Can I just appreciate Maria’s cats supreme comic timing appearing over her shoulder right as you were discussing the bird micromanaging over Halla’s shoulder

I haven’t read the original book but Y’all made it so fun! Picturing Michelle Rodriguez as Sarkis being grumpy about doing yard work and then pissed when her work gets trampled is just chef’s kiss and the bird is hilarious! I vote for another rewrite and a fanfic by Katie! 🔥

I have to say that while romancing Karlach would be great, my completely unplanned, tragically doomed sapphic romance between my Seladrine drow and Shadowheart is peak.

I don’t like the name Sarkis because SCP has a cult called Sarkism and all I can think of is The Flesh that Hates walking around pretending to be human.

I don't ever plan on reading swordheart, but I would definitely read a fanfic along these lines (or even change the names and publish this as original fiction....I would totally buy the book). I loved all your ideas for it! The way noon started out with Sarkis as a man, and y'all giving up and changing him into a woman was so funny

    That was interesting.
I liked the idea in Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword where there was a good sword and an evil sword.
Could that add some drama to the midnight version? Where Hala believes Sarkis is good, but it actually turns out she was evil and her new experiences in the modern world has made her better? Like the hanged mothers had a legitimate reason to distrust magic swords and the "demons" within them?

Here is my idea with how Sarkis gets in the sword:
    ---------------------------
Sarkis’s comrades-at-arms have been ambushed by a force larger and stronger than anticipated. The shrewd call made with their generals backfired. Their flight quickly disintegrated from an orderly retreat to a chaotic rout as they are struck down. The wounded have given up any pretense of honor, crying out for their mothers’ warm embrace as they bleed out into the cold muck. (If I may borrow a baseball metaphor, it is the bottom of the ninth.) This scene is far from the hearths of their encampment the previous night, the night air filled with the hearty laughter of warriors describing their sweethearts back home. The air is now thick with smoke and the death-screams of the warriors and horses. Where is their commander? She lies in the mud, half-buried by the corpse of what was once a fellow soldier, her body rent by battle, her bones broken in the stampede, and a gaping sword-wound down her chest that foams with each gasp. The fact she is somehow still alive - much less clinging to consciousness (but just barely) - is a testament to her strength. But as she draws her last shallow, ragged breaths, Sarkis is visited by the Smith Goddess.
DO YOU WANT TO TURN THE TIDE OF THE BATTLE? The goddess asks.
“Yes,” Sarkis spits, laboring to make barely a raspy whisper through the din of battle.
WOULD YOU WANT TO SAVE YOUR COMRADES?
“Absolutely," the warrior responds without hesitation.
WHAT WOULD YOU SACRIFICE FOR IT?
    “Anything. I would give anything.”
In that moment, Sarkis feels the goddess’s presence within her. She is racked by a warp-spasm. Her every organ quaking like a tree in the tempest, quivering like a reed in the stream. Each beat of Sardis’s heart pounds a hammer blow. Her body jerks in a furious twist inside of her skin. Her gnashing teeth throw sparks like flints. Every hair is now bristly spike, every muscle is now an iron cable. Sarkis has never felt such agonizing pain and never such orgasmic ecstasy. There is a sudden flash of divine light before her eyes just before she blacks out.
When she comes to, Sarkis is on a hilltop, skin covered with dried blood. It is not hers. She arises to survey the battlefield. There is nothing alive in a league radius around her, not even a single blade of grass. The tree trunks are charred. Nothing green remains-only gray shades of soot & ash. As the last smolders go out, the reek of smoke has subsided as the stench of rot begins to replace it. Encircling the battlefield is a chest-high wall of the enemy’s corpses, their blood and gore pooling into the ashes in black-red clots. The ravens have just arrived to pick at eyes and entrails of the fallen. They will eat heartily for weeks. But Sarkis had changed. She feels the deep wound down her chest - now the fuller of a blade. In that moment of weakness, she gave into the Smith Goddess’s experimentations and became one with the sword. Instead of courageously dying a warrior’s death in battle, she gave up that opportunity in cowardice to live forever, never again having that opportunity to die with honor, to forever live in dishonor. Now, Sarkis will perpetually be used as a mere tool for war, a weapon used by bloodthirsty men to achieve their own violent aspirations. She no longer has the freedom to choose her own fate; she is now a mere object to be used, coveted, and fought over by others. She will never again hold hands with her cherished; the only touch she will know is the firm clench of a mailed fist. She could never again caress the face of her beloved; even her gentlest touch could draw blood. She could never embrace their lover, curling into them to share the warmth of their skin on a cold night; her body is now cold, rigid, adamantine steel. Sarkis would fight in more battles than any warrior could in a hundred lifetimes, Turn the tide in more battles than anyone could name, cause the rise and fall of kingdoms, but at the cost of everything.
    ---------------------------
I thought it would be interesting to see the transformation as something of a narrative way of describing "living by the sword, dying by the sword." Something I enjoy from Marina Warner's works on fairy tales is that she points out the element of transformation - things looking one way but being something else - is a defining element of the fairy tale. It would be interesting to use the becoming a sword - a weapon of war - to suggest other things. I also thought a reference to Cú Chulainn's ríastrad in the Táin would be fitting here. The transformation is something I wanted to leave ambiguous as whether it is a curse or a blessing; on one hand, Sarkis is now arguably the greatest warrior in history & is able to survive and win the battle; on the other, Sarkis has given up all personhood, connection with others, and honor. I would want to set up the arc of Sarkis regaining her humanity, learning to connect with others again, and find new meaning in her life. Also, I wanted to try and make the situation ambiguous; does Sarkis really consent to becoming a sword? I enjoy the Smith Goddess's "mad scientist" element discussed here, and wanted to try and make it clear the Smith Goddess does not care who wins or loses but who can be a good test subject that technically agrees with the process. I want to deny the audience delighting in the "glory of battle," only finding the resulting loss and destruction, pain and carnage. I know Will, Katie, and Marie will probably find this passage subpar. (I do not blame them.)
