Pretty Fair Maid in a Garden
A traditional song learned from Ora Watson, born 1911. I met Ora when I was around twenty and she was about sixty. We spent over forty years playing music and sharing a rich friendship. Ora and I had a great time performing in the Cacklin’ Hens String Band, an all-female group. Later Cecil and I created a grouping that featured Ora. We learned a lot of music from her and truly enjoyed the years together. Ora Watson was a female fiddler, guitar and banjo player plus singer of ballads and folksongs plus country, gospel, and bluegrass music. We recently released a recording of her (and sometimes us) available at fieldrecorder.org/product/ora-watson-watauga-county-nc-old-time-music-frc720/.

This old-time and early country favorite song has roots that stretch back across time. It was published in 1877 with words by by G. P. Cook and music by Ralph Roland. Numerous artists, including the Carter Family, have recorded it with changes to both melody and text. It has such a sweet sentiment that it also found its way into my standard repertoire. I volunteer as a historic interpreter and ...

The Unclouded Day - Mountain Dulcimer

A shape-note hymn written in 1879 by Josiah Kelley Alwood. The song lyrics were inspired by the unusual experience of seeing a rainbow by moonlight! This beloved song was part of my musical heritage growing up in a shape-note singing family and church.
You Are My Sunshine- learn to play melody by ear
มุมมอง 1874 ปีที่แล้ว
Sequential introduction to playing the melody by ear plus simple chords on the banjo. Ear training approach moves from learning to sing the melody first and then to learning small phrases on the bsnjo. Then those phrases are pieced back together. Trial and error will be part of the learner’s process.

Learning to play by ear requires careful listening. Learn to sing this simple song first by echo singing, then after putting the song into your ear by repetition, try playing the echo part on your uke. You can even watch your instructor's hands (yes, I know I helped you out on purpose)! If you want to up the challenge, look away from the video. That is real playing by ear!

    Do = C Re = D Mi = E Fa = F Sol = G La = A Si = B Si NOT "ti" You are playing a scale of D so Re, not Do.

      In America we customarily use a moveable solfège system rather than a fixed solfège system. I have taught students who came from a Spanish speaking background who exposed me to the “fixed do” system that you are referring to. I found it quite interesting and different to what I was accustomed to using. Both systems are in existence both historically and currently. So you and I are both correct in different geographic regions. In America the use of “si” is still used by singers in the Sacred Harp tradition that comes from the early 1800s while “ti” is customary among seven shape-note gospel singers. So glad you took time to watch and thoughtfully respond to my video!

    • @marygreenemusic5507
      @marygreenemusic5507 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a very difficult question! One fine resource is a video on TH-cam on the Lee Cagle Music channel titled Sound Comparison of Various Mountain Dulcimers. The least expensive way to begin is with a cardboard body instrument from Backyard Music. McSpadden dulcimers are excellent quality and moderately priced. Best of luck sorting through the incredible variety of instruments! Also just because it is sold at a music store does not mean it is a decent instrument - just saying. Also go to the Banjo Lemonade channel and watch her video titled Watch This Before You Buy a Mountain Dulcimer.

    I've taken ukulele lessons at the local Senior Center. I have a soprano Makala and a concert Amahi. I went to buy a new soprano for myself, the Makala is my granddaughters and she was sharing it with me for my lessons, and I thought the Amahi was prettier than the sopranos they had. So I picked up and strummed it. The sound was so rich, I said this is the one I want. Didn't play it again or anything. It's a beautiful sounding instrument. To my ears anyway...lol. I learned a really bad way to try and play a G chord. My hand was twisted the wrong way. So I'd fake it. But one day I looked at how some of the other class members were playing it and I was so off. I have double jointed fingers that tend to lock up when I'm twisting them around. I'd really, REALLY, love to see some videos of the basic chord fingerings you use. You make the D look easy but it's very hard for me. I play out of The Daily Ukulele a lot. It's all chords, I've never learned to play the notes. Thank you!!

    • @marygreenemusic5507
      @marygreenemusic5507 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gina, I find your comment highly interesting. I immediately thought of using kinesiology tape to stabilize the affected joints as I have doing this lately myself . I did a Google search and turned up the idea of using a mix of oval-8 finger braces and kt tape to help stabilize overly flexible joints. I hope this is helpful.

      Hi Denise! I have never tried that. I had baritone ukes for my public school classroom and also personally have soprano and tenor ukes. I looked online for some info and found a thread discussing this idea in detail. It also makes specific string suggestions. Go to forum.ukuleleunderground.com/index.php?threads/tuning-a-tenor-dgbe-like-a-baritone.47461/. Best of luck with it all! Or...just buy a baritone uke, which I found a great size for 6th grade hands. I also taught these kids guitar and could combine guitar and baritone instruction in the same class - quite efficient!

      Hi Scott! Mountain dulcimers are amazing instruments. You can play melody, harmony, and rhythm simultaneously - plus it has a truly unique sound. Explore your options as far as instruments. My particular instrument was made by Rick Stone who also made Joni Mitchell's instrument. My other dulcimers were made by traditional WNC builders who are also deceased. Warren May is a well known builder. McSpadden Dulcimers and Folkcraft instruments come to mind. Blue Lion is a top name. Check out individual builders such as Walter Messick and Ron Ewing. Check this link for more names and contact info: everythingdulcimer.com/builders.php Try to play several instruments before buying. That way you have several points of comparison.
