Relaxing Canoeing and Campfire Breakfast
Good morning! Here I make a morning campfire after paddling my Swift Prospector 14 canoe to the beach. I needed a morning alone to get away for a while, relax and make some coffee and breakfast over an open fire. Every so often I need a morning such as this to take a breath of fresh air and relax. I hope you find some relaxation in this video and enjoy the longer un-cut paddling scenes in ASMR fashion. This video was filmed in 4K.

In this video, I head out solo with a canoe full of gear to go hot tent winter camping in a snow storm and test out my new Pomoly Hex Plus hot tent and Pomoly Dwellar wood stove. I paddled my canoe on a remote pond and found a beautiful campsite on the far end. After setting up the tent and getting a warm fire going in the wood stove I cooked an easy camping meal- Pizza dip! Are you still using this system? Just got back from a canoe trip using the Lifestraw Go bottle. It was really difficult to get a reasonable amount of water through and almost ruined the trip. It was so hard to get any water out that it felt like I was constantly drinking in order to maintain any hydration. Does this have an adequate flow rate?

    • @BackcountryPaddler
      @BackcountryPaddler 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The flow rate on the BeFree is the best thing about it. I've had trips ruined by a bad water filtration setup (Sawyer Squeeze) but everything changed when I went this route. I just suggest keeping a separate bottle for after you filter the water. When the water sits in the Hydrapak for a while it can taste "plasticky"... hope that helps! Mark

    Nice video. I paddled that same trip in the late 70s in the spring. My memory is it is a bit of a slog. Consider rubber boots or tingles, sleep in your socks, they will be dry by morning. We generally try to paddle until mid afternoon and then camp. Allow an extra day and don't bite off more than you can chew. Maybe carry a tarp so you have a place to lounge around in camp. Glad you are getting out there. Its a wonderful passtime. Maybe work with a pole for those upstream slogs. Pole is the way to go.

    Good idea about taking a picture of a map section to laminate. Saves cutting up maps (like I used to do). I have a SPOT beacon that I've carried in the backcountry for many years. Never without it, or my mapping GPS.

      Definitely smart to use the SPOT. I really need to activate my InReach Mini2! I've yet to use it....

    Tri-tip on the campfire? Ok, now you've got me drooling. I'm finding that I spend more time admiring your meals than I do the scenery. Snowing today, but Spring can't be too far away. Did you get my email with questions about your canoe?

      Hey Ed, I definitely do eat good out in the woods. I swear Riley ate over half of that steak though. 😆 I will check my email.

    Good going, Mark. "Adapt and Overcome". Thumbs up on the pizza dip. Did you consider taking the canoe back across the pond and breaking ice with the paddle. I can't tell how thick the ice was, but it looked thin. In any case, you got yourself out of a pickle in good spirits.

      Haha believe me when I say I wanted to and tried, but it was thick enough to not risk it. I was out there alone and if something happened and I went in it would be bad news... so I decided to take the difficult but safe route. 🙂 that pizza dip was good thanks for the reminder I need to make that again soon. So simple but so good!!!

    Great video, Mark! I'm watching this as the snow falls outside and the temp is a cozy +6F...dreaming of Spring. My wife and I moved permanently to the ADKs 3 years ago to our, then, vacation home. I'm a bit older now (85) but still enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, and fishing.

      I hope you're watching it indoors at a balmy 70° at least! Haha. I give you a ton of credit still getting it and doing it at 85 thats a great accomplishment. Bet it helps keep you young! I'm ready for Spring too.. got at least one paddling trip planned so far. 😁

      Oh yes, the indoor temp never gets below 68 unless I run out of propane and firewood. As for paddling, I tore a rotator cuff 2 years ag (not repairable) so my paddling days are few, unless I want to go in circles. Maybe I'll just tag along with you vicariously in these videos. BTW, I love the meal that you mixed up here. Sounds delicious.@@BackcountryPaddler

      Ah, sorry about your shoulder. What about single blade paddling on one side? Maybe less impact? But then again I'm not sure doing that with a torn rotator cuff is doable either.

    Great to see what gear others like to use, and what they bring with them on back country trips. Thanks for sharing, and for some insights into some of the gear and why you selected it.

    I always wanted to do what you just did. Due to age and heath issues I can’t theses days but I really enjoyed your trip. I did look for budget friendly canoes here in Arkansas because I am on a fixed income. Any suggestions? I did go to a large Bass Pro shop while I was on a trip to North Carolina. They had every kind of boat and jet ski known to man but none of the staff even knew if they carried canoes. When I was finally able to see a few of them through one of the windows a manager had to unlock a door on the back end of the property in order for me to get near them. How sad is that? I really enjoyed the video a lot! Thank you.

      That would be great if you could get your hands on one! There's no better feeling than paddling a canoe. What about online? Hornbeck sells very lightweight canoes at affordable prices. You could always have one shipped. Or perhaps look for used canoes on Craigslist or Marketplace. Thanks for coming along on my trip in the meantime! 🙂
