- In this fun road test review, we'll be looking at Kawasaki's beautiful 1979 KZ1000 ST! Though overshadowed by its monstrous big brother, the KZ1300 • 1979-1989 Kawasaki KZ1... , the KZ1000 ST offered similar performance in a much simpler, lighter, and easier to manage package. Like the KZ1300, itt was offered from Kawasaki with an optional full fairing and saddlebags. This bike was purchased from the original owner with those options, which I subsequently removed. What's it like to ride? Let's find out together!

That's a great looking KZ. The old bikes are just timeless.
Thanks, Will!
A piece of history always worth watching/ riding !
Right on!
It is still among the exclusive group of the best looking bikes made 👍
I agree!
Sweet Ride, shaft drive no greasy maintenance. Enjoyed the video, Jon. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
Thanks, Henry!
Bough mine new July 1980 and still riding it.Just beautiful and completely original with 14,000 miles trouble free. (U.K.)
So cool, Andy! They are nice, low-maintenance machines. Cheers!
Hola Jhon.
¡Salud!
Good morning Jon ☕️. Nice bike...nice ride! I'm used to shaft drive on my previous streetbikes (XS, V65, VTX) It kind of just worked out that way. While researching modern bikes, It seems that most bikes don't offer shaft drive, except for the touring class.

That's true. I would love to see a nice modern sport standard with shaft-drive along the lines of the Nighthawk 700S or GS1100G. Cheers!
Yes 70s & 80s old bikes Rule 👍😊 Nice videos & info Thanks John
Right on! Thanks, Eric!
As always, Love your show Jon. Love the information on the bikes themselves. Thanks
You're welcome! Thanks for the feedback.
Love the KZ1000

Very nice bike and i actually never knew that there was a shaft driven 1000. I have a 81 kz1000j and a 82 kz1100 shaft driven and hope to make them as clean as that 79. Great post🏁🏁🏁
Thanks! I would love to ride and review a KZ1000J and KZ1100 shaft at some point. Those are nice machines. Cheers!
Another excellent video as always. I've always had a thing for the early Kawasaki models. Back in the '80s and '90s I first had a 1980 LTD 1000 and then years later bought a 1978 LTD 1000. I still miss those two bikes today.
I had a 750 ltd in black and first thing I did was get rid of those bucko handlebars and put a EMGO quarter fairing on it and it was great.
Thank you! That reminds me, I need to finish up my 1978 KZ1000 project. The early KZ1000s have always been bucket list bikes for me, and I'm getting close. Cheers!
@@paulscountry456 Yep, I can't stand the buckhorn bars either. Cheers!
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 The worst thing that can happen with carbs is the float needle , if the tiny orfice is plugged it can run out the overflow tube creating a fire hazard and traction issues, really fuel injection was the best improvement ever for internal combustion....lol
@@paulscountry456 same thing I did on both my LTD 1000s.
always wanted one of those!

Kawasaki is a amazing company and they are involved in so much more than bikes now but they are making some of the highest quality motors, I have a old roto tiller with a ten horse Kawasaki and it rips up the earth. You have some nice roads and that thing sounds so great and good bike for big guy.....oh yeah and great range,if you can go 200 that is a relief in some places.Kawasaki Heavy Industries is involved in far more than bikes and they are only a tiny portion of sales with Aerospace being big now for this Trillion Dollar company,I have owned at least seven over the years .Worst thing people do is let these carb bikes sit and the jets get plugged easily ,I always started mine up during storage and put in a in line filter as the tanks were not lined that well and in tank filters were not good at the time.
Right on! I'm a fan of Kawasaki aircraft going back to the WWII era. Those are great suggestions for the classic bikes. Cheers!
Nice.
Thanks!
The whistle. Perfect description.

Hey Jon, what was the compression ratio, on the '79? The original '78 XS1100 was 9.2 to 1, and my '81 went down to 9.0 to 1. My '81 Honda CB900C was 8.8 to 1.
I'd have to look it up. Probably in the 9 to 1 range. Cheers!
Hi Jon you are very knowledgeable guy do you know if the 1980 Yamaha xs850 triple comes with electronic ignition or still have points?? Thank you. Sal
Hi Sal, I'm not too familiar with the XS850 triple. I have never restored or even ridden one. I would assume that it went to electronic ignition by 1980, though.
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 thank you Jon
Bought mine new in 1980 and put 60,000 miles on it before I sold it
That's awesome!
Would love to see a similar cpacity shaft driven BMW of the same era in a side by side comparison with this KZ .
Right on! That's a good idea for a future video. They both have strengths and weaknesses compared to one another. Cheers!
Bmws looked really shit
@@user-fq1hf4bn1g Beauty is in the eye of the beholder 😉. Cheers!
Brake upgrades are important on these heavy weigh classics. I had a pick up truck with trailer pull out in front of me this week. I needed to brake at about 80% of max.
Right on! That's why most of my classics get suspension and brake mods. Cheers!
Enjoyed the video what price is on this bike ?
It isn't currently for sale. I will post to this channel if/when I decide to sell it. Cheers!
The sound of a Z, be still my beating heart!
Right on!
BTW, didn't the kick start lever sit under the seat from the factory? And did not have rubber where the foot rests?
Good eye! The original owner added the kick starter. I'm not 100% sure if it came under the seat originally. Cheers!
It was the kick lever on the Z1-R that sat under the seat, the one on the ST sit behind the side cover, I just learned.
@@64faffi Right on. Thanks for the update. Cheers!
doesn't look to in-a-hurry, kinda like my 'CB900C"
Yep. It was quick for its time but already outpaced by the XS1100 and others. Like the CB900C, it wasn't meant to be an all-out sport model. Cheers!
Hlo sir , iam from India 🇮🇳..can you say the price of YAMAHA FJ1200 😊..ITS MY DREAM TO BUY IT SIR!!
Currently in my area, a nice FJ1200 costs between $4000 and $8000, depending on the year, mileage, and condition. Greetings from Pennsylvania, USA!
I have one. Send me your email address and I can contact you.
What amount of Torque is being made? Maybe I'll go back and listen again............sorry
No problem, I know I mentioned it. Cheers!
WOW,only 28mm carbs. for OVER a 1000cc bike??? I have 34mm carbs. on my bike and it only measures 747cc.!!! Talk about saving gas!!! Lol.
Yep. It does carburate well, though. Cheers!
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Well, that's all that matters now, doesn't it? Great video Jon!
@@menom7 Right on!
My 1980 kz1000 ltd b4 also has 28mm carbs, l expected bigger,,
Never was a fan of squared off styling. 😬
No worries, to each his own. Cheers!
Even though it's a beautiful bike, and I would be happy to own one, I have to agree that the more rounded look is superior looking to my way of thinking.
