Drifting on a small eurorack system
This is a new build and I made it with a 60hp limitation as the case is a DFAM enclosure.
Just learning the modules but wanted to put a jam up to share.

The Oxi One is a new device to me but I’ve recently decided to go all in on the iPad workflow and I needed a sequencer that gave me a lot of options, I feel it’s really deep but also quite inspirational. Also this setup is totally portable so now I can write anywhere which is cool! Apps used: Retro Piano Ridgewalk Weeping Wall Transit Other Desert Cities FAC Alteza EOS2

Picked these two up recently pretty cheap, I’d owned both before but never really got to know them very well. I think I see the value of the EDGE more than I did before and I’m preferring the TR-8 over the 8s as it’s pretty much a knob per function device. Even with all that simplicity bough I still felt very busy in this jam, definitely need more practice!

THE TRANSITION IS INSANE
@@aubrey5495 yeah the sequencer can go pretty fast and make cool Drones, bringing it down to a groove is fun!
I'm really impressed with this jam. It's given me ideas for how to use mine. I've only had it a few weeks and have mainly used it for sequenced bass, but obviously it's capable of so much more. It's a beautiful sounding beast. Quite unique, I think.
@@matthewtunnicliffe201 thanks dude, this was my first day with this synth and I found it to be a very wonderful piece of gear for sound exploration. I don’t have it anymore but sometimes get the feeling like I’d love to jam it again, there’s nothing else quite like it.
This was a lovely little mental escape this morning! Thank you!.
Thanks dude and nice to see you here again!
@@streetdoghanoi It's been too long brother!
Awesome setup and jam. It shows that you can get a lot out of a small system. I saw your answer about how to get into modular and I really recommend people start with VCV Rack since you can easily recreate a setup like this for free. You have to resist the urge to add all of the modules and focus on building a small setup to learn the modules. Playing with VCV Rack can help you decide which hardware modules you want/need to purchase if you move that way in the future.
Totally agree, far too easy to waste money when getting into hardware, especially eurorack. It's probably the most niche version of an already very niche hobby!
Just amazing what you are cranking out of that DFAM case. Excellent job curating modules.
Thanks dude it was fun getting this system together!
I'm also from Reddit. I love the sounds you can get from those modulators and for this I would like to ask you: I would also like to build my first eurorack, but I don't know if I'm buying the right thing, or if by purchasing several modulators they will give me the sound I was looking for or not ... here's how you did all this? How did you manage to get what you wanted? How did you start your journey? Thank you
@@GGTBB I'm wondering the same thing. I'd love to take some mushrooms and do what he did in that video.
Wow man this is a big question and I'll do my best to answer properly. Ok so I've been into hardware for about 3-4 years but the eurorack thing only for the last 3 months or so. I avoided eurorack for a long time as its just a very niche and expensive space if you dont know what you're doing. See, you can build anything in this format but is it worth it? I've got $20 apps on my iPad that wipe the floor with $600 eurorack modules (mostly talking about granular synth stuff here) so there's some things I don't think I'll try to do in this format. Also, there's a lot of cool modules out there and the whole thing is very moreish, month after month you'll buy more and eventually realize you got a kinda limited system that costs more than a high end synth. So why did I go there now? Because I found an really cheap and complete setup on the local marketplace for about $300 that was perfect to get me started (and I just kinda like hardware). This was a good test for me to see if I clicked with eurorack. Next I asked myself what do I want from it? See, if you dont have a plan then you're going to buy things you dont need and that's a very expensive route in this format. The way I normally make music is with only one or two pieces of gear but what I mostly "jam" is the fx I apply to my system. I wanted a system that would let me continue to make music in the workflow I'm comfortable with. Based on this I needed a system that had good utility, rack space enough for one voice that was dynamic enough to be enough to carry a whole track and all the fx that I normally used previously in software. Even without eurorack, hardware music production is costly and this actually got me into some good habits like always buying used so I can get my investment back later, doing gear swaps, keeping a gear in / gear out rule, stuff like that. This enabled me to try a lot of stuff and gave me a good understanding of how synths, sequencers and drum machines work. Next I go to my favourite music production platform which is IOS and on my iPad I use an app called Drambo and start building some synths and fx chains. After that, feeling ready to make a system for real I then go to a website called Modular Grid. Modular Grid is great because you can make your rack there and it'll tell you how much space you need, what your system would cost (new) and what your power requirements are etc. In my case I had a faulty DFAM so I just stored the synth away for a rainy day repair project and decided to use the case for this setup. Using a DFAM case gave me a really useful limitation, size. IT's 60hp (horizontal pitch) and I set my system in Modular Grid to be that size. Then I started adding modules. I knew I needed a filter for example but that site let me state that it couldnt be more than 8hp as thats the space I had remaining. working this way made me really thing about what was going in the case and what I really did and didnt need. My last requirement of this setup was that I could chill and jam it anywhere, this meant I NEEDED reverb, a headphone jack and ideally be able to power it from a power bank. Also I have an amazing sequencer (Oxi One) but for this build I wanted something in the case that could do that job, turns out Pam's Pro Workout is an amazing sequencer as well as a clock source and waveform generator so that module is kinda like 4 modules in one. My last consideration was what else can all of these modules be used for ?I know later I want to make an end of chain performace fx box and all of these will fit nicely in that system. Once you have thought about all this stuff, created your own parameters you need to build within and are clear on your vision then go buy stuff! Also there's a free software called VCV Rack (MiRack on IOS), you can build setups there, patch them and hear how things will sound. Here's a link to my rack: modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2739176 Here's VCV rack: vcvrack.com/ Here's Drambo website: www.beepstreet.com/ios/drambo Hope all this helps you in some way and answers your questions, thanks for the listen dude!

@@SequenceMode thanks for the kind words and it’s a great synth for sure, does need a little composition when setting up a jam but still gives you space for improvisation. It’s just really unique, I think you can totally just add reverb to this thing and lose a lot of time in it.

Thx a lot for videos :-) Have you tryed Harmonie Bloom App? And have you reaxzed the Limits of the ipad mini?
@@RollectricSound you’re welcome and thanks for putting the bloom app on my radar, looks great! The mini 6 was definitely powerful enough, I upgraded to an M4 pro just because I had the chance but the mini was always enough, it’s more powerful than it looks.
Awesome trip😘. is it a very slow LFO, S&H, square wave trip?
@@remigiangolec7420 this jam was all of that, I really had no idea what I was doing as it was the second day I had this synth. Total sound exploration synth, really takes you to another place. I could never get a normal sound out of it, all my jams were like….this 😂
I like your approuch on making music. What do you prefer about the OXI in comparising to the T1? I like the tutorials about the T1 much more. It seems to be an easier handling at all. Good for live-jamming. The OXI needs more in-depth-diving but has more features and is more versatile. Can handle an ipad mini the audio processing?
@@markzenk178 hey dude! The iPad mini 6 is great for music production and remember all these devices are is midi controllers so I don’t think a lot of processing in the iPad side is involved, all that happens on the device. The Oxi One and the Torso T-1 have some feature overlap but they are not the same in regard to workflow, both are very immediate once you know them. A key difference which will let you know which you prefer is muscle memory. The Torso wants you to just play it and remember it’s shift combos etc and once you get into that space with it you can develop a real state of flow, it’s really nice in that regard but you have to get to that level to feel it’s true value I think. Personally I love the Torso for this and miss having one. The Oxi One is amazing for me as a controller that generates melodic ideas that you can sculpt over time. It’s have the Euclidean features of the Torso but it does a lot more than that, it’s incredibly deep and for that will fit into more workflows I think. I find it very inspiring and I won’t be selling it. Know this though, both of these devices are serious RTFM devices, to really reap the benefit of their feature set you have to put the time in but they will reward you for doing so. I made a video a while back that was just torso plus iPad and the run up to that video was a pretty solid week of just learning and developing some muscle memory but yeah, once you’re over that then it’s very immediate.
Very nice 😊shoutout to the iPad users! Cool painting in the background. Subbed!
@@3rdPersonProductions thank you and I love the iPad, it’s in everything I do musically pretty much, so powerful!

@@G0nz0uk thank you dude! Yes it’s fx and recording only. I’m using a delay called Other Desert Cities. That goes into FabFilter Saturn for some saturation. Then there’s an app called transit for performance multi fx but I didn’t use it much at all here. Lastly we go into a reverb called EOS2. Normally I’d add normal end of chain stuff like. Compressors and limiters etc but in this jam I didn’t want to squash the sound to much, preferred to let the level sit low and let it have room for movement.

@@itsmaxmint thank you for listening dude! For what you want to do though I recommend just download koala sampler for your phone, it’s a great tool and very powerful.
@@streetdoghanoi Hey! Thank you for the recommendation. Koala is definitely 500 times cheaper to try out. So far experimenting with it was fun, even though I did not come up with anything recordable yet. Is there any other haptic instrument you would recommend to start with?
@@itsmaxmint well hardware samplers have different use cases I feel. I never liked the MPC software but their pads are the best out there in regards to feel. The Roland SP404mk2 is amazing for ambient stuff and has great fx and you can sample long passages of audio but the sequencer and workflow is not nice, too many updates lead to too many hidden features and button combos to access stuff. The Digitakt is the most fun and immediate but mostly it’s good for shorter one shot sampling, I love it though and the mk1 can be found used pretty reasonably priced. What you can do though is add a midi controller to your koala setup, I recommend getting a Novation Launchpad X, it’s great. Then you can just map pads via midi learn. It’s a lot about what style of music you want to make though and remember all these devices are digital, so using an iPad or iPhone is totally valid, you just want to build out from there with the right midi controller to give you a tactile interface.
The part at 1:24 where both sequences are running in parallel is gorgeous!
