I agree completely with your review. The summer of 2024, I returned from from S. Korea to Michigan for my brothers funeral. He had this 2006 ST1300 and it was his 'baby.' I rode it daily for the 2 weeks while back in Michigan. This ST is a GREAT bike!! I'm 5'7" and had zero problems riding this bike. Although it is a "big" bike and I had to plan my moves in the driveway/ garage, it was easily doable as it's something I've always had to deal with being short. The ST doesn't ride like a big bike, it feels much smaller while moving. Honda did a great job! I know my brother installed different heavier fork springs and played with the oil wt./ levels a little, but it was great when I was on it. Sorry, I don't know what springs he installed, but I remember him complaining about the soft front prior to the upgrades. In my 55 years, I've owned a couple dozen road bikes (Harley, all the Japanese brands, Aprilia, ...) and even raced a couple of them for a while. This is the most tour leaning bike I spent a lot of time on and I was IMPRESSED. I know when I finish my time here in Korea, I'll have that ST1300 waiting for me to tour America and I am excited about doing it on his ST. (ps. I also owned a 84' V65 Sabre when in high school in 87')

@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I bought that V-65 while in HS (and through Uni.) from this same brother as the above comment. I was racing MX for years at that time. You put a fearless 135lbs. kid on that bike that knows how to get off the line and bang gears..... UNSTOPPABLE for the first couple of gears. It's been many many years and a lot of bikes between the V-65 and ST, but I don't remember that V-65 handling very well. I'd give the handling to the ST as I just drove it and wasn't disappointed at all. I say the V-65 had the raw power and straight line speed. I do wish that V-65 was still around, BUT happy happy happy that I have my brothers ST1300 waiting for me when I return 'home' because it's a better bike.... and it has sentimental value. I do own a ST 1300, 2013 and your review is spot on. I did ride a RT1200 R (1998 model) for 10 years. It had a full electric windscreen and ABS back then. Beat that!. Best motorcycle ever ( in my view). The ST is what could be seen as the Honda version of the RT. In fact several features ( the windshield, the mirrors, the great wind protection, the low weight and great handling are all very similar. I do live in the country side far from any BMW dealers. So the ST1300 became my best bet, and I'm very happy with it.
Right on! I'm also an RT fan. I rode my ST1300 yesterday for about 100 miles and loved every minute of it. One area where the RT can't compete with the ST is in engine output. That V-4 Honda motor is a gem. Cheers!
What a great video! Our friends touring group currently has: Concours 1400 x 2, FJR 1300, K1200Gt (newer model), I feel the ST1300 is the only legendary 4 cylinder sport tourer we are missing! So this video was excellent to inform me about the bike. We often swap bikes for a hundred kilometers ir so to appreciate the different styles in these bikes. My 2 cents are as follows: FJR - the best all rounder when reliability and maintenance intervals is considered Concours 1400- the sportiest of the bunch, but lacking in creature comfort, and geared fairly long. K1200GT - the king in my opinion (as its my bike LOL) but not when maintenance intervals are conaidered. K1200GT has best seat, creature comforts and seemingly power, though it buzzes slightly in the handlebars when compared to the concours. Could compare these bikes for days as its good fun. @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I also own a K1300S.. it's my medium range hyper tourer. Do 90 percent of the work myself, once you know the bikes the work isn't so bad! Can't beat the Japanese bikes for reliability! NZ is all I know, but I'd suggest the south island is certainly worth visiting, especially for a motorbike trip!

Absolutely fantastic job. I really enjoyed the technical spin of your review. I’ve had a ST1300 police edition with ABS for 2 years and have to admit that you summed up the bike very well. I added a gel insert in the stock seat and throw a sheepskin on there for those long touring days, and that made a world of difference. I’m an old guy and could actually walk upright after being in the saddle for 8-9 hours. I did find a tip on the web about reducing the engine heat by installing car type air vents in the lower fairing. On those hot days you open the vents and direct the heat away from your legs. Something I am planning to try next riding season. One additional con to add is the stock headlights. They’re OK, but I swapped them out for a set of LED lights and it’s much better. The ST is not as sporty or powerful as the fjr or concours, but the torque is amazing and it handles wonderfully at high and low speeds. The seating position, comfort and excellent fuel range make it a remarkable touring bike. Other than chewing up rear tires as you mentioned, the bike is pretty low maintenance.
@Youk709 Right on, thanks! I always appreciate feedback from owners of the bikes I review. I drastically improved the warm day ride comfort by simply removing the windshield. I gave up the bikes 20 years ago when I had young children, I always wanted a Pan, so when I decided to get a bike this year I got one. I love it, great to ride and very comfortable. The weight when moving at walking pace (e.g. in a car park) took some getting used to though. Great review.
Uk owner . Great review I absolutely love my bike , and there great value for money here in the UK, you can pick them up for £2000 now thats alot of bike for the money, which are really reliable. Soon as you ride one you know its quality.
Any major maintenance done yet? if so, would you mind sharing the cost of the maintenance? I see several options locally that are +/- 100K miles, the prices are tempting, just wondering if I should be looking to do any major maintenance soon if I buy a high milage one.
@someone46018 The ST1300 was an expensive bike originally. Because of the full fairing and some complexity (the linked brakes, for example), they aren't cheap to own if you have someone else service them. I wouldn't buy a high-mileage example unless you are planning to perform most services on your own. Good luck in your search!
One of the reasons some riders would prefer the FJR 1300 is the weight difference , small and mid- size riders really appreciate the lesser weight ; and the smaller visual bulk of the Yamaha .
@straightchad8059 The FJR is more compact and probably a better fit for some riders (as you point out). And the looks are subjective as well. Both are nice bikes. Cheers!
I had to thin the heard and decided to get rid of the FJR and keep the ST. FJR had more power, quicker, six speed, cruise, but felt top heavy & buzzy in the handle bars. ST1300 I just like better it’s my commuter bike. Except on hot days…
@sparkypdx I simply removed the windshield from the ST1300, and now it's completely rideable (and quieter) on warm days. I'll put it back on when the weather cools. Try it, you'll like it. Cheers!

@user-sh5dy5tr9d Thanks for the feedback, Eric! As a post script, since filming the review, I have put 750+ additional miles on the ST1300. Those miles include aggressive sport riding, touring, etc. I can honestly say I like it even more now. I even found a solution for the heat and wind noise - I just removed the windshield. The change is transformative, and I can now ride in 80+ degree heat in comfort. I'm a fan!
On pans and still ride both the 11 and the 13 ,for the last 23 years ,have been all over Europe, on both ,and to this day I cannot fault them ,for me the tyres and psi ,and fork oil is crucial ,I love them .sometimes people get to technical ,and I have always serviced all my hondas /pans ,if I don't know what's involved ,I go and find out ,these bikes are bullet proof ,but for me the 1100 is the business ,haven't enough time to explain the suttle differences ,no tech on my 11 ,so you use your skills ,I prefare the 11 ,hands down ,even though I have both currently ,4 pans under the belt,
This motorcycle was built for Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is very heavy and it is the hardest to drive it in first gear. When a certain angle is turned to the left or right, it is difficult to correct it. You must be a very strong man. Mine fell off a few times at 1 mph when I was revving it in a parking lot. Only auxiliary wheels can help here, which I really don't want to put on. Another big problem is instability at speeds above 100 mph. No one can solve these two problems. Regardless of everything, I love this motorcycle.
In 2011 Washington state patrol switched to the 1300 from a BMW and it was stated as more manuverable ,better acceleration and smoother at speed and lower maintenance cost and they are still in service today.
Paul speaking of WSP in the last 30 days two of them were auctioned off. 1st one went for over 7K & i did not log back in to see what the other one went for, probably the same because the same people were bidding on them. These two must of gotten lost in the system because instead of the usual 70K+ miles they where like 5K and I believe they where 2016 models I was temped… But who knows how high that 2nd one should go for
I traded a 98 Blackbird in for my new 06 ST IN 08. Still had leftovers. Did enjoy the hard bags, more comfort, etc. Is a heavy bike, but disappears when moving. I got 116 RWHP at a dyno day. The all over torque is great. It IS a maint. intensive bike. Jon still has to experience the brake flush. I put some 60k miles on mine, the valves never moved with 2 or 3 checks...A good thing! A TB sync. goes a long way to cool off the heat coming onto you. Removing most of the inner fairing does the rest. Hard to believe but this thing will wheelie easily with all that torque, even at that weight. The fuel range is crazy with the 2 tanks. Also wheelies much easier when top tank is empty. I still miss the liter+ class power but am getting used to it. Love the lightness, simplicity, no maint. valves, etc. of my 92 750 Nighthawk now.
@petev.9357 Right on, Pete! I've now completed the brake fluid flush, mounted new tires, etc. I still need to check off a few maintenance items, but I am racking up the miles and enjoying every one. I spent yesterday doing some fairly aggressive sport riding and was pleasantly surprised. I hope to have this one in the garage for a while. Cheers!
Jon, I've owned an FJR, back a few years ago, it was a CHANGING experience. The power was incredible, the gas mileage was incredible, the bike itself was something that I needed to relearn how to ride. My "Bikes" are like yours, CB900C, and now more recently an '81 Yami XS1100H......... powerful in it's own right, however that FJR w/ 143 was in a different league. I've sold the FJR after owning it over a year and putting on over 1000 mi. on it. Not my cup of tea. I'll stay with the 70's/'80's UJM's!
@marcelgaud Interesting. For myself, I find that many modern bikes lack anything that really draws me in. They can feel capable but sterile. I don't feel that way about the ST1300. What didn't you like about the FJR - why did you sell it?

I did have to add "risers" that put the bars up and back , so that an old man like me riding wasn't a bother, the "SPORT" thing isn't good over a certain age. That made the bike "Doable" to go to Phoenix and back in the same day, with riding in between, about 500 mile day. No soreness. The "rack" on the back of the bike is pretty useless on the newer bikes, they're only made for holding bolted on trunks. The old UJM's had 13" wide racks, that you can hold a fully loaded SEA BAG, from boot camp, completely filled, 100lbs/ 3' high (wide), when strapped down. The new bikes, uh , uh, you're NOT going to be able to load up that Honda, or that FJR like that. PERIOD! UMJ's...... you could OVER LOAD the hell out of them and still ride 800 miles per trip "SAFELY"

I just moved from Latin-American to Spain, I'm looking for a touring bike to travel the country with my wife. So far I have this bike and the BMW K1200 as the possible options, the cost is similar; what I like about this Honda is that it is considerably lighter and nimbler than the BMW, also has a better reliability reputation, but the extra comfort and reverse gear on the BMW is tempting.
@someone46018 My wife enjoys riding the ST1300 with me. The K1200s are dirt cheap here, but they often have issues that are prohibitively expensive to fix. Maybe they are less expensive to have fixed in Europe, but I would steer clear based on my experience owning many BMWs (including the K1200). Cheers!

Just an FYI, the non ABS model has the same power/electrical adjustable windshield I have a 2008 non-ABS in red...great review and bike...my wifes NT700 deauville (the ST1300 baby brother with a v twin) has the non powered adjustable windshield...
Enjoyed the video. My dad had an ST1100 for a long time and I rode it a lot. Do you know who built the seat on yours? Day long or bill Mayer maybe? Looks like about 3 inches higher than stock.

Honda's ST1100/1300 is a great bike, no doubt but the FJR1300, especially the 2013 gen and up, wins hands down. The FJR has been in constant development since 2003, with each generation getting better and better and nothing beats cruise control. The aftermarket offers tons of support too, as well as a community that knows every centimeter of the bike.
@@leviefrauim1425 No doubt the FJR1300 is a great bike. I've had the 5-speed and 6-speed versions. Electronic cruise is a big plus (as you mention). I still prefer the smoothness and power delivery of the Honda V-4 as well as the roomier ergonomics and easy handling of the ST1300. I would be happy to have either one in the garage. Cheers!
That '04 FJR from Phoenix to Yuma, Az, got me 59mpg. My XS1100H gets about 36mpg. 6.6 gal. tank on the FJR/ 6.3, on the XS1100H model. (one gal. more than the normal XS1100)
I have had my st1300 for about 4 months. It’s a fantastic machine for sport and touring. One thing I have noticed is the roughness when I’m on the highway. The “dirty” air especially semis and bigger trucks makes my bike uneasy. I haven’t found a cause yet. I’m guessing just the design of the front. How do you like the seat? It looks like a Russell Day Long???
I've had this one for about the same length of time and have put around 1,600 miles on mine in that time. I noticed the same uneasiness in dirty air on the highway. This can be significantly reduced by removing the top-box and having the windshield full-down (or completely removed as I do in the warmer months). Removing the shield is quick & easy and it makes a world of difference on days above 75 degrees - I can now enjoy the ST year round. It also significantly reduces wind noise. I hope that helps. I have a st 1100 its fine in town going to supermarket i load grocerys in panniers compared my vfr 750 engine not as free reving its more car like heavier fly wheel i do get my right hand gets tingling i dont get vfr i love it am thinking getting a st 1300 as well not sure enough diffrence i assume got unicam engine

Im also a big bloke, and thinking of either one of these or a Wing or a Valkyrie for my next bike, which will probably be my last one. How do they compare in comfort for us long legged chaps? Not overly ch oncerned with sporting performance (after my old ZX12R everything else seems to pale anyway) and Im not getting any younger so losing interest in going fast tgese days.
@@davidmatthews3093 there's going fast and then theres going stupidly fast. Its the second one Ive lost interest in lol. If I wanted to ho slow, Id just find a smaller bike like a deauville. Also, I like long trips and occasionally two up. And my size (6ft5 and 300+ lbs) limits me to larger bikes. And I generally dont like Vtwin cruisers
I find these more comfortable and lighter than the Wing or Valkyrie. I recommend trying out all three if you can and deciding which fits you and your riding style best. Good luck in your search!

@@dags6439 There were few changes throughout the production run so a 2005 is equivalent to the bike in the video. On the ST1300s it is critical that the brake system is maintained by having the fluid flushed periodically. Same with the clutch fluid. The brake system is quite complicated, so it takes time to service. Check the rear shock to make sure it still has damping - if you can get much up and down movement by plopping down on the seat at a stop, it may be time for a new one. The best thing would be to take someone familiar with the ST1300 with you when you look at the bike. I hope that helps. Good, well-rounded review. I had never considered that being tall could be an issue on motorcycles. At least you would have fewer issues if you were attracted to the big-bore adventure bikes! But I can't think of any that come in "classic".

Not especially. I have recently done an extensive service on it. Many service jobs are very quick and easy (Oil change, air filter change, rear oil change, etc.). I think the linked brakes are needlessly complex, but if you follow the sequence in the manual, changing the brake fluid is straight forward. Cheers!

Any major maintenance done yet? if so, would you mind sharing the cost of the maintenance? I see several options locally that are +/- 100K miles, the prices are tempting, just wondering if I should be looking to do any major maintenance soon if I buy a high milage one.
@someone46018 The ST1300 was an expensive bike originally. Because of the full fairing and some complexity (the linked brakes, for example), they aren't cheap to own if you have someone else service them. I wouldn't buy a high-mileage example unless you are planning to perform most services on your own. Good luck in your search!
One of the reasons some riders would prefer the FJR 1300 is the weight difference , small and mid- size riders really appreciate the lesser weight ; and the smaller visual bulk of the Yamaha .
@straightchad8059 The FJR is more compact and probably a better fit for some riders (as you point out). And the looks are subjective as well. Both are nice bikes. Cheers!
I had to thin the heard and decided to get rid of the FJR and keep the ST.
FJR had more power, quicker, six speed, cruise, but felt top heavy & buzzy in the handle bars.
ST1300 I just like better it’s my commuter bike. Except on hot days…
@sparkypdx I simply removed the windshield from the ST1300, and now it's completely rideable (and quieter) on warm days. I'll put it back on when the weather cools. Try it, you'll like it. Cheers!

@user-sh5dy5tr9d Thanks for the feedback, Eric! As a post script, since filming the review, I have put 750+ additional miles on the ST1300. Those miles include aggressive sport riding, touring, etc. I can honestly say I like it even more now. I even found a solution for the heat and wind noise - I just removed the windshield. The change is transformative, and I can now ride in 80+ degree heat in comfort. I'm a fan!
On pans and still ride both the 11 and the 13 ,for the last 23 years ,have been all over Europe, on both ,and to this day I cannot fault them ,for me the tyres and psi ,and fork oil is crucial ,I love them .sometimes people get to technical ,and I have always serviced all my hondas /pans ,if I don't know what's involved ,I go and find out ,these bikes are bullet proof ,but for me the 1100 is the business ,haven't enough time to explain the suttle differences ,no tech on my 11 ,so you use your skills ,I prefare the 11 ,hands down ,even though I have both currently ,4 pans under the belt,

This motorcycle was built for Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is very heavy and it is the hardest to drive it in first gear. When a certain angle is turned to the left or right, it is difficult to correct it. You must be a very strong man. Mine fell off a few times at 1 mph when I was revving it in a parking lot. Only auxiliary wheels can help here, which I really don't want to put on. Another big problem is instability at speeds above 100 mph. No one can solve these two problems. Regardless of everything, I love this motorcycle.
In 2011 Washington state patrol switched to the 1300 from a BMW and it was stated as more manuverable ,better acceleration and smoother at speed and lower maintenance cost and they are still in service today.

Paul speaking of WSP in the last 30 days two of them were auctioned off. 1st one went for over 7K & i did not log back in to see what the other one went for, probably the same because the same people were bidding on them.
These two must of gotten lost in the system because instead of the usual 70K+ miles they where like 5K and I believe they where 2016 models
I was temped… But who knows how high that 2nd one should go for

I owned my ST1300 for nine years and loved it. It was however a surprise to discover that when I downsized to a CB500X my annual mileage doubled.

I traded a 98 Blackbird in for my new 06 ST IN 08. Still had leftovers. Did enjoy the hard bags, more comfort, etc. Is a heavy bike, but disappears when moving. I got 116 RWHP at a dyno day. The all over torque is great. It IS a maint. intensive bike. Jon still has to experience the brake flush. I put some 60k miles on mine, the valves never moved with 2 or 3 checks...A good thing! A TB sync. goes a long way to cool off the heat coming onto you. Removing most of the inner fairing does the rest. Hard to believe but this thing will wheelie easily with all that torque, even at that weight. The fuel range is crazy with the 2 tanks. Also wheelies much easier when top tank is empty. I still miss the liter+ class power but am getting used to it. Love the lightness, simplicity, no maint. valves, etc. of my 92 750 Nighthawk now.
@petev.9357 Right on, Pete! I've now completed the brake fluid flush, mounted new tires, etc. I still need to check off a few maintenance items, but I am racking up the miles and enjoying every one. I spent yesterday doing some fairly aggressive sport riding and was pleasantly surprised. I hope to have this one in the garage for a while. Cheers!

Jon, I've owned an FJR, back a few years ago, it was a CHANGING experience. The power was incredible, the gas mileage was incredible, the bike itself was something that I needed to relearn how to ride. My "Bikes" are like yours, CB900C, and now more recently an '81 Yami XS1100H......... powerful in it's own right, however that FJR w/ 143 was in a different league. I've sold the FJR after owning it over a year and putting on over 1000 mi. on it. Not my cup of tea. I'll stay with the 70's/'80's UJM's!
@marcelgaud Interesting. For myself, I find that many modern bikes lack anything that really draws me in. They can feel capable but sterile. I don't feel that way about the ST1300. What didn't you like about the FJR - why did you sell it?
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Well Jon, it just wasn't "my thing". I did have to add "risers" that put the bars up and back , so that an old man like me riding wasn't a bother, the "SPORT" thing isn't good over a certain age. That made the bike "Doable" to go to Phoenix and back in the same day, with riding in between, about 500 mile day. No soreness. The "rack" on the back of the bike is pretty useless on the newer bikes, they're only made for holding bolted on trunks. The old UJM's had 13" wide racks, that you can hold a fully loaded SEA BAG, from boot camp, completely filled, 100lbs/ 3' high (wide), when strapped down. The new bikes, uh , uh, you're NOT going to be able to load up that Honda, or that FJR like that. PERIOD! UMJ's...... you could OVER LOAD the hell out of them and still ride 800 miles per trip "SAFELY"

I just moved from Latin-American to Spain, I'm looking for a touring bike to travel the country with my wife. So far I have this bike and the BMW K1200 as the possible options, the cost is similar; what I like about this Honda is that it is considerably lighter and nimbler than the BMW, also has a better reliability reputation, but the extra comfort and reverse gear on the BMW is tempting.
@someone46018 My wife enjoys riding the ST1300 with me. The K1200s are dirt cheap here, but they often have issues that are prohibitively expensive to fix. Maybe they are less expensive to have fixed in Europe, but I would steer clear based on my experience owning many BMWs (including the K1200). Cheers!

Just an FYI, the non ABS model has the same power/electrical adjustable windshield I have a 2008 non-ABS in red...great review and bike...my wifes NT700 deauville (the ST1300 baby brother with a v twin) has the non powered adjustable windshield...
My 2005 non ABS ST1300 also has the power adjustable windshield.

The first year, 2003, had manual shield on non-ABS. All years after, all bikes had electric shield.

Honda's ST1100/1300 is a great bike, no doubt but the FJR1300, especially the 2013 gen and up, wins hands down. The FJR has been in constant development since 2003, with each generation getting better and better and nothing beats cruise control. The aftermarket offers tons of support too, as well as a community that knows every centimeter of the bike.
@@leviefrauim1425 No doubt the FJR1300 is a great bike. I've had the 5-speed and 6-speed versions. Electronic cruise is a big plus (as you mention). I still prefer the smoothness and power delivery of the Honda V-4 as well as the roomier ergonomics and easy handling of the ST1300. I would be happy to have either one in the garage. Cheers!
That '04 FJR from Phoenix to Yuma, Az, got me 59mpg. My XS1100H gets about 36mpg. 6.6 gal. tank on the FJR/ 6.3, on the XS1100H model. (one gal. more than the normal XS1100)

I have had my st1300 for about 4 months. It’s a fantastic machine for sport and touring. One thing I have noticed is the roughness when I’m on the highway. The “dirty” air especially semis and bigger trucks makes my bike uneasy. I haven’t found a cause yet. I’m guessing just the design of the front. How do you like the seat? It looks like a Russell Day Long???
I've had this one for about the same length of time and have put around 1,600 miles on mine in that time. I noticed the same uneasiness in dirty air on the highway. This can be significantly reduced by removing the top-box and having the windshield full-down (or completely removed as I do in the warmer months). Removing the shield is quick & easy and it makes a world of difference on days above 75 degrees - I can now enjoy the ST year round. It also significantly reduces wind noise. I hope that helps. Wheelbase is short for touring bike,that's good and that range is fantastic and powerful too.85 is lots of torque.

I have a st 1100 its fine in town going to supermarket i load grocerys in panniers compared my vfr 750 engine not as free reving its more car like heavier fly wheel i do get my right hand gets tingling i dont get vfr i love it am thinking getting a st 1300 as well not sure enough diffrence i assume got unicam engine

Im also a big bloke, and thinking of either one of these or a Wing or a Valkyrie for my next bike, which will probably be my last one.
How do they compare in comfort for us long legged chaps? Not overly ch oncerned with sporting performance (after my old ZX12R everything else seems to pale anyway) and Im not getting any younger so losing interest in going fast tgese days.
If you don’t want to go fast don’t buy a Pan European.
@@davidmatthews3093 there's going fast and then theres going stupidly fast. Its the second one Ive lost interest in lol. If I wanted to ho slow, Id just find a smaller bike like a deauville. Also, I like long trips and occasionally two up. And my size (6ft5 and 300+ lbs) limits me to larger bikes. And I generally dont like Vtwin cruisers
I find these more comfortable and lighter than the Wing or Valkyrie. I recommend trying out all three if you can and deciding which fits you and your riding style best. Good luck in your search!

@@dags6439 There were few changes throughout the production run so a 2005 is equivalent to the bike in the video. On the ST1300s it is critical that the brake system is maintained by having the fluid flushed periodically. Same with the clutch fluid. The brake system is quite complicated, so it takes time to service. Check the rear shock to make sure it still has damping - if you can get much up and down movement by plopping down on the seat at a stop, it may be time for a new one. The best thing would be to take someone familiar with the ST1300 with you when you look at the bike. I hope that helps. Good, well-rounded review. I had never considered that being tall could be an issue on motorcycles. At least you would have fewer issues if you were attracted to the big-bore adventure bikes! But I can't think of any that come in "classic".

Not especially. I have recently done an extensive service on it. Many service jobs are very quick and easy (Oil change, air filter change, rear oil change, etc.). I think the linked brakes are needlessly complex, but if you follow the sequence in the manual, changing the brake fluid is straight forward. Cheers!
