Hey, that tool was made by Data/Tropyx, I also use it for testing quickly CIA's while fixing machines. I asked him about error numbers, they are basically a decimal representation of what bits are not responding correctly on the CIA port. i.e. ERROR 192 on port A of CIA = 11000000 in binary and that translates to bit 7 and 6 (PA7 and PA6). Also do not throw away broken CIA's, some can still be used in 1571 drive.

Is there a way to know if they will work in the 1571 based on the error bitmask?
That's interesting, I have a heap of broken CIAs in my dead parts bin. I just don't seem to be able to throw away original ICs, even when they are broken :)
Worked way better than I imagined to be honest! Very happy to own a desoldering station now. Do you use flux when desoldering? I feel like it may have helped with getting all the solder sucked up, I don't know if it's recommended though.
Yes that was one of the smoothest desoldering of a 40-pin IC I've ever seen. And he did it twice in a row, and it was his first time using a desoldering gun. Color me impressed. I think I need to brush up my desoldering skills!

Nice first desoldering job. It went smooth. I never get the chip free after the first round.

@@HAGSLAB I tried using flux sometimes, but I don't think it matters that much. It creates more smoke that will clog up the filter I think.
Yeah, I was afraid of that as well. Guess I'll give it a try without the flux next time.
