I bought the dominion box at a local sale for 80 Euro... that box is an easy yes for spearhead as you only need a chariot and 10 vanquishors for yndrastas spearhead, which can be easily proxied by the 10 liberators from skaventide

I have just finished my ork combat patrol (old version). what combat patrol would be a balanced game to play against this? I want to buy another to keep so I can play when a friend comes round.

A "Combat Zone XY" book with improved rules for Combat Patrol would certainly be welcome!

It's pretty simple. Combat Patrol is a starter game, it teaches the mechanics of 40k fine but there is no reason or interest to go back and play it specifically once you know the basics (I'd rather just play a 500 point game). In contrast, Spearhead is effective in both teaching the mechanics AND being fun by giving different tactical decisions through the secondary cards design, reinforcements, and the 4 enhancements for the general. You can play multiple times even with the same couple factions and have a different experience every time. But one of the most important parts-- Spearhead lets you actually DO things with your units, everything has an ability, so it's exciting thinking through all of the possibilities. It lets players FEEL tactical and grants some measure of play identity. Combat Patrol is HIGHLY faction dependent, with some outright having NO abilities on any of their units (World Eaters, for one). The fact that these also tend to be the better-value boxes certainly doesn't help either. TL;DR Spearhead is replayable without getting dull. Maybe in 11th we'll get something better for 40k but right now, this ain't it chief.

Combat Patrol is a really nice concept but it desperately needs a refresh imo. I kind of wish they'd divorce it from the intro boxes entirely and just do a series of set armies for each faction that rotates say once a year. Atm if you want to play it as anything more than an introduction to 40k it's badly handicapped by balance issues and legacy patrols with vehicles (e.g the Dark Angels Redemptor patrol) etc. I can't say that Spearhead appeals to be that much because of the tiny map size. I saw the WH+ games and it just looks like a bit of a mess. Maybe fun for a couple of games.

In general, I prefer a large board because it provides lots of room for terrain features. Then again, for a very small skirmish game, a large board can sometimes mean that multiple turns are spent just on getting a model from one end of the battlefield to the other, which in a game that only lasts 5 turns feels like a waste. Ultimately, the best board size depends on the intent of the armies playing that game.

I bought the dominion box long ago for the SCE but after building the Boyz, I fell in love. Then fourth came out and they’re not hot garbage. It’s a super fun army and I’m glad you reviewed them early!

For the reviews, do skip the 2 skaventide spearheads, those have been done to death imo. Do review the rest just like you've done for combat patrol. Minor shoutout for Nighthaunt and Lumineth, but do cover the interesting asymmetrical ones like KO and SOB

while not starting with this product, I own a dark imperium SM half and this is really similar. thanks for the pointers on how to expand on this

The combat patrol is honestly more interesting than the battleforces

wish was not 2 exaction squads 1 and breachers would prob have been perfect. but damn not bad.

AoS terrain bonus pcs are the epitome of WTF imo. (No pressure, they are 0 point and we ain't holding you at a gun point to buy it) Same as when GW decide to "buffing" units by reducing points. It's such a dick move full of conflicts of interest (players used to have a 2k points army, oh great now they have to buy more boxes to fill "buffed" unit points void) Lately I just take GW's games as an out-of-box game experience. Like launching boxes or vs boxes aren't THAT bad in value and I'd just play with my buddies with those troops and call it a day 😂

Buying all the new boxes (around $800) can get you a rough 2000 point inquisition army

Imperial Agents + Imperial Knights is exactly why these new boxed sets interest me. I was already cobbling together an army consisting of Knights and Agents, but these have some interesting options.

At @1:48 the article mentions enhancements for each detachment. Depending on if these enhancements cost points, it could list building for better, ie. A list with 475 points and a 25 point enhancement

Your video was pretty interesting, and I’m quit interesting what your tipps will be once the full skaven release has had uts change to refresh the skaven. Although there are a few small pointers I’d like to add. 1. Making thematic Soaven list. As it is currently Skaven don’t really have any real lore in aos, in sich cases we’ll have to take older sources from tomes before the end times. If we consider the lore of old. Almost every clan has access and breeds their own clanrats (as well as slaves) So having clanrats no matter if you want to go Clan Skryre, Mors, moulder or pestilence, clanrats will be your essential. Secondly. Units like Stormvermins are the more elite breed, and while they are officially a source of warriors that most clans have access, it is not unoften heard of that the lesser clans (warlord clans or verminus as they are known today) sell their best Stormvermins to the higher paying customer, especially when the buying customers wants to boast about his power and might (which all skaven enjoy doing) Then there are the lesser clans, of which some have had success and got rich or powerful in their own through being at the right place or having been able to take-steal dwarfen holds (like for example clan Mors and Rictus) Others may have a pact-deal with one if the greater clans gaining, access to the vast amount of weaponry the clan can other. Officially the heraldry and uniform book, while not available can be found on the internet in a pdf form and has a huge amount of lore bits and stuff telling you how the clan works functions etc. same can be said about the loathsome ratman, which is not only an amazing book but also describes each clan fantastically. Most of those can be found as a free pdf on the internet, which is what I would suggest most people to have a look into. Beyond that have fun starting skaven

I managed to find the old spearhead but it’s gone, unfortunately. It’s a fun box.

I bought 3x skavetide boxes, to run them as tyranids, 120 clan rats = hormagaunts, 9 snipers for 9 zoenthropes, 9 ogres as tyranid warriors, the 3x ratling guns for exocrines, the mounted rat will get some prime wings to be a winged tyranid prime.. grey seer will be a neurotyrant for the zoenthropes its not exactly an amazing list but will be fun for casual i think its roughly 2000 points of tyranids combining the 3x boxes, i sold the stormcast to a coworker cheap for $150 for all 3x halves to help him out.

didn't realise wanting to upgrade to 2000pts would nickel and dime me like that, was intending to build up to a stormcast, skaven and seraphon army based on the skaventide and spearhead boxes :(

just a few days ago, they removed even more Skaven models from the Store, also some characters, so think we will have a huge refresh soon. with the skaven you do need to go towards a clan depending on your Heroes, and the Battle Formation is also very clan orientated. (Verminus, Moulder, Skryre or Pestilence) nothing for clan Eshin as for Battle Formation now. Warlocks lets you take Skryre units. the Clawlord Verminus units. Grey Seer All skaven. so you need to go towards units that fit the clan you want to play with, like i am going towards Skryre with the old Vanguard Box. most heroes lets you take a unit of Clan Rats and the Stormfiend are both Moulder and Skryre.

A new army box? In this economy?

Could have just released the two characters and an upgrade sprue and that about covers the real new contents of this box. Otherwise it's just 20 normal JP/Intercessors and a Brutalis. Poor BA players are losing a really nice unique Death Company kit in favor of some pretty cheap upgrade frames.

For the people saying "Could this box be a hint for the new BA combat patrol?" my answer is no. I don't think GW is going to include named characters moving forward, and a Brutalis is out of the question as well unless they changed their course on Combat Patrol again. The next BA combat patrol will be very vanilla and similar to the Dark Agnels one. I don't play AOOS (Yet...), long time 40k player. However, Dominion went on sale for £60 so I bought two boxes and sold the rule books and duplicate heroes to recoup most of the money. The rest has been sat on my shelf, and now I just picked up a copy of Skaventide. I think it's time to build, paint and get into AOS as some friends have started too. This video helped me, thanks!

I like the secondary benefits from getting Questor Soulsworn and/or the old Spearhead box. Not only would they help expand your army very well, but they also open up alternate gameplay options, via a second Spearhead force, or a very solid bespoke team for WarCry (and WarCry is great, go play WarCry!).

For Ordo Malleus, the advantage of getting 2 sets of Inquisitorial Henchmen is this: The kit only builds half the unit. You can run it as a 14 man unit (16 if you can acquire a Daemonhost and Jokaero), so this box can build a full sized retinue for Coteaz.

How do I expand a box that has no heroes that can take any worthwhile cav or shooting for which almost all the existing options I wouldn't dare tell someone to buy, due to getting squatted either already or likely next edition, beats me man its a schizo box and the army is a mess atm. Maybe 10 vanqs or soulsworn, 3 more reclusians, and like 9 more prosecutors.

I got both Dominion and Skaventide SCE half. Too many heroes though.

I got my hands on Dominion right before Skaventide got announced. Im definitely planning on picking up Skaventide sooner or later and was considering getting the 2023 SCE battleforce but someone at my locals snatched it before i could After i get the Skaventide models ill probably pick up the chariot next so i have 2 spearheads to play Then i found 2 other boxes my locals has, need to do some more research to see if any of the units in them will actually be useful to me, but theres the Thunderstrike Brotherhood start collecting box and one called "Ven Brecht's Black Watch" But ill definitely be checking ebay for some extra Reclusians

the core rules state that we have a max of 5 Regiments, all other units have to be Auxiliary units :)

A few additional tips and things I wanted to mention: -DO NOT buy the Stormcast Factionpack. These cards are going to be outdated in 2-3 months, once the SCE Battletome releases. -I would not recommend buying Skaventide twice for the sole purpose of bolstering your SCE ranks. You are going to drown in character models you do not need. -Check ebay for separate Reclusians and Prosecutors if you want to reinforce your units. -Whenever you buy Stormcast units, make sure to check whether they are going to get moved to legends next year or not!
