke, they stopped Eren and the rumbling... Then we can see the dialogues from Annie's father and Marleyan Commander, shaking hands and talking about their Mistakes and plans to atone it... At that time, peace between parties can be achieved, even with the Titan power still remains... Dont know for how long, but it still can be achieved... The story should stop there...
But then turns out Eren still alive, and forced us reader to say that Titan power is dangerous for the world by turning the remaining Eldians to titans, while in truth says otherwise...
And forced us again that Eren can only be killed by the hands of Mikasa because Ymir choose her...
To be honest with you, all of this Eren's flashback with Armin in the path in completely irrelevant to the story... The world just want him death and thats it! The world will keep moving forward towards future and stop the cycle of hating others as they have promised to and the same might goes for paradis...
But its not! He forced us that Eren must be death, sacrificing himself and takes away titan powers and have his friends thank him for that and thank him for making them a heroes to clean up his mess....
It so forced and stupid! This is why chapter 139 is super pathetic...
You can imagine yourself by taking chapter 138 pages up to the hearthwarming Reunion of Reiner and friends to their loved ones and combines it with chapter 139 after 3 years timeskip... It fits... Thats the real ending of AOT, in the End, he should died a villain, and its much more better, cuz maybe he can make more drama like "Eren comes out of his titan but suffered heavy damage, he then sit out and seeing all of his friends comes to him and asking why he do it? He just reply that this is his choice, and then said something like what he said to Historia about ending the cycle of hates, and then do some Lelouch stuff by saying im becomes that hate, not Eldian, not Marleyan not Paradis but only me...
And then asking Mikasa to kills him, Mikasa then Kills him and hug his decapitated head and cry so hard, hard enough that make all remaining survivors hears Mikasa's cry,... Some of them even start to sympathetic about it, while the other friends seeing the sight of walls titan start decaying, indicating that the curse is broken.... Then proceed to happy ending"
If only thats how he deliver the ending, i would cry for sure.... Atleast for me....
Honestly mikasa is a worse character than Sakura at least Sakura had a mini character arc in Naruto yea she was still chasing after sasuke but she put that to the side and got stronger in her own way to be decent in the story . Mikasa just literally stayed the same tied down to one person EREHH the only thing she has is her Ackerman strength and her looks keeping her relevant , if u take mikasa out the story post time skip everything still happens the same way also can’t forget her favorite word EREHH , also the thing that’s completely ruined her It’s BEEN 3 YEARS since Erehh died and she still is sulking over Erehh didn’t Eren tell her to move on and live her life but no she under that damn tree crying and moping
She fought against eren,saved everyone when they were almost dead and even though she loved eren, she killed him to save humanity, she broke the two thousand years curse, and last scene was good for her character it only shows the level of sacrifice she has made, and even in real life there are many people who don't forget there loved ones just because they are dead

Nah Historia doesn't belong to the same tier as Jean. She was a plot device for the majority of the series and got pregnant so she wouldn't be forced to eat Zeke. Isayama just removed her out of the way because she had no reason not to become the Beast. Eren just couldn't use her the same way he used Zeke, she was his friend and she saved his life too. Also she was the queen and just listened to everything Eren said? Without any questions? I think her role is to be the mediator between the alliance and the jaegerists, that's why she had to be alive and stay on Paradis.
Historia actually had one of the best character arcs in the series overall, even though she became more of a device at the end

-Eren’s whole goal was to fight for freedom but yet whole time he pretty much had no choice but to fight for and died for someone else’s issues who died 2,000 years ago. That goes completely against everything his character stands for and the worst part is he stated that he doesn’t know why he did it. Not only that but his feelings for Mikasa completely shifted in the last chapter. Never once was it ever hinted the story that he had romantic feelings for her like that.
-Mikasa was always overrated and annoying from the very start but a lot of people overlooked that because she OCCASIONALLY does some cool shit. Once Levi showed up and when we found out that he was an Ackerman as well then there was really no point of her character existing after that because she was suppose to be the character that always does cool shit but Levi always outperformed her. Her whole character throughout the story was behind Eren’s shadow.
-Armin was fine in the pre time skip until he became the colossal Titan. Let’s be honest here. He’s been really useless post time skip. He’s only used the colossal twice, one was to blow up fodder and 2 was when he got his ass kicked by Eren. And then them hinting that Armin and Annie relationship was really forced. That came out of nowhere. Him trying to talk no jutsu to Zeke didn’t bother me as much before but now looking back at it now it’s really bad.
- Historia’s character is not ruined but I don’t like how she was ignored and also her being pregnant by the farmer who we don’t know shit about really pissed me off. I can admit I’m biased about that because I was an Eren and Historia shipper.
- It was obvious that they didn’t know what to do with Annie’s character after she got out of the crystal. She was better off just being killed off back in season 1 if this is what they were going to do with her.
- The Eldians that turned into Titans in chapter 138 should have not returned back in human form. When Eren was killed and the halluciginea was destroyed then all the Titans including the shifters should have been wiped out. Btw what happened to the Halluciginea anyways?

Hard agree on this.There are so many parallels between Ymir and Historia, Eren and King Fritz. That Stockholm Syndrome reveal that Ymir and Mikasa were actually the same this entire time felt so forced and out of place. I think editors made Isayama change the ending because they thought that the massive amount of Eren x Mikasa shippers would hate the ending if Eren was the father.

Grisha's motivations weren't Eren's. Grisha never was painted to want to get rid of the curse of titans. That was Eren and Zeke's whole thing. Eren can't see what happens after his death because he's the last person with the founding titan so he can't have shown a peaceful world after his death (there isn't even one to show lol).
With the ending we got all he could show Grisha was a world where he stomped all over his home town (Liberio), killed Grisha's parents and a bunch Eldian's outside the walls and the eradication of 80% of humanity. I don't think Grisha would make that trade lol for ridding the titan curse, that wasn't his motivation. If Eren was alive at the end and showed a peaceful world for the Eldians with the cycle finally broken.. that seems to me something Grisha would have been convinced by to allow such a sacrifice. But Eren and the story got retconned last minute, so that scene had to be cut cause it wouldn't make sense now with the ending we ended up getting.

While I think the ending is overheated. All the people calling it a 10/10 and beautiful feel like they’re just lying cause they want to respect the hard work of Isayama and everyone who worked on this. They don’t provide any reason why and ignore all the problems this chapter brings up. I didn’t want some super edgy ending nor did I want every single one of my questions answered cause I knew that wouldn’t happen. But as a fan, I would’ve liked something that didn’t ruin my favourite characters or make the other characters sacrifices worthless. I’m not insulting Isayama or his talent but man, this feels rushed like he didn’t want to end it yet. Until the people calling this ending a masterpiece actually explain why, it’s fair game to continue criticising it for what it is.

I wouldn't say Zeke's character was destroyed when compared to the likes of Armin and Eren. He wasn't ruined since his character ended in the most satisfying way. Zeke was still the most fascinating character from the show. Btw, his entire ideology wasn't changed, but he accepted it was not the way to go.

I think I've honestly created a better ending than Isayama at this point:
There's something thats been bugging me Eren said in one of the episodes that if the Titan user dies and is not eaten the power will go to the firstborn baby.. Why set this up if theres no importance to that statement. I thought Eren would die in Vain and we would get Historia's baby's eyes light up at the end signifying that he failed again and it would reset him back to episode 1 under the tree. This kind of ending would also give us a chance for a continuation of the series in the distant future with different choices and our Eren would be a silent person from the start. Also why would Eren knock up Historia? To prevent her from getting the vaccine and messing with his plans. Then placing the farmer as a decoy so no one knows its his baby. THIS MAKES MORE SENSE THAT THIS ENDING!

@Nle Audemar I think ignoring people's valid complaints about the ending and Eren's character and writing it off as being said out of anger rather than critical analysis is a big disservice not only to them, but to yourself. Everyone one of us saw his journey from the beginning. We had access to his thoughts. The way he thought. If you want to make the argument that he was hiding and lying about all the character growth he went through to those around him. Fine, I can humor that. But you'd have to go farther and say he was lying in his inner monologue and thoughts as if he knew the we could read his mind and he had to trick us. That isn't the case. This ending wasn't the original planned ending, and his character was changed last minute for a cheap twist that turned him into a slave of destiny, a plot device with no agency. It makes the entire journey pointless. I really don't see anything good about this ending except scenes that were meant to be emotional, but isn't relevant when it throws out all the themes, narratives, plots, and character arcs out the window.
Enjoy or analyze the story or ending however you please, but don't write off others because they didn't like it. Not everyone enjoys the same things and everyone is allowed to share their opinion. That's the fun of discussions and being absorbed in stories!

I think the idea in general wasn't bad, when a person is about to die its OK to have second thoughts or regrets, we've seen eren break down when he talks with Ramzi, but still he kept moving... To me it was dissapointing to see the character's main goal to be set aside by the romantic thing. To see eren the boy who sought freedom the most, and that thanks to that was able to understand ymir, and she helping him because of it, just to get at the end a half explanation that actually ymir's purpose would be accomplished by Mikasa all of a sudden.
Why did everyone sacrifice their hearts at the end for then? Because definitely was not for freedom nor the sake of humanity, nor making the kids be free of their predecessors errors or sins...
But at least I love levi being true to his character and recognizing that sacrifice and keeping his promise.
I just really want to know, if this was really Isayamas true ending... Just like erwin wanted to know what was in the basement..

Biggest disagreement is Gabi. She's kept alive by a ridiculous amount of plot armor, so much so that her story is just not convincing.

The alliance genuinely believes that the world will rationally look at them when from the most people pov they were the ONLY ones benefiting from this genocide. All of their goals were destroyed the moment they failed to prevent Eren from starting the rumbling. They did a half assed job for nothing.
Eren was just beat up to a pulp and then revived just to be shredded to pieces:
Eren 120-123: “clearly, blatantly spells out his motives for why he’s doing the rumbling.”
Eren 139: “I don’t know why I did it.”

Someone may not like Eren anymore, but for what the other characters lived (Like Erwin or Levi, or Zeke), AOT will be always one of the greatest stories ever told. It's insane how the story, the orchestra, voices, the thematics etc all perfectly match into one serie. Few times I experienced this feeling. When I first watched Breaking Bad final I was disappointed, but then I started appreciating it. I cannot say the same of Game of Thrones since there was a structural problem and it wasn't meant to be like that.
But I loved Attack on Titan so much that I consider it part of my life. All the tears, the goosebumps, the emotion that it gave me will be always in my heart. Maybe is for this reason that people who don't like the final (I Liked it though and I hope Anime will add extra scenes to explain better) feel this way: because they also consider this masterpiece part of them. I'm literally crying writing this comment.. I will never forget this journey. I will never forget it...

Eren was my favorite and comforting character, a character I can relate to, a character I sympathized with, like a real person I loved him bc he changed my views on life, what it's like to have freedom, and that you can be whoever you want to be and not care about what others think. His quotes have helped me a lot through depression and to just keep moving forward even through the darkest times. Imagine the disappointment I faced when 139 came out. It's like everything was fake, his quotes have lost their meaning now. His character is butchered and it hurts in my chest and gut when I see people saying "you never understood him"

Man, in other fanbases this ending would have been collecively torn to shreds but not in the AOT fanbase. A good majority of people want bottom tier shoujo romance and they got it, I remember when Erwin gave his life to fight the Beast Titan but when fighting the literal Founding Titan, no major character died except for simp lord Eren, I guess these people are really good at their jobs.

Jeans only one I can think that would back eren, Jean like eren would of taken the risks to save who he cares about. Eren x Jean is more realistic than eren x mikasa in the story tho lol

It's hard to believe that one single chapter could ruin a series as good as Attack On Titan. Attack On Titan was almost perfect until chapter 139. When I started reading the chapter, I was literally watching how far the page was scrolled cause I was thinking, "This has to be a very long chapter." When I reached "End" I thought, "This seriously can't be it." Man I used to anticipate new episodes, but now I'm honestly not even thinking about season 4 part 2. Who wants to watch a CGI titan fest with such a horrible ending?
Levi character revolves around many aspects : philosophy called ( choice without regrets) , his backstory with Kenny, his childhood, his suffering from poverty and violence, the burden of falling soldiers, giving meaning for soldiers sacrifice, levi empathy towards orphans and the poor that's why he supported historia to build orphanage, saved poor in trost district, fulfilling promise to suicidal squad, eliminating titan curse,live a life of not fighting for his life.his arc was always about survival since his difficult childhood in underground city, he was fighting for food and habitat since when he was poor child ,witnessed the cycle of hatred where violence was used an absolute answer
