I don't normally comment here, but I have to stand up for the show The Tudors. It was revolutionary at the time it came out-which was years before the GoT craze. The Show was like GoT before GoT and was probably instrumental in getting the GoT show made, as it showed that there is an audience for political drama with spice. Also, despite it making everything seem sensational, it's surprisingly historically accurate. A lot of the scenes are either rumours believed to be true at King Henry VIII time, or are based on real historical facts. They even got Anne Boleyn's execution perfect. I think if a lot of this audience tried season 1 they'd be hooked.

I think people have argued that if you like this series you will hate The False Prince series and visa versa and I fully support that propaganda because I instantly wanted to read more of the False Prince series and I struggle to go on to the second in this series.

If I remember right, I did read most of these books at that YA age (I think I was around 16 or so) and I loved the angst. I felt like I read them so fast that I forgave a lot.

Enjoyed these books back in the day. Your vids have inspired me to do a reread. Funny, I remember being irked by a lot of the same things you guys mention, but still enjoying the story anyway. I guess authors don’t get everything right but we can still have fun reading what they bring to the table ☺️

Prob not going to read this (as usual I want to say. I love listening to the trio hardcore ranting about unsalvageable book like the Savior's Champion too much lmao) but I hope there would be more book like that. Not completely lighthearted but not grimdark either. If it make sense ? I dunno if I'm just unlucky, but it seem that nowadays it's either one or the other.

Late to this one because I had to go and listen to the audiobook before I came to engage, mostly because the last one was such a well-timed summary I needed that I wanted to support continuing with the series despite an inevitable dropoff. Excited to listen.

I really love john as a character, I could read about him for 400 straight pages and have a great time, but I think he's an intensely unreliable narrator. the way he tells the events shows a very sympathetic tragic fall arc, and I think that overall trajectory is probably true, but there's this bit in his last chapter in nona where his story of how the bombs went off contradicts itself, he goes from saying he detonated g---'s bomb in melbourne first to saying that the other bombs went first, and when harrow says "wait that's not what you said before" he says "what? why does it matter, I'm just going to do what I'm going to do anyway." it reads to me like that's meant to indicate he's been massaging a bunch of other details in his retelling to make himself look as blameless as possible.

If you're interested in a Tudor murder mystery try Dissolution - C J Sansom. It was recently adapted into a Sky mini series which was aggressively mid... But it's a great book for creating atmosphere, character and political drama.

So a little off topic, but I had such a hard time reading Brandon Sanderson's Tress of the Emerald Sea because I thought Tress was this really passive character because Sanderson decided to hide Tress' big planning stage of how she would escape her island. As it was presented, it felt like her dad and everyone else on the island was actively formulating a plan while Tress kinda sat there. And I totally blame Sanderson for wanting his "big reveal" of how crafty Tress actual was until after the 1/3 mark.

I have no idea why TH-cam recommended this to me, but I'm glad it did because I read this book a few years back and I *hated* the ending. It was fun to hear other people talk about how badly done it was. I remember initially being excited when Gen revealed the secret plot, expecting it to lead into the next book which was obviously going to be about these two characters who hate each other learning to see each other in a different light, but nope! We speedrun that and claim that Gen always felt a certain way even though nothing in the book actually backs up this twist. Strongly agree that this felt like it wanted to be a more adult book and ended up falling flat in a lot of ways because it couldn't be. You're also right that Turner isn't a bad writer. From what I remember, she has fun ideas and good command of character voices/individual scenes, but the lack of connective tissue between those scenes and the need for everything to be a twist combined with how messed up the ending was made me lose all interesting in reading more of the series.

If it was a comedy they wouldn't be burning down forests to dispose of bodies they would just dump them all in a California wildfire 😂

I still just cannot get over that there is a role "Queen's Thief." Does she really need so many things stolen that there is a full time employee? For his like three steals a year, cut him down to part time, so you don't have to provide benefits. lol

Also, for good Tudor-adjacent historical fiction I recommend Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

The Queen of Attolia is too cool for all these bitches. Attolia! Attolia! I hope she cuts off Gen's other body parts. That said, you know a book is competent when you can talk more about the frustrations of the characters in the book than the craft of the book itself.

When Maria said Gen knows all the secret tunnels, I randomly got a flashback of Avatar when they're in the Earth Kingdom and there's a dude singing "secret tunnel... secret tunnel" 😂

How is making a gay character evil “problematic”? Gay people can be evil.

Wasnt the kudzu not as scary but for a time just irreesponsible and careless shortsighted hyped up so much and then ledt alone , and more a sign of neglect. Which would be an interestin zombie background too, also goats.

I didn't like the tone switch from the first to second 3rd (I am somewhere around 2/3rds in the book). And it is not that I liked one or the other more, I just didn't enjoy author deciding, after hours of a "he said, she said" theatrical drama, to throw me into a fantasy adventure story. I think I would enjoy it more if there was more of this action writing earlier in the book binding two parts together at least stylistically. There were places where it could've been done - the attack on Alkuin, the murder of Delauney come to my head. We could have seen these scenes with more details, not just as dry descriptions. I would need it just in few spots, to prepare me for the fact, that the author may go on full adventure mode later on. And now I am back in the Terre d'Ange, and we seem to be back to people talking in the room. I guess congratulations to Martin, for being able to describe politics in a way that it doesn't seem separate from the action filled parts of his books. Carey didn't manage to do it. Edit - when I think about it, I kind of didn't care about the politics in this book. I liked the world building and main characters, but all these scheming lords and ladies were barely sketched out and I didn't develop any connection with them deep enough to feel invested - which is directly connected with the style of first part of the book, that depicted the culture in a fascinating way, but felt too much like a dry account of (not that unexpected) historical events (with sex).

I feel like the film should have taken more cues from District 9. But then that might have just invited comparisons to a much better film.

I sadly couldn't get past the weird sex stuff in the Shogun book, that and being intimidated by the length and density caused me to put it down a couple hundred pages in. Although it was very interesting for a while as I was reading it and if not for that I would have loved it

There's so many issues with this but also, nerve sensitization is a thing which is basically that, if you have a lot of pain regularly, your nerves get oversensitive and less pain actually aggravates them more than if they aren't often stimulated by pain so the "I'm used to the pain, I can ignore it" is actually nonsense.

For me, I’d love to see this as an anthology of short stories by authors from a range of cultures, each story being set in a different country (or a different part of the country if it’s large enough) focused on the rebuild attempts. You could style them as interviews being conducted by one interviewer to draw them all together
