Discover the True Power Consumption of the Instant Pot!
The Instant Pot is great for prepping ingredients ahead to use during the week. Let’s experiment and find out how much energy, power and time it takes to make three common ingredients! Great for Camping and Off-Grid and to use with your power station.
In this video, I will be cooking hard-boiled eggs, potatoes and yogurt. We will find out how much time it takes (both cooking and total time), the power needed and the energy consumption. Be sure to stick around until the end, where I will show you how to estimate the energy for different sizes of pressure cookers. We power the Instant Pot with the EcoFLow River 2 Pro

    Very interesting. It is pretty amazing what you can accomplish at lower amps. I have a 200W steamer that I am experimenting with, and am pretty shocked at how things like rice and oatmeal come out in 20-30 min with low power. You aren't getting a large qty of food, but I am one person, so it works out.

    I have the bigger instant pot and pressure cook eggs for 2 minutes and slow release for 15 they come out perfect. The bigger units pulls around a 1000 w's while heating up. Does the instant pot size matter on cooking times? I want to get the smaller one for things like eggs, rice etc.. I love my instant pot and power stations. Great video really enjoyed it!

      @@johnmal5975 Hi! No the cooking times don’t change. The time to come to pressure (the pre-heat) may change since a bigger volume is being pressurized, but then you have more power too. I base this on reading numerous web posts and my own experience when I had larger IPs. There will be a small difference in some corner cases, but generally not. The thing that does matter is density , size of food pieces and thickness. For example, for diced potatoes, I would go 4-5 minutes. For a large whole baking potato, 15ish versus the 10 minutes for these larger cubes. Also for the eggs, you could put in even a dozen and be the same. Thanks so much for your comment! I really appreciate it! Katy

    I’m lost. Wasn’t that plugged into a 120v AC connector on the “battery box”? The microwave doesn’t have an “inverter”, it would have a variable transformer. Unless you plug DC into the microwave, it does need an internal inverter.

    • @KatysCampKitchen
      @KatysCampKitchen วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Thank you for your great note. I was shocked to find this myself... Hope this makes sense.... Katy There are two inverters involved. There is an inverter that is part of the power station battery box There is also an inverter type circuit in the microwave. LG patented it 17 years ago and the patent just ran out. Hopefully we will see more of these! Here is some of the patent info... Patent number: US7064306B2 Inverter microwave oven and method for controlling the same Abstract Disclosed herein are an inverter microwave oven and a method for controlling the same, wherein a switching frequency of an inverter is raised during the initial operation of the microwave oven and then lowered during the normal operation of the oven after the lapse of a predetermined time, so as to prevent overvoltage from being applied to a magnetron, which generates electromagnetic waves, during the initial operation, thereby enhancing durability and operational reliability of the inverter. The inverter microwave oven comprises a rectifier for rectifying and smoothing a commercial AC voltage into a DC voltage. The inverter is adapted to perform a switching operation based on the DC voltage from the rectifier to generate a magnetron drive AC voltage. The microwave oven further comprises a magnetron driver for converting the AC voltage from the inverter into a high-power DC voltage and applying the converted DC voltage to the magnetron, and an inverter control unit for varying the switching frequency of the inverter to prevent overvoltage from being applied to the magnetron.

    Thanks so much for this! I had been considering a Commercial Chef 0.6 ft^3 "600 Watt" microwave for exactly this reason, to hook up to EcoFlow River 2 Pro. I like the size of the Commercial Chef a lot, and the low cost, and the simplicity of the non-digital twist-knob operations. But then the one video I found of it measured in operation, showed it peaking ~870 Watts. JUST a little over the operational range of the River 2 Pro. RATS! So it seems I am driven to this inverter technology. I wonder why only Panasonic makes this type. At least, I don't see ANY other makers mentioning inverter technology. It'd be interesting to know if inverter is any more efficient. Like heating up quart of water to boiling does it use less Watt-hours than a traditional, or is it about the same in the end.

    • @KatysCampKitchen

      @vincentfox Hi Vincent! I think only Panasonic has been making this because of patents. The patent just expired- I think this June, so I would expect to see others in the future if they think it is viable from a sales perspective. I don’t know if they are any more energy efficient overall. I have a video in the works on heating water. I am planning it for September and will see if I can borrow a relative’s microwave to test that. I really appreciate your comment!

    Good information Katy. My wife and I are on a no-red meat diet and I will try chicken breasts to make smothered chili verde with a power station. I have always made the pork version this way and I recently did the chicken breast with a drained can of black beans. I like LaVictoria's Green Chili Salsa. I have always wanted to put a box on the outside of my house to charge power stations. I may get around to it this fall when it's not so sweltering.

    Is this the kind of cooktop that pulses in and off or does that wattage stay constant when you put it on lower power?

    • @KatysCampKitchen
      @KatysCampKitchen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! It stays constant and doesn’t pulse. When it reaches temp, it will cut off and on, but not pulsing - I hope that makes sense. Also, as you pick higher temps, the wattage increments up but stays consistent Hope this answers your question… please let me know … Thanks! Katy

      @KatysCampKitchen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Keith I will get back to you later tonight when I get home - it will be very late tonight A couple of tips that may help in the interim….. If you are using a power station, leave the cooktop unconnected while you power the cooktop. Wait about 30 seconds before plugging in. Then hit pause / clear TWICE If you are on a power station, select watts and toggle down to 600 watts and make sure you are on medium low. Then press start I’m doing this from memory and hope it works for you In the meantime, are there any lights when you power it? Thanks Katy😀

      HI Again Keith, In a recent video, I had a demo of my cooktop not turning on like I thought it should. I showed how I solved the problem. It is in the mac and cheese video that is in the last 3 or 4 videos that i have posted. Check around time 2:55 where I show how to (hopefully) get yours to operate also. Here is the video link - I hope it works, if not, it is the mac and cheese video - it has the huge 3X Less writing on the right side of the thumbnail. Please let me know whether or not this works for your situation. I am happy to try and help you through it, if what I showed in the video doesn't work. I want to boil water in my van house. I have two EcoFlow Rivers. What appliances can you recommend to boil water? It's just one person and I don't want the appliance to take up a lot of space. Thank you!

    • @KatysCampKitchen
      @KatysCampKitchen 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      HI! Thanks so much for your comment! Funny you should ask - I have this in my list of videos coming out in July (I have often wondered if people would be interested in this topic). I am not done with it yet, or I would link it to you.... For a stand alone small electric kettle, I would recommend the Stoke Voltaics Joulle - it needs 500Watts to run and it brings about 2 cups of water to a full boil in 5-6 minutes. They are pricey but really work and are very sturdy. You can also heat food in them. They often have a promotion (or two) with them, where they add in some extra items - presently they have a free stirring stick with them. Just look for the extra savings orange rectangle and click on that to add the stirring rod for free. Here is an (affiliate) link: amzn.to/4bI6Frf - I have been using mine for about a year and really like it. It really works. For cleaning out food, I just use a bottle brush. More often, I just heat the water and add it to a cup with my coffee or Ramen, etc. For boiling larger amounts of water, I have also used a nuwave induction cooktop with a saucepan to heat water - I showed this in this video: th-cam.com/video/dt1NacGPBoM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MQFTfl2nytkSJWRS If that video link doesn't work, the name of the video is Induction Cooking with Small Power Stations Off Grid - Salmon with Vegetables and Hamburgers - Around time 6:50 is where the water boiling starts. It took about 15 minutes to boil 4 cups of water and used 120 Watt hours. Here is an affiliate link to the cooktop: amzn.to/3V3Lj0j This works really well if you have enough power - I have used it with a Bluetti EB3A that has a 600 Watt inverter. You will need an induction compatible saucepan - a magnet should stick to the bottom). Here is my favorite little saucepan: amzn.to/3wZ5qoq (affiliate link). That saucepan also has a built in strainer on the lid and fits into a small space because the handle is compact. You can see me using the saucepan and induction cooktop in the macaroni video that is a few videos back. There are a couple of other products that I am waiting for, that will be part of the test. One is a 12 ounce water heater that holds 12 ounces and the other is one of the old fashioned coils. I haven’t tested these yet, but provided affiliate links to them, so you can see what I am trying. If I remember correctly, they run on less power and may work better for you. Here are links to those: amzn.to/3VkiWfL amzn.to/4ck0ycP I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions! I hope you see this! Thanks, Katy ;)

    Hi - I have a work van with a 700w inverter in the back (need to keep the van running so it doesn't cut out) Do you think an inverter microwave will run off this inverter? I have alternatively been looking at getting a power station too

    • @KatysCampKitchen
      @KatysCampKitchen 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Just getting back to you now that I can check my detailed data.... Some of this is shown around Time marker 2:10 in the video and then later. With a 700 Watt Inverter, you should be able to run power levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. Power Level 3 is Low and PL 4 is medium-ish. I have reheated many meals with that level. It is like setting a regurlar microwave to medium so that the food can cook through versus cooking the outside only and the inside being cold. Power level 3 and 4 can also be used to defrost. Around time marker 8:10, there is a listing power Power Level versus Power needed. The Pink column is the power level and the Blue column are the Watts needed to run at that power level. Using this, you can estimate the power level that could be achieved if you decide to get a power station or another inverter.... FYI, in the video, I had showed that an EcoFlow River has a 720 Watt inverter - that is in error - it has only a 600W (this information is in the video description also). The 720 Watts of the EcoFlow River is when it is on boost and it would only run a few seconds there. I have the later model EcoFlow River 2, and it works great for the microwave and will go up to power level 5. I have run the microwave with the EcoFlow River 2 Pro and the Bluetti EB3A quite a bit and both work well in the small power station area. I hope this helps! Please let me know if this is the information you were looking for and if you have any other questions! Thanks, Katy

    Your video was quoted by Gemini Google AI for an example that an instant pot does not use the full wattage listed on the the device, for the full duration of cooking. I will consider using an instant pot to cook beans and pasta while using solar / battery power of a camper van. My main power draw will be my laptop, and I can control the power it uses, but want to use it many hours per day. I have other devices such as lights, power to aid devices associated with a diesel heater and some miscellaneous other small things occasionally.

    • @KatysCampKitchen
      @KatysCampKitchen 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Thanks for your comment and for letting me know about the quote! The Instant Pot was why I started my channel as I couldn't find any real information about energy usage. If you haven't seen my microwave video, most microwaves use MORE than the quoted amount as far as instanteous power goes, so when people try to use a portable power station, they are surprised it doesn't work - the microwaves advertise the cooking power. On the power tag, they give a power consumption number - this must be an average of some type, because the instanteous is definately higher by a significant amount. This was an eye opener to me.... Thanks again! Katy
