    Is Economics a more suitable major than Finance if you want to become more employable in the actuarial science field? What will look better on your resume?

    • @MorganAdair
      @MorganAdair 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm honestly sure that either one would be fine. I can't speak too much as to a finance major since that's not what I did, but I don't think you could go wrong either way. With economics you might get a little bit more experience with problem solving, coding, and advanced math if it's a more analytical degree than a policy-related one. I did a bachelor of science in economics for example, rather than a bachelor of arts.

      @MorganAdair 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's exciting! I think my best piece of advice would be to do a lot of practice problems relating to whatever you're doing in class at any given time. That way you'll get exposure to several different types of problems, and you'll be able to recognize strategies to use when certain types of problems come up. "Practice makes perfect" turns out to be a pretty accurate statement in this case!

      Finding a job after graduating can definitely be really difficult. What I would say is to keep going; someone will eventually bite eventually. Leverage any connections you may have, and maybe even consider jobs that you may not think you're qualified for. Also, it may be that you'll have to do something unrelated to your major to start, but you'll be able to pivot later on once you have some more experience. It sounds like you do have relevant experience, but time can be on your side if you are patient.

      @MorganAdair interesting. Would you say this is mainly the case if you are going into academia like doing post docs and stuff because I know starting off, it doesnt pay well? I assume if you choose to go for a career in the industry even if it's not astronomy related (astronomy and physics as far as I know is a versatile major) it shouldn't be that much more difficult than other majors?

    • @MorganAdair
      @MorganAdair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I would say it would be especially difficult if you go into a PhD and do post docs because you would hardly earn enough to support yourself, let alone a family. I think you're right about it not necessarily being more difficult than any other major if you major in physics and go into industry.

    Great video! Was wondering about some Coaching Actuaries features.. I used TIA for exam FM and really liked their "today" feature and provided formula sheets. The "today" feature basically planned out your entire studying process from the beginning to the exam and told you what you needed to do each day to reach your study goal. They also provided formula sheets that were well organized for me to print out and reference while working problems. Does Coaching Actuaries have anything like this? I am thinking about switching for Exam P since I hear Adapt is almost a must have, but if they don't have these features maybe I'll stick with TIA. Thanks for any help!

    • @MorganAdair
      @MorganAdair 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      CA does have a scheduling feature, but it's really not super fleshed out imo. You can tell it when the exam is and how many days you want to spend practicing and it will create a schedule for how you should work through the learn part. They also do have a formula sheet with most of the important stuff that you'll need to remember. But you're right, I think Adapt is probably the best thing about CA because imo practice is the most important part of studying. Also, their earned level system is supposed to pretty accurately predict how prepared you are for the exam. I'm saying all of this without having ever experienced TIA, so I can't comment on CA vs TIA directly. Hope this helps!

    I’m 58 and I’m a registered rep (FINRA) at an insurance & annuity company. I’m studying for FM first because it’s new material for me. Stats is my strong suit. Goal: be the world’s oldest actuarial intern and (maybe) the first person to go from the call center to actuarial. 😂

      You're not alone. I'm in my mid thirties, working in the Pensions industry and trying to pass Exam FM as well. It's so hard with a fulltime and demanding job and life. I have given up and restarted so many times. We got this

    When you say Astronomy, are you also referring to astrophysics ? Because I heard that astronomy and astrophysics are the same thing. Is this true ?

      Correct. Astronomy and astrophysics are typically used synonymously.

    Dear Morgan, I hope you don't take this personal, but getting a job thanks to my dad's connections being so underqualified is something I would keep to myself, especially knowing there are so many qualified people who can't get one. Just think about it, in order for you to receive a job offer, the company had to say no to someone most likely more qualified than you. It took me 15 seconds to find you and your current company on Linkedin. Don't make them look bad.

    My mum says that being a biomedical scientist is better than an Astronomy because there aren’t many astronomers out there than biomedical scientists. But I rlly love space and although I hate maths and I’m terrible at it, I still wanna try. Should I stick with Astronomy?

      She is right that there are relatively few astronomers out there and I would guess that there would be more biomedical scientists than astronomers. Astronomy is very heavy on math, so I'm not sure that I would recommend going into it if you really don't like math. There's always the possibility that you could improve at math over time and maybe not hate it as much, so you can definitely try out astronomy and then if the math is too much or just not enjoyable, you don't have to stick with it.

    Hi Morgan, what piece of advice would you give someone like me, who is looking for a job as an actuary but doesn't have a father who knows someone who knows someone who is a partner at a firm?

      That's a very good question 😂. For me, having a LinkedIn account and updating my profile with all of my experience and skills and whatnot has helped a lot. I get contacted by multiple recruiters a week on LinkedIn. Maybe that's something to look into?
