William Mackenzie’s Ghost
William Mackenzie was born in a place called Nelson, near Lancashire in 1794. He was the eldest of 11 children.
He started his career as an apprentice weaver but changed to Civil Engineering.
William became one of Europe’s leading civil engineering contractors in the 1840s, and subsequently became a wealthy man amassing an estate of £340,000, equivalent to £54 million in 2024 money.
William Mackenzie died on 29th October in 1851, aged 57 Years old. He left his then fortune of £340,000 to his youngest brother Edward in that year.
Entombment:
What is particularly interesting about William Mackenzie’s final resting place, is that he is said to have been entombed in a 4.57 metre pyramid shaped tombstone.
According to local legend, William Mackenzie was not just an eccentric character in life but also in death.
It is said that Mackenzie was a man of considerable wealth and influence, known for his love of indulgence, particularly in the pleasures of both the flesh and spirits.
He was alleged to have been an avid gambler, and was rumoured to have made a pact with the devil himself during a game of poker, in exchange for his success and prosperity.
William Mackenzie ultimately forfeited his soul in a high-stakes poker game with Satan, and was told that once he was buried in the ground the devil would come to collect his soul as payment.
The legend goes on to claim that, upon his death, the devil came to collect as per their sinister agreement.
However, Mackenzie was not one to go down without a fight.
His burial defied convention as he was placed in an upright position within his tomb.
The tale also suggests that He was seated at a table, clutching a winning hand of cards in his skeletal fingers, believing that if he remained “unburied”, Satan could never claim his ill-fated prize.
It is said that William Mackenzie’s ghost continues to roam Rodney Street in the dead of night.
Stranded between realms, he is neither subject to the Devil’s grasp nor granted passage to heaven, perpetually haunting the city he once knew so well.
Sightings:
There have been numerous sightings of William Mackenzie since his death in and around Rodney Street.
The most common of which consist of a man in Victorian attire, with a long black overcoat and a Top Hat
So, if you are ever in or around Rodney Street in Liverpool, especially after dusk, keep your wits about you. You have been warned!

I loved going to Belgrave Hall as a kid. I remember one of the museum staff saying that Belgrave House opposite was even more grand inside than Belgrave Hall. Great video.

@johnosgraveyardjaunts2235 I will indeed. I wonder what your connection is?? Love the Welford Rd cemetery footage. That is an amazing place and been on a few of their guided walks round it. Yes I'm Leicester born and bred. I grew up in Birstall so Belgrave wasn't far to visit. So pleased I've found your channel 👍

Where is his bowler hat? But what an unbelievably capable drummer. Just right for LedZepp.
When no one mentions our name... When no one is left alive, that knew us... And when those friends have forgotten our friends.... Then .....we are gone
So true
Brian Jones was without a doubt the most talented member 👏 👌 🙌
Gone way too young 😢

Good Grief! - 50 years on and I still consider their stuff as nothing but a terrible noise - it's nice to know some things remain the same.
