The Licker has been my hero since my dad told me about him just after the former champion's death in 1966. When i boxed as an amateur in the 70's i would hang on every word older people would tell me about him including one of my trainers ; i never heard a bad word said about him. Randy has never been forgotten about in the boxing world and probably never will be. The world title fight in 1951 is probably Britain's greatest sporting event along with the 66 world cup. The country was fully behind the Leamington Licker, helped by the fact that only 6 years after WW2 all 5 Turpins had been in uniform, albeit Randy had to wait till 1946. Randy didnt just beat the greatest ever, he hammered him and was never in trouble.Randy outjabbed, outpunched, outthought and outworked Robinson but his main advantage was his strength in the clinches where the Licker was the boss. Was it murdee or suicide ? I'm 100 % convinced it was murder and Freddie Mills met the same fate.

I visited Turpin's grave in 2018 and only found out afterwards that his sister, Joan, is buried on the same row of the cemetery - just a few feet away.
