เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 ธ.ค. 2020
Jon's Motorcycle Rescue and Review was born out of my passion for motorcycles. I love riding, reviewing, buying, servicing, restoring, and improving all types of motorcycles. I am especially fond of mid 1970's through mid 1980's Japanese motorcycles. My goal is to share my experiences with the motorcycles and the products used in their restoration and improvement.
Suzuki Hayabusa Vs Honda Blackbird Vs Yamaha FJ1200!
In this fun acceleration comparison video, I'm testing four big-bore sportbikes. It's Suzuki's 2006 GSX-1300R Hayabusa vs Honda's 1999 & 2003 CBR1100XX Blackbirds vs the winner of the last classic motorcycle acceleration test, Yamaha's 1986 FJ1200. I'll be showing some acceleration runs and doing a timed 40-80 mph top-gear roll-on test on each bike. Which bike is the quickest? The results may surprise you - let's find out together!

World's Fastest Motorcycle! Suzuki Gen 1 Hayabusa Review 1999-2007
มุมมอง 5Kวันที่ผ่านมา
I'm super excited about this weeks road test review video! Thank you Krit for providing the review motorcycle! This time, I'm reviewing Suzuki's gen 1 GSX-1300R Hayabusa. When introduced in 1999, the Hayabusa was an incredible 15 mph faster than the previous king of speed, Honda's CBR1100XX Blackbird (which only outpaced the Kawasaki ZX-11 by a single mph)! In fact, the Busa was so fast that go...

There were two CBXs, two 1983 CB1100Fs, a 1969 CB750, a 1980 CB750F, and a 1981 CB900F. All of the bikes were in beautiful cosmetic condition. The owner gracious...
Kawasaki ZL900 Eliminator Review - Best Muscle Cruiser?

The 1986-1986 900 Eliminator was Kawasaki's competitor in the mid-eighties "muscle bike" scene which also featured the V65 Magna from Honda, the Suzuki Madura 1200, and Yamahas V-Max. I've owned all of these muscle cruisers over the years and thought it would be fun to talk about how they compare to each other in this Eliminator review video. I'll also give the history of the Eliminator, we'll ...

Loved my '89 FJ1200. They are only 5 speeds as well. Still fun bikes.
Love my Blackbird . I'm 70 next week and it still brings a grin to my face every time I wind her up . Till death do us part .
Right on! The Blackbirds is a fantastic machine!
Does a high windshield stop airflow near helmet ? Does it worst it or not ? NIce sound btw
That's a great question! Depending on your height and the height/shape of the windshield, a taller screen can make things better or worse in regard to airflow near your helmet. The taller screen on this Blackbird gave improved wind protection at speed but it didn't increase wind noise for me. However, I'm tall at 6'-4". I hope that helps. Cheers!
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Thank you very much drive safe
Oh god adjust and lubricate the chains, enough is enough
?
Thanks Jon. The FJ1200 is so much fun. I've got about 3500 kms on my 1990 since rebuilding it to stock form. Do you have any experience with bar risers on FJ1200? I'm about 6' and find a long ride a bit wearing on my shoulders and back but then I am almost 60.
You're welcome, John. I haven't experimented with any bar risers on my FJ. At 6'-4", legroom is the limiting factor for me on the FJ. Cheers!
Bs zx14 has the fastest 1/4 mile time quarter mile king
When I get the chance to review a ZX-14, I'll feature the results in a video. Besides, this video wasn't about 1/4 mile times. Cheers!
I had one in 1987 it was great !
Very Cool!
Great video. I've been looking to purchase one. I first noticed it as driven by the character Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead. It was later in the series when he lost the chopper and pieced together the Nighthawk from random parts from someone at Alexandria - it fit the story. I read an article about it. They made 3 identical bikes. The gas tank is from a Yamaha, I believe. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome. I didn't know the Nighthawk was featured in that series. Cheers!
Given a choice of these bikes new I'd take the Yamaha mainly for upright comfort. If I were still 20-30 years old it would be the Blackbird, comfort aside and it looks the best.
Right on!
It is in beautiful shape!
Right on!
Nice video. i miss the eighties bikes
Thanks!
had a 1980 honda cb900c in the day, but it was blue, i loved the way it leans into turns, i wish i had it again cost me 3000 dollars new
Very cool, Glenn! The CB900C is a good-handling machine. Cheers!
vtr250 , best 250 ever

I dont understand why anyone does a 40-80 top gear roll on test. In 50 years of riding I have never accelerated from 40mph in top gear. Why would anyone do that? At that speed I am in 1st gear. That is what a gearbox is for. You might as well test to see which bike will pull away in 4th gear as it is just as irrelevant.
Respectfully, a bike that does well in this test will do well in whatever gear and speed you choose in most street riding situations. It's a great test of low to midrange power in the rpm range most people use on the street (2500rpm-6000rpm), it's repeatable, and it's non destructive to the engine/transmission. This is important when I'm testing someone else's bike. The 40-80 test is also a great indicator of the corner exit ability of a bike in real-world riding. Additionally, as with any test, the results can be judged by whether they consistently reflect reality. With few exceptions, the quicker/faster bikes post the best 40-80 times. Cheers!
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I guess sir that we are very different riders. I am not concerned with MPG and my engines last well however I always run in low gears and high revs. Still, motorcyling is a broad church. Ride safe my friend.⁹⁸
@@MichaelZZRriderthis is about consistency in testing methodology between bikes, how much relevance it has to 'real world' riding (and your particular preferences) is immaterial. There are plenty of full reviews in road riding conditions out there, this is something different.
@@MichaelZZRrider You, too. Cheers!
i want a touring bike to upgrade from my tinny and awesome sv650 that unfortunately became uncomfortable to ride for long distances. My picks would be either Vstrom 650/1000 because they got good seating position and CBF1000/Bandit 1250 because of big torque numbers and smoothness of inline 4. Honestly idk what to choose, i already barred out the heavy touring bikes like FJR1300/ST1300/RT1200/GTR1400 because they're way too heavy for me and metric cruisers because they're very expensive and lack a lot of equipment and they're underpowered for how heavy they are.
Right on! Thankfully, there are currently lots of bikes that will be good choices. The 1250 Bandit is great for taller riders who want performance and a relaxed feel. The Ninja 1000 is a good choice if you're not as tall and you want a more aggressive feel. The V-Stroms are a good choice if you're taller and looking for an adventure-style bike. Also in that category are the FJ-09, Versys 650/1000, Africa Twin, etc. - lots of great choices! Good luck!
I'll bet many, who are not familiar with the model, are surprised that a bike from 1986 would be so competitive in this comparison. It all comes down to the fact that these bikes are road bikes, not race bikes. The opportunities to go 150 to 180 mph are pretty much non-existent except on an autobahn. Top speed is basically irrelevant, so it all comes down to how much fun it is to ride a motorcycle, and for how long. In that light, an FJ1200 is an all day, everyday, absolute hoot to ride. Still completely relevant 30+ years down the line. So very simple, yet excellent.
Right on! You bring up some great points. My frustration with many/most modern performance bikes is that they are simply too good/competent/fast for road use and it frustrates me to feel so confined by silly rules (like speed limits) when I'm on such capable machines. Cheers!
What a great video! Our friends touring group currently has: Concours 1400 x 2, FJR 1300, K1200Gt (newer model), I feel the ST1300 is the only legendary 4 cylinder sport tourer we are missing! So this video was excellent to inform me about the bike. We often swap bikes for a hundred kilometers ir so to appreciate the different styles in these bikes. My 2 cents are as follows: FJR - the best all rounder when reliability and maintenance intervals is considered Concours 1400- the sportiest of the bunch, but lacking in creature comfort, and geared fairly long. K1200GT - the king in my opinion (as its my bike LOL) but not when maintenance intervals are conaidered. K1200GT has best seat, creature comforts and seemingly power, though it buzzes slightly in the handlebars when compared to the concours. Could compare these bikes for days as its good fun. Happy riding all.
Right on! Thanks for sharing your experiences with the other Sport-Tourers. If you're in the Lancaster/Harrisburg PA area, let me know. I'd love to review the BMW and you could try out the ST1300. Cheers!
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 would if I could but I'm from New Zealand! Good luck on finding a k1200GT/k1300GT, it seems they're plentiful over in the UK. Quite rare here in NZ.
@@metal2metallica Right on! I'd love to visit NZ someday. I've owned the sporty versions of the K1200 & K1300 previously. They're great bikes, but as you said, the maintenance costs are higher. Cheers!
Bought a new 1982 LTD 1000 off the showroom floor in Canton, Ohio for $4300. 3 speeding tickets in three months and lost my license for 6 months. Had to buy a Harley to slow me down. Sold the LTD to my brother. Loved that bike...
Right on, thanks for sharing your LTD memories! Cheers!
It's not a comparison we're talkin 3 years evolution. Suzuki was great just an amazing machine I enjoyed the heck out of mine. 8 years later people would ask me if it was a new bike I kept it mint
That's why "Evolution of the Superbike" is in the video title 😉. Both bikes are great fun to ride in their own ways. Cheers!
I record my acceleration on VBOX data logger my 2016 ZX14R (1441) with remap covers 40 to 80 in 6th takes 5.73 secs My tuned 1441 High compression with gas flowed head and higher duration camshafts on Gen2 Hayabusa takes 5.4 secs 214hp and 128 lbft I love big capacity bikes the above two I own are almost last of the old school Interesting video thanks
Right on! Those are some very impressive numbers!
😢The Special was not as good in the twisties as the normal 1.1 The extended "chopper" raked forks ensured it was a cruiser or straight line speed If i remember, the Special had same gearing but with a 16" rear whereas the 1.1 had a 17" rear, this would contribute to the taller gearing. The 17" wheel was a direct swap.
Right on! I have subsequently replaced the tires on the XS1100 Special and it drastically improved the handling. It would be a fun comparison to ride the Standard and Special versions of the XS1100 back-to-back. Cheers!
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I replaced my rear shocks on my 1.1 with Marzocchi .....best move i could ever make Pirelli tyre at the back gave much more confidence In front i added some extra cc fork oil above std recommendation and if i remember it was 25% but i may be wrong (1980 is a long time ago and i am almost 70) I uprated to Dunlop (?) Sintered racing disc pads that helped with braking The 1.1 racing boffins in South Africa gave me some tips to riding the shaftie fast and its to get off the traditional clipping the apex riding, but staying outside on trailing front brake to keep front down then getting on throttle from wide to inside and you can carry more speed as you are already down in the lean and the raising suspension with the rider weight forwards will raise the rear but weight and front break keeps front tucked and you can exit on the inside of the corner instead of outside- apex- outside, you would be outside- inside further apex- inside and you will be on the throttle sooner and harder Just an unexpected move that the rider with chain drive in front expects you to follow his line but switching it puts you on more power on his inside because your lean angle is more entering but shorter duration and upright way before the outside line The handling of modern day bikes with a 1980's bike will bury you now because they are just so good compared to then My last bike was a heavily modified BKing that ran 316 top and 9,61 @239 in the 1/4 and the 80's bikes are no match for that brutality. And yes, i was 64yo on that piece of insanity.......
The 1.1 used a 120 x17 rear with a 3,25 x19 front, my BKing used a 120 front and a 190 rear Massive difference in tyre Bking had better tyre in front than the 1.1 at the back I modded the 1.1 with it giving 130/135 hp on the back wheel on dyno at 1800m amsl, so it was a monster with many trick parts and revved to 11,000 Ran top speed run on the shaftie at 279kmh Sketch First run i had at 240 it started to weave in the front. After speaking to the racing guys they said factory recommended tyre pressure was too low for that speeds, to pump rear 2,3 bar and front at 3,2 bar. The rear had rim locks but the front not and the skinny would "grow" at spead and start to move on the rim. By going to 3,2bar front it took away the weave like magic and i could keep it pinned to run the 279 We built a second 1.1 with nitreous and ran 303 top. That was a yellow and black faired bike also with a Basani 4:1
We also cut 1 coil off the springs on the carbs so that the bike was manageable at lower rpm because the springs are "harder" (ie, same force to compress but over less distance) but at about 6-7,000 they would bang open and change the nature of the beast to sort of on-off throttle Get a spare set of springs before you go this route to ever cut them, you may not like it.
I can tell you stories of those bikes, reliability was impeccable and never let me down and sold the first one that was modded with over 185,000 km on it, no oil leaks, no trouble, just regular service and mainttenance. I really miss mine.
Had 4 Yammie 1100 shafties, 1st one out the crate. Also the blue FJ1200 and the maroon FJR1300. Miss all of them
They are great machines!
Man, where can I pick up a Blackbird for cheap? (get it?... cheep?...sorry) What a hotrod. I've ridden/ piloted a friend's bike years ago and was sold. He's gone now and I haven't seen another one since. The Suzuki is very cool but the Honda felt better to me. They're both exellent, wày fast and worthy of comparison. Thanks for sharing, J. Michigan
Thanks, James! The 1999 Blackbird in this test felt especially aggressive - it would get me in TROUBLE! Blackbirds do come up for sale every now and then if you keep your eyes open for one. Good luck!
Good thing that Suzuki limited the Hayabusa to 186mph,anything above that in a crash and you're in trouble!!😂😂😂
Right???!!! I find it comical that street riders want to de-restrict their bikes to remove that limiter. Cheers!
It’s so good to see an old school FJ1200 here, and doing so well! The quickest bike in my collection of bikes would be my 2001 ZX12R.. I don’t know if it’d be quicker than the Busa 40-80, but it’s quick enough for me 😊 Good video 👍🏼
Right on! I would love to review a nice ZX-12R on this channel if I get the chance. It's one of the few bikes I haven't gotten to ride. Like the other bikes in this test, I'm sure it's overkill for street use and difficult to be good on! Cheers!
Incredible the busa can overcome the gearing. The old 1100 plus in a pristine condition could be nasty cause to the gearing. But offcause in a very limited speed range.
Right on!
Thanks for the post, had an '86 FJ1200 back in the day, lovely bike. Then two Hayabusa's . An '06 second hand followed by a new Gen 2 'Busa in 2015. Done over 75000kms on the Hayabusa. Never owned a Blackbird , never ridden one to be honest. Always liked them. Best bike in my shed now is an '18 ZX14R. I won't buy another 'Busa.
Both the ZX14R and a modified Hayabusa are great bikes , busa needs more mods to match the ZX14R
Right on! You've owned some serious street hardware! Cheers!
Happy to have any of those in my garage.
Right on!
Wish I had my '97 'bird back, commuted on it for 7 years, just an effortless world beater!
Right on, they're great bikes!
My brother had a '78 GS1000, thought it was ugly. But whoa, did it ride. Handled like butter, could spin back tire, no helmet law, ate some bugs. Filed the nightstand down on the corners, I was bit too young to know better. Some wild memories on than bike.
So cool! Thanks for sharing your GS memories, and I'm glad you're still here!
UK bike magazine Performance Bikes did a top gear roll-on test of about 15 bog stock bikes, around 2005-06, and the bike which beat all the others in the 50-100 mph roll on's was the 1050cc Triumph Speed Triple.
@uhtred7860. I bet they never saw that coming . 😂
I loved those! What a fantastic motor. Cheers!
I agree completely with your review. The summer of 2024, I returned from from S. Korea to Michigan for my brothers funeral. He had this 2006 ST1300 and it was his 'baby.' I rode it daily for the 2 weeks while back in Michigan. This ST is a GREAT bike!! I'm 5'7" and had zero problems riding this bike. Although it is a "big" bike and I had to plan my moves in the driveway/ garage, it was easily doable as it's something I've always had to deal with being short. The ST doesn't ride like a big bike, it feels much smaller while moving. Honda did a great job! I know my brother installed different heavier fork springs and played with the oil wt./ levels a little, but it was great when I was on it. Sorry, I don't know what springs he installed, but I remember him complaining about the soft front prior to the upgrades. In my 55 years, I've owned a couple dozen road bikes (Harley, all the Japanese brands, Aprilia, ...) and even raced a couple of them for a while. This is the most tour leaning bike I spent a lot of time on and I was IMPRESSED. I know when I finish my time here in Korea, I'll have that ST1300 waiting for me to tour America and I am excited about doing it on his ST. (ps. I also owned a 84' V65 Sabre when in high school in 87')
Thanks for sharing your ST1300 experiences! I can't believe you owned the V-65 Sabre in high school - that was an impressive performance machine! The ST1300 reminds me of the somewhat of the Sabre. Both great bikes! Cheers!
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I bought that V-65 while in HS (and through Uni.) from this same brother as the above comment. I was racing MX for years at that time. You put a fearless 135lbs. kid on that bike that knows how to get off the line and bang gears..... UNSTOPPABLE for the first couple of gears. It's been many many years and a lot of bikes between the V-65 and ST, but I don't remember that V-65 handling very well. I'd give the handling to the ST as I just drove it and wasn't disappointed at all. I say the V-65 had the raw power and straight line speed. I do wish that V-65 was still around, BUT happy happy happy that I have my brothers ST1300 waiting for me when I return 'home' because it's a better bike.... and it has sentimental value. Thanks again for your quality review.

Great comparison Jon. Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
why no kwakasaki ZX9
Only because I haven't had the chance to review one. I would love to feature any/all of the ZX-9R models on this channel when I get the chance. I've owned every generation of ZX-9R and they're among my favorite sportbikes. Cheers!
I like the Blackbird. Sounds great to me and I don’t have to be at the head of the pack.
Right on!
Interesting video, I knew the blackbird is not gonna do well here due to the relatively peaky motor and very long 6th gear. 40 is way under its poweband, it starts pulling at 6k rpm. I am sure the busa would outperform it in any test though.
Yes, the Busa is the overachiever in this test, though the 1999 did very well in this test and has much more "pull" from lower RPM than the later 2003 Blackbird. I think the 1999 Blackbird has more low-end than the carbureted Blackbirds as well. I've owned two all-stock 1997 Blackbirds and they didn't hit until around 6k rpm (similar feel to the 2003). Cheers!
The exhaust difference does make a difference! A fair comparison they should both be bone stock or share the same upgrades
The results would be the same. The Suzuki already made more power and was quicker revving in stock form. The Suzuki also has the benefit of CV type carbs. Other than the exhaust, both bikes received the same mods - Progressive fork springs, Spiegler steel-braided brake lines, Emgo Magna Wide handlebar, same tires, etc. The Suzuki holds all the cards in this test - better handling, longer range, smoother gearbox, less driveline lash, better seat/ergonomics, and more power. With that said, both bikes have proven themselves to be quite reliable and either would be a great choice if you only had one bike in the garage. Cheers!
I have a 2009 1250S daily driver and a 2011 1250 S that is beoming a chopper. Both are great bikes.

That was a nice mixture of bikes and it was interesting to see which was quicker in a 40-80 top gear situation. That is what I like about big bore bikes, if I'm just cruising I can easily dip into a freeway entrance ramp at 40 and accelerate to 80 without needing to downshift or pass someone driving 40 in a 50 zone without downshifting. I'm a little lazy sometimes 😅. I ownd a 92 FJ, and I have ridden both 2nd and 3rd gen Busa's. All great bikes. My buddie with the 3rd gen Busa used to own a Blackbird and he says loved it. I have a 21 Gixxer 1KR now. Playing in 3rd and 4th gear on the highway gives me good punch without unintentional wheelies!😅. I subscribed. Great video, it brought back good memories 😀
Thanks Garvin! You gotta love the big-bore bikes for lazy power and the pure insanity when you open them up! Thanks for the subscription. Cheers!
Black bird all the way, no doubt my choice

Owned em all and found the FJ1200 to be the best balanced with a great long distance capability. Thank you!

Nice review, Personally speaking the last decent Blackbird was the '98 before the switched from Carbs to the Fuel Injection system, have ridden both but when i got back into riding after around a 20 year break (now 60 years old and still have the '98 in the garage) I hunted for a 98 Model rather than the 99. FJ1200 an awesome bike loved mine, like the 1100xx was aimed at sports touring market. Due to a shoulder / vertebrae issue am doing the "VFR mod" to the Birds handlebars to bring them up from the bunny rabbit race sitting positon rather than the leaning forward one, but thats bcs of age nothing else, Took a mates Busa out. Nice bike but no where near as comfortable as a Blackbord or the FJ on long distance trip or where there are a lot of twisties. Fun fact: Hayabusa (隼?) is Japanese for "peregrine falcon", a bird that often serves as a metaphor for speed due to its vertical hunting dive, or stoop, speed of 180 to 202 miles per hour (290 to 325 km/h), the fastest of any bird. In particular, the choice of name was made because the peregrine falcon preys on blackbirds, which reflected the intent of the original Hayabusa to unseat the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird as the world's fastest production motorcycle. Eventually, the Hayabusa managed to surpass the Super Blackbird by around 10 MPH only despite the larger engine displacement and gearing.
@@TomEagles Right on! Thanks for sharing the insights. Cheers!
Great, fun, but informative video Jon 👍🏻 Top gear roll ons are very telling for real world feel of the engine.
@@nickrider5220 Thanks for the feedback, Nick!
Excellent test, enjoyed that level on Sega hang on. That's why I went from an '86 FJ1200 to a '99 1450 Harley low rider. The complaints department would say it's unfair because it's geared for around 130. See Hildo's Harley and get triggered about how you would have won on a busa. It's just not how the real world works. Vfr750fj from 1988 is still stupid quick on a ¼ mile from a standing start. Keep up the good work.
@@theodavies8754 Thanks, Theo!
'99 Blackbird owner, and former FJ owner as well. I'm not sure that a pull from 40mph in top gear is going to be of too much utility, as I'm certain I've never had my Blackbird in top gear at that low a road speed despite it's wonderfully useable midrange power. Pulling 40-80 is good, just, I know it'd never happen on a bike like this. I'd also wonder that the loud mufflers could be afflicting the Bird's result. Conventional wisdom suggests this type of muffler typically will reduce midrange power. Not that a Bird's ever going to out-pull a Busa, there's too much difference in displacement and power for that to happen. No surprise about the FJ, though, and the low gearing was the first thing I thought of when I saw the video pop up. I liked mine very well back in the early '90s and put nearly 50,000 miles on it, right up until I got a Kawasaki ZX1100E (GPZ) which was way faster and vastly smoother; much better for the touring side. But the FJ was indeed pretty sensational back in the day and if it was that one of these was the only bike I could get to ride, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Still a fine machine.
@@FieldShunt Right on! Thanks for sharing your experiences with these great machines. Cheers!
Jon, what would be of great value, if you could find or borrow an Fj that has had a 17 inch wheel swapp front and rear, and tell your viewers if the changes are worth doing?
@robertrodriguez8167 Right on! I know Yamaha had converted it to 17" wheels front and back by 1990 along with brake upgrades. It would be fun to do a back-to-back comparison between both versions. Cheers!
I had both an fj and a busa. This is not accurate to put a bike that’s geared for 150 mph and one that is geared for 186 mph in a top gear roll on. Even though the busa won I can confirm that the busa feels twice the bike of the fj. It’s a world apart.
@MrH250 This test illustrates top-gear passing power of bikes from different eras. All these bikes are big-bore, street-oriented sportbikes that were geared for top-speed when they were introduced. One ride will confirm what you're saying, that even the Blackbirds are in another league from the FJ once you exit the legal speed arena. Cheers!
oops: Lt.Col. George.........USMC. VMFT-401
Our Skipper, Lt.Col.Geoger has one of those Hayabusa's...I think it's an '03........pretty bike, I've got my old '81 XS1100H...... but it's very well enough for me at 61 years old.
