Unresolved Textual Tension takes banter to the top tier. Sometimes I feel this platform was literally created with me in mind. How can the humor match mine so perfectly. I hate World War stories but I'll read it to prove that you guys are right. Friday mornings are fun again.😊

So The Bear and the Nightingale series (the official name is the Winternight trilogy) is actually a very solid historical fantasy that initially masquerades as a folklore-based fantasy. In my opinion, this approach actually fits the material very well. It is thematically justified, especially considering where and how the author chooses to end the trilogy. To me, the author is an outsider who comes the closest to capturing the “Russian spirit”, the essence of the (much mythologised) Russian consciousness. I was not surprised to learn that she spent time studying in Moscow. It really shows. And we do see quite a few of the characters from the first novel in the sequels as their fates intertwine more and more with the fate of Russia.

It's been long enough that my memory is a little skewed, but I feel like the movie, The Menu kind of illustrates what Katie is saying about food. People pretentiously eating bland mushrooms with some dry ice vapor blowing across the plate and seaweed, and going crazy over the fact that it tastes like nature, even though, in reality it probably wouldn't be a very satifying flavor. Rich people elevating a peasants miserable reality of a meal. Her analogy. Plus it's a comedy horror, so that makes it worth watching

I haven't really been able to watch your positive reviews cause often they're of books that I intend to read but I'm so glad I finally got to watch one. I so appreciate the fact that you guys were just as thorough with your discussions with this book as you are with your rants. Very insightful as always. Thanks guys.

Not you two transforming this into monster boyfriend slash smut! 🤣
For me, war stories are either really great or really bad, so I don't pick up anything in the genre unless it's a trusted recommendation. In this case, I really like the idea of introducing the devil and fantasy elements, though I'm not sure I liked what she did with it. Based on your review, she could have gone darker.
Also, I see Katie and know there will be a food comparison in the episode, so the intro was perfect!

Will I agree with your point about authors leaning too far into the "you wouldn't understand" side of the military vs civilian personification as a way to portray teen angst type vibe. For us it's more of an unspoken thing vs an outward badge of inclusiveness.
Good to hear y'all discuss books that you like :) much more substance for discussion ❤

I am very interested. I very much enjoyed The Bear and the Nightingale, but the last book in that series was quit bad, the pacing was terrible. (Still better then the last book in the cruel prince trilogy😜)

Hi guyyyyssss! I have a question, and I'll leave it here since I'm not sure where I can ask this! I've been wanting to be a part of your patreon community for quite some time. But the thing is, although I do read books in English, I'm from Spain and currently living in Argentina, so when I write, I do so in spanish. I'd love to be part of the critique and to be able to share my writing with the community, but I would like to know if there are any spanish speakers there, or if I would have to give just a main idea of the projects I'm working on, because I do consider my writing in spanish to be quite good, but my literary capabilities in english are very limited Just to know what will I face when I finally get the courage to join. Thank you all
