    Your "mint Billietiae" is 110% an Atabapoense. The red backs are a dead give away, no Billietiae will have a red back. "Back Billietiaes (aka Billie x ata, dark form Billie)" are actually dark form Atabapoense. They're not Billietiaes at all. This was proven by the inflorescence.* Billies will never have a red back, and the inflorescence is that of Atabapoense. I can send you more information on this weird myth and mislabeling if you'd like.

    • @GreenChickGardens

  • @boomchiga956
    @boomchiga956 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you want to know about the mint billietiae, they all originate from a farm in Chiang mai that crossed billietiae with atabapoense (this cross is also referred to as 'black billietiae'). Yours is definitely a mint black billietiae. One of the seeds from the original crossing produced the 'mint' phenotype. Many have tried the cross but no one has been able to get the same variegation. Michael D'Andrea knows more about the plant because he has visited the farm. They are also listed online as blue-grey mint billietiae or orange-blue billietiae because the emergent leaves can be very colorful. Very rare, it's probably the rarest thing in your collection actually. Some really good specimens seen at this year's BKK plant show. They love high light and the leaves can even harden off to a bright, solid yellow-lime color if given the correct conditions. It is a bit more of a spider mite magnet than normal billies/atabaps, so keep a more watchful eye maybe. Would highly recommend giving it a good moss pole to get it to size up, if not it takes a very long time.

    • @GreenChickGardens

      Ata x Billietiae is not a real hybrid, it never happened. These plants being labeled as such (or as "black Billietiae") are actually dark form Atabapoense. The red backs AND inflorescence are true trade marks of Atabapoense. The hybrid never happened. This is such a weird myth...

    • @boomchiga956
      @boomchiga956 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@reptigoddess I’ll defer to Michael D’Andrea on this, he is one of the most knowledgeable people in the International Aroid Society. It is a cross of billie and atabap from what he told me so I think we should stick with the facts instead of projecting our hunches onto the situation. A hybrid can still have features of one of the parents, like similar coloring of the back of the leaves and inflos. That is the point. Look at Ecuagenera’s cross of spiritus sancti and pinnatilobum aff (Pangui Sunset). The cross has the red veins and back of its spiritus parent. That doesn’t mean the cross didn’t happen.

    • @reptigoddess
      @reptigoddess หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@boomchiga956 Where's proof of him saying this, and pictures? No one has come forward about this supposed hybrid. No IAS member/collector/grower has confirmed it, either. The big names in the hobby also denounce this claim.

      @@GreenChickGardens yeah, I was talking with someone about them in '20 or '21 when they were going for such high prices because I thought Philos were easy to prop. Apparently ss is different. He said he had the best success with having at least 4 nodes above and below where the cut will be and only cutting through about halfway at first. Then when the base has produced the first leaf on the activated node, then remove the top fully. It will be a while before I even think about cutting mine but good information to have.

    I personally love paraiso verdes but I do agree their leaf to petiole ratio is quite atrocious. Love the mamei as well especially the neon variegated one. I do wonder if environmental conditions has anything to do with the way the variegation exhibits itself or is it just different variegation genetics causing the two different types of variegation you have on the mamei. I’ve been working on improving! 😅 With the mamei, we’ll see if it changes to matching the other as they both become use to the same environment!

      I actually sold this plant! I took a cutting for myself and sold the rest, sadly the cutting did not make it 😩 expensive mishap

    Some of these plants are not alocasias. The first plant is a colocasia - I've had that variety for over 10 years now. They are closely related colocasias as a rule of thumb get much larger than alocasias and much more cold hardy. I can grow colocasias outside in coastal California throughout the year including Winter, but not alocasias. I also grow some of my colocasia in my pond. The ones in the pond grow a lot larger than the ones I have growing in ponds outside my home. They really love their roots being submerged in water since they evolved in swamps.

      Regal Shield is an alocasia. All 10 of these are alocasia, the last bonus plant is indeed a Colocasia though! Other than that, I agree with your observations on growing habits! Thanks for watching. 😊

      regal shield is an alocasia, it grows big and sometimes can adapt to direct sunlight and wet soil like colocasia but it is an alocasia nonetheless. Look at the petiole where it ends at the end of the leaves unlike all colocasia that have the petiole at the middle of their leaves
