Wringing in the New Year | What Now? with Trevor Noah Podcast
In this week’s episode I’m back home in South Africa. My good friends Anele Mdoda and Sizwe Dhlomo and I have a spirited conversation about the big issues that worry us as we hurtle into 2025. We discuss whether the global experiment is failing, revolution as a form of positive societal connection, and how external forces shape us and our children.

There is a book series I read in middle school (Matched - I believe) that did exactly what the sweet lady proposed. You took tests and did interviews while growing up and then at “graduation” you were matched up - it was early 2010s ya dystopian and I don’t think I finished book 2 but it didn’t work out 😅 First episode I’ve seen - definitely got a subscription

18:00 I think Trevor and Anele are talking about the Freudian Psychosexual theory that states the impression that opposite and same sex humans make an impact on a child at different ages and stages of their lives.

Digital direct democracy is a beautiful idea, but Trevor's implementation ideas need a lot of work. 38:08 An official, centralized government app to explain what you're voting on? What could go wrong? And forget about people who don't have or want "the device". 28:59 Bureaucrats "have to" execute people's decisions? Or else what - people will vote that they suck? 27:30 "It's secure, don't worry"? Sure, unlike all computer systems ever in history, this one has no vulnerabilities... 🙄 45:53 Christiana's point about burnout needs to be taken a lot more seriously. I was wondering the same: who gets to propose these referenda? How many are we talking? Is voting mandatory or incentivized? Is it global, national, or municipal? Supposing it's nationwide in the US, that any individual is free to propose a referendum at any time, and that one out of every hundred people propose one each week, that's 3.5 million referenda per week. Who'd have time for that? Anyway, I do think the basic principle is great, and this idea deserves more thought. I just think that Trevor is being awfully naïve about the implementation and potential pitfalls.

The assigned partner theory is too complex and nuanced that that would be a very long and arduous process to make that program work successfully. And I agree with what Trevor said about fixing the wrong part of the problem. Treating the symptom and not the root of problem.

It is quite common for parents to be concerned about the external factors that could shape their child’s behaviour. Moreover, in a single parent home, as a mom you are trying your utmost to entrench a more disciplined behaviour. Just be also mindful that this is a stage where your child will tend to be more expressive than ever. Here’s a thing @ d end of the day they need to learn what’s good and bad behaviour and parents have the responsibility to demonstrate this. When parents fail at doing this, the children will adopt learned behaviour from anyone they interact with. But it goes beyond this, there are cultural and social norms, family values and dynamics which also play a role as key elements besides friends.

It's kinda interesting to these three when they're together, i have seen a lot talked about on social media about Sizwe and all but I'm like why people tend to hate the guy so much because he is straight forward and a logical thinker. Maybe it's like what they were saying about social media where people can just have some type of power I don't know but what i do know is that they're friends coz there's no yes man between them, like Anele said conflicts are brings people together you might not agree about the whole idea but there will be parts that you will agree on so you can't just shut someone down just because you don't agree with them or don't share the same perspective. All in all it's okay. I like Anele's parenting it's insightful and make you think even as myself who doesn't have kids but you understand the concept, detailed reasoning as a parent or as myself a part-time parent to my nephew and those why's of a child can be irritating but again finding a common ground of why you do it and when they didn't listen and that happens you remind them why you said it in the first place because yourself was a kid before. Man it was a lot of information and i could go on but i think everyone sure looked at it in their perspective without trying to defend yours
