  • Benjamin Sutton was born was born on High Street Leicester in 1806 and was by all accounts a timid boy.
He was educated at the Leicester Grammar School, then a Free
    School.
Benjamin then went to Oxford University, but never took his degree and
joined the Militia instead in 1826.
The Militia weas not for Benjamin, so when he left he took up a
career in banking with the National Provincial Bank.
He made most of his money through dealings on the stock exchange
and by the time he died in 1858 had amassed almost £30,000, the equivalent of about £4.7 million pounds in today’s money.
Benjamin was a private man, unmarried and an only child, so he left most of
his estate to set up the Sutton Charity to support convalescents who
otherwise would have had to return to work immediately after
    discharge from hospital.
Destitute persons who had spent at least one week in either the
infirmary or fever house and had not left it for more than one month,
where to be given not more than £5 (the equivalent of about £800 in today’s money) so that the poor man or woman could be restored to health and start afresh in the world and not have to encounter poverty at a time when they were least fitted to bear it.
The magnificent Celtic cross memorial to Benjamin was sculpted by famous artist Samuel Barfield.

What a kind man, sad about him not having wed or having children and a only child, how terribly lonely, I guess giving to help people was a way for him to deal with his own loneliness. May he Rest In Peace 🙏

This was so interesting. Poor bloke in terms of he must have been pretty lonely being him. However, maybe he never really felt it because of his giving to others I mean it is super rewarding and maybe that's what have him meaning and satisfaction in life. :) ❤.
