  • Roger Federer and I break down how moving on from major chapters in our lives has affected us and how Roger’s desire to document the moment accidentally turned into the powerful documentary, Federer: Twelve Finals Days. We also discuss the future, our friendship, and our attendance record breaking tennis match for charity in South Africa which, surprisingly, Roger won.

Food for thought . I am marrocan and french but I look like a french (More like a white person because I got curly hair everyone thinks I am Spanish or Portugeese). I had this thought after a Tiger Woods documentary, black people wanted to make him a black figure and they where disapointed in the US when he said "I am the Asian" because his mother raised him, like a lot of mum did.
So even if you skin is "black" your culture and your identity is your mother's one or the one you feel the closest to.
Now when I saw your picture I was like "yeah the two Swiss guy finally together" and a friend was like no he comes from South Africa. Well I guess we all have a Trump friend who can't get that you can be both or it's still in a lot of people mind that you are rather this or this, maybe I get it because I am mixed to. Don't know but just an observation.
I love funny people so for your next guest a funny one

We would like to chat with those. You know how to make your guests feel at ease even when life has not given them time to feel so. You are blessed.

Man, do I miss seeing this guy play. The mannerisms on the court. The way he would inspect two balls as he walked up to the baseline, tossing one behind him as he got ready to serve. The way the camera showed him in close-up, sort of looking into the camera but not really, as he focused on his opponent and waited for the serve. The way he would walk to his chair after each game, the camera following him as he towered in the frame, nothing betraying his stoic facade except his determination & mental toughness. Yes, all the winning was memorable but so were the little moments that defined him and were as numerous & dependable as the seasons.

So well put. Just such a fond memory of following this guy since 2005 as teenager. I don’t have any huge sporting idols but just the length of time this guy was there is just wild. The other interesting thing was Federer always felt very adult. Contrast that to Alcarz today. Almost Sinner like but more style and emotional story

dont forget the iconic backhands down the line at important moments. Or how he kinda side steps and fades side way for an inside out forehand. Or how he only grunta on the second serve.

Regarding Rafa and how he was so profoundly affected by Roger's departing. Roger used the question to pivot to his broader relationships with the top tour players over his illustrious career. However, I imagine Rafa was in in tears because something great was moving on. Roger, but not just Roger...also the possibility of writing something in the annals of history, as they had done on numerous occasions despite and because of their inherent opposition, was over. The clash of these two particular titans is now history, and will one day, if the best is availed for their effort, sacrifice and heroism, will become folklore...talked about by aging fans at club bars, or older coaches to promising youths. 'Ahh, well you should have seen Federer and Nadal, now there was a lesson in commitment, in rising to the moment.' What a great era to have been a fan.
