This video was very encouraging to me! I’m about to start my fifth year of college because I changed my major from Nursing to Data Science. Until about 2 years ago I didn’t know what an actuary was or what they did, but with further research and videos like this on TH-cam it makes me more confident to know the traditional route isn’t the only route to take. I haven’t taken an actuarial exam yet though. Would you recommend Exam P or FM first?
Exactly! It's perfectly okay to take a roundabout route and to change your mind on what you might want to do. In terms of Exam P or FM, I decided to take FM first because I didn't have a ton of time to study and I'd seen a lot of opinions online that FM was easier than P, and that has turned out to be true in my case. It really depends person to person, but I'm happy with my choice to take FM first. It gave me some confidence that I could pass these exams.
I stumbled upon your videos watching ones on physics, time travel and astronomy. I too started my professional career as an actuarial student with no experience or exams (P&C). Now I am retirement age. Even though I live north of Chicago, I didn't get a job in Chicago, but up in the middle of Wisconsin. I was told I was the only one who knew what I was getting into with the exams (I did research it to death). I quickly got out of it after 2 exams, though and went into programming and spent a good career doing that in various capacities. Good luck and I hope you make a good career out of it. You seem to have good study habits based on your degrees and you should do fine.
I feel like our paths are so similar! I got my degree in econ with a minor in analytics, took 4> years to graduate with a mental health break, and didn't know what I wanted to do by the time graduation rolled around. Unfortunately, I didn't realize I wanted to go the actuary route until recently (1.5 years post graduation) and only have a year at an admin job to add to my resume. I'll be sitting Exam P in November and am excited to sort of restart my life!
Hi Morgan, what piece of advice would you give someone like me, who is looking for a job as an actuary but doesn't have a father who knows someone who knows someone who is a partner at a firm?
That's a very good question 😂. For me, having a LinkedIn account and updating my profile with all of my experience and skills and whatnot has helped a lot. I get contacted by multiple recruiters a week on LinkedIn. Maybe that's something to look into?

Cause I am living in the middle of nowhere and a career switcher. Applied jobs for months and with no luck of landing one. Is your company hiring? Getting desparate here....

I wasn't necessarily looking for a job when I was contacted by a recruiter for the one I'm currently at, so I'm not sure if I have any direct tips for finding a remote job. So far I have only had phone calls and no acctual inventations to interviews but the calls have been very positive and didnt seem to mind that I am a physicist and not a pure blooded mathematician.

What a coincidence! I'm sure you'll be able to find something with 1 or 2 exams passed even though you don't have explicitly relevant experience!
