      @@franetimalaga I see. Not sure how to replace that part. There should be a springy type mechanism there that grabs the part sticking out from the lid. I don't think I've seen someone repair that part before unfortunately. If the complete "gripper" is missing in that hole I would consider some kind of friction fit against the lid part. Maybe 3D-print something in TPU. You wouldn't get the push to open/close function, but at least the lid would stay in place. And then just gently pull at the sides or the top part to open it.

      The sketches are compiled before they can be flashed to a chip. There are multiple compiler tool chains. The correct one must be used based on the target chip manufacturer and type. Arduino, or other IDEs does this for you. Then the resulting .hex or .bin file gets flashed to the chip.

      The readings can be quite a bit off when you're handling the sensors like I did. They're more accurate when they're mounted and not influenced by me touching them and breathing on them. Could be a video editing thing too. Or the sensors are bad. Or they need software calibration. There could be many reasons to be honest.

    I would really like to see the ability to use cartridges with a simulator. There were a few oddball cartridges (like MIDI interface) that weren't common and were hardware add-ons rather than software. With a microcontroller I could see the possibility of making one that could plug into USB, but I haven't had a chance to really look into that yet.

    • @HAGSLAB

      I'm not sure about cl65. But you can use cc65/ca65/ld65 instead for more control and features, like outputting map files. cl65 is the "do it all" tool. Have a look at this makefile for an example: github.com/hagronnestad/c64matrix/blob/main/Makefile.

    That's pretty cool! I was hoping you would list the program after running it, so we could see what I assume would be a BASIC stub. [Edit:] I found out by compiling your sample C source code and see that it has a BASIC stub with a single line: 800 SYS2061 However, the program only runs once and then crashes. Are you able to run it multiple times successfully?

    • @HAGSLAB
      @HAGSLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      As you found out, the compiler adds a BASIC stub to call into the program. There are command line arguments that lets you change that behavior though. You can also change the load address of your program and such if you want to make a cartridge for example.

    1200 baud is feasible for an SHTF situation . . . if we're talking about amateur radio "packet" stations (they are alive and well in various parts of the US, like here in Pennsylvania). Great video!

      @HAGSLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Sending data packets over amateur radio is really cool I think. It would be fun to get into amateur radio at some point. My knowledge is limited to stuff I've seen on TH-cam :)

      @@HAGSLAB , I encourage you to "get your ticket," brother. I've been having a blast with amateur radio over the last few years, with an emphasis on emergency communications. Amateurs have access to a slew of sophisticated digital modes now. Like our beloved Commodore 64, packet radio (using the AX.25 protocol) is 40-year-old technology at this point (but still has a place in amateur radio).

    Is there a cross platform or even C64 specific graphics/sound API available similar in concept to SDL for instance?

    • @HAGSLAB
      @HAGSLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      Not that I know of. I think the audio and video hardware is too unique on the different platforms. Even if there was a library that would abstract away those differences, you would end up with a very limited API that wouldn't be able to make use of all the quirks in the hardware of the different platforms.

  • @safatkhan676

    When I turn my C64 on, the screen kind of momentarily flickers but nothing changes. You can only tell that it responded but no other screen appears. I checked inside and found the flip flop to not be outputting right stuff. VIC chip gets the two clock signals (8.1 and 14.3 MHz) but outputs no clock signals for the CPU from pin 17. U29 isn’t outputting the 1 MHz it should after the 2 MHz that I measured it was receiving. I don't even know if it's possible that one faulty chip has cut off video.

    • @HAGSLAB
      @HAGSLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be hard to troubleshoot these things. Sometimes it looks like a chip is not working because the signal seems wrong, but that can also be because of the input on the chip it's connected to is pulling the signal down. The easiest way to troubleshoot is if you have access to a working machine and can test ICs in that machine. But I know that that is not usually the case. I use this guide sometimes when there are visual clues in the video output: www.pictorial64.com/index.htm

    • @safatkhan676
      @safatkhan676 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HAGSLAB I wish I had a working board. Although saying that, most of my chips are soldered into the board. I don't know how you all TH-cam folks always have boards with socketed ICs. Even to attempt swapnostics, I have to solder and desolder a lot of stuff.

    • @HAGSLAB
      @HAGSLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had to desoldered A LOT of ICs and put in sockets. But yeah, it is a lot of work. I like Adrians Digital Basements ZIF64, where he's put in ZIF-sockets.

      @safatkhan676 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HAGSLAB Adrian, you and various others on YT have a lot of content on fixing C64s. Where they fall short for me is that a lot of them require you to already have a working one to help diagnose the problem. I hope I get to swap out that 74LS74 (U29) and lets the machine at least output some video. Need to go get a soldering kid and some sockets!

    • @HAGSLAB
      @HAGSLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      @@safatkhan676 Yeah, fair point. I don't really try to make my videos like repair tutorials though. They're mostly for entertainment and my own amusement, but hopefully they can be a bit educational as well. Adrian and others are way better than me to do diagnostics and this C64 was my first repair project.
