When Medieval Doctors Prescribed Sex as Medicine
มุมมอง 4.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Medicine in the Middle Ages was often a lot more complex and sophisticated than many people assume. In the 11th century, a translation movement reintroduced much of ancient medical theory and introduced for the first time much from the Arabic tradition into the medieval medical worldview, and medieval physicians would use this theory to diagnose and suggest cures for their patients. But what ha...

The kingdom, or empire, of Ghana is one of those kingdoms which many people may know by name, but few know much beyond that. It doesn't help, of course, that of all the major West African kingdoms (Ghana, Mali, Songhay) it is the one about which there is the least information remaining. Nonetheless, what we do know tells us that it was a powerful and important regional power in West Africa, and...
When A Medieval Poet Reflects On Roman Ruins
มุมมอง 2.1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The lives of those who came before have fascinated humans for as long as we can tell. Looking at and contemplating the relics of those who are long gone has long inspired us to think and create. The same was true in the middle ages, where the remains of the Roman world could often be seen and invoked awe. For one Anglo-Saxon poet in the 8th or 9th century, this awe inspired the writing of a poe...
Were Medieval Parents Attached To Their Children?
มุมมอง 50K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Infant and child mortality were high in the middle ages. Many children would never reach adulthood. Because of this, you may have heard the idea that parents didn't invest themselves emotionally into their children below a certain age, knowing that there was a good chance the child wouldn't survive. But is this true? Were medieval parents really uncaring toward the loss of their children? Follo...
How Did Pre-Modern People Understand Gravity?

When we think of gravity, we tend to think of Isaac Newton. But even before Newton, people knew that things fell down towards the ground. But did they ever ask why? Well, yes they did! Was Medieval Spain Especially Tolerant?

The concept of Convivencia (usually translated as coexistence) has long been used to characterise inter-faith relations between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in medieval Spain. Despite the wars of the Reconquista, the Iberian peninsula has been presented as a place of tolerance and cooperation. But is this really accurate? Or was the reality more complicated? France, one of the most important and iconic kingdoms of the middle ages, was a rather divided land in the early 11th century. However big the empire/kingdom, be it any religion, they all drown in the winds. So, what do people still pursue? Do people pursue the building of Kingdoms, or do they pursue a spiritual path ?

    Sicily is a poor example of Christian Europe for so many reasons. eg it was taken over from Muslims, had a massibe Muslim population which didnt exist elsewhere, the Christian king was far more enlightened than others etc. The dynamic can never be compared to anywhere else at the time. You surely know this. And if thats your prime example your hypothesis is very much questionable.

    10:15 sounds like there would be at least dozens of people at these early elections. Surely there must have been some dramatic event somewhere that drastically cut the number of electors to just 7? (if the Golden Bull only codified the election procedure already in practice and did not dictate it)

    • @studiumhistoriae
      @studiumhistoriae 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It had been gradually reduced over the course of the 12th and 13th centuries, though the numbers ebbed and flowed. But eventually you get this idea that a smaller number of the most powerful magnates represented all the others. In the 1200s there's this idea that the 7 electors from the Golden bull were the most important and they were guaranteed the right to elect and were the first to do so, but by the Golden Bull they become the only electors.

    Because of the feudal structure of almost every state in medieval europe, thereby giving the nobility practically almost equal power to the king, pretty much every kingdom had the same method of choosing a king in practice. However, there was just less of a precedent to do so, but it still happened. In England especially, there were cases of this. Louis VIII of France was declared to be king of England by the rebellious English nobles in the first barons war for example.

    In-depth historical study of HRE dynamics should be a mandatory curriculum in political sciences, international relations, and democracy, human rights and peace/conflict studies. At law uni I learned how Roman Law become important because of the reputation of the (og) roman empire. It is a process of "finding the law". When abbots and law scholars could find, often times litterally in some dusty monastery library, "how it's done" because "the Romans did so" there is less possibility of the war business becoming real. Fear can be an originator of conflict but uncertainty is the escalator. It's a matter of expectations. You expect to do more or less what your parents did, or at least use that as a guideline. And if your parents never faced that situation or were pretty bad at it, well, there is it, the All-Father, the og Roman Empire. It's human knowledge transfer.
