    "Best free firewall", portmaster? Nah, maybe personal preference, but definitely simplewall for me, competent intelligent developer that pushes fast fixes, can talk to him directly via telegram, small footprint, easy to understand clean and efficient source code, uses wfp. Comparing to portmaster, lots of spaghetti code, multiple people working on it, but they don't seem to master the subject of sw engineering, firewall mechanics and security. Needs kernel permission, are you kidding me?! This is the reason why it bsod on people, check what happens when you disable the kernel service, then reboot, enjoy your bsod and devs have no clue how to fix it, sure. From a security perspective, this is a no go. It uses 3 executables with an extremely long string of args passed down, just one exe for notification tray that is bugged on reboot (i.e. shows blank) and devs have no idea how to fix this? And y'all recommend this as "best free" firewall that has a huge footprint and runs inefficient... Not to mention, it's not truly foss when there are paid features build in sw, inc. bandwidth usage and history, which process hacker does for free for years, so it's good that some unix distros have renamed it to "propriatary" and removed from privacytools.io, we got too much poison lately with false pretenders. Compare to simplewall, both use WFP, but it's much smaller footprint and the claim from portmaster to capture more than simplewall to need to run as kernel extension is BULLSHIT, it captures a little bit more non essential things more before the rest is loaded, wow just several more sync connections to MS servers that are allowed ANYWAY and since both are using WFP, they rely on MS which does NOT capture everything, unlike previous NDIS drivers in XP days. Their exaggerated claims to be best is not backed up by evidence, at all. Got this uninstalled after I observed how this piece of sw works, the flow of handles using process hacker and sysinternal tools I've no confidence in this, at all. When it comes to security, competent masterful and skillful developers are required, especially made by (former) hackers, not basement amateur coders that don't know fully what they're doing and are not even afraid to honestly tell in public, then continue to do what they have no control over, great, this is what people recommend, I see what times we live in. You want a good firewall? Get a decent capable router to flash a unix os on, something like openwrt and use simplewall to block apps on individual pcs. Nothing more needed. If you need finegrain control, you should not even be on windows...

    How are Brave and Thorium holding up right now Ken?

    • @KenHarrisio
      @KenHarrisio 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Here's where I'm standing with things currently - I've seen comments in both my videos and other places on social media talking about the political viewpoints of the devs. Some people will or won't use software based on that and that's okay, but the issue is that they think others should do the same. I'm pragmatic about what I use. The issue I have with Thorium wasn't the political statement the author made, it was how they went about it. Because of the nature of the incident, it was a huge breach of trust with the community to do that and it shouldn't have ever happened. There's nothing stopping them from potentially doing it again in the future. In the IT world, a business/gov agency would drop a contract if someone did something like that and never recommend them to someone else. I hold those views for anything I use at a personal level. As far as Brave, the founder has voiced political opinions, but it's not something I care about. The software itself has worked great and I continue to use it daily. The crypto garbage is easy to turn off. The affiliate links were a problem, but not big enough to stop me from using it. I keep up to date on what happens with software I use and will drop them if they ever do anything that crosses what I deem unacceptable. An example of something else that could go that route is Fedora if they ever make telemetry opt-out (that shouldn't ever be accepted with a consumer Linux distro). That said, I also daily drive multiple browsers and the use of each one depends on the task at hand.

    I'm running Windows 11 Pro 22H2 OS build 22621.4037 and "Microsoft Vulnerable Driver Blocklist" is ON however that option is grey and I can't turn it off if I would like to. Any idea why? Would the app Configure Defender set to the MAX setting have anything to do with that? If not that, what? Thanks!

    • @KenHarrisio
      @KenHarrisio 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I've toggled CD back to default and it was still forced on. I had a look at MS documentation which says this: "If you have memory integrity, Smart App Control, or Windows S mode on, the vulnerable driver blocklist will be on too." I interpret that as if you have any of those three items on, the blocklist will be forced on as well. I'll be making a 2024 edition Windows hardening guide video soon and will include the results in there. The CD app can force some of the other settings to stay enabled though if you select max settings.

    For ppl comenting at 9000 series badly: Look at Phoronix Linux benchmarks: they are great. They want to take that market from Intel with the soon-to-come Epyc. Remember: Servers run Linux mostly and Intel is no longer a competition in the gaming market.

    • @KenHarrisio
      @KenHarrisio 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There must have been something going on with how people were benchmarking the 9000 series. I've looked at more benchmarks and some show a sizeable difference, where others showed about the same performance between the 7000 and 9000 series, in both performance and power usage. AMD is in a great spot in the server market and I think Intel is in a lot of trouble there in the coming years.

    I appreciated listening to this video. A lot of the thought I've had. I appreciate Zen 5, I can see it from the perspective of the average consumers price to performance concerns. I think Zen 5 would have had good reception if they released it at the current prices of Zen 4. I was disappointed to see them release at the prices they chose. Most of the benchmarks I've looked at show the performance is about the same between the two. As it stands right now, the 7800X3D/5800X3D are the best value gaming CPUs depending on the budget available. Thanks for supporting the channel! It seems to be at a pretty good spot now with 10K. I've got enough time to respond to most comments still and I like talking about niche topics. It gets a lot more fun once you find a groove that works for you. 13th and 14th-generation Intel desktop CPUs are pretty much the same thing due to Meteor Lake not clocking well on the desktop. The crashing issue does land on Intel, they should have locked all the cores and not done this silly single-core boost bs. That being said, AMD CPUs that boost single-core will have the same issues and do. Frame Chasers probably has the best breakdown on this, while I like Steve over at GN, he's not the best resource on this issue. Pat took over as CEO at Intel after it had already hit the iceberg, Arrow Lake / Lunar Lake, Intel Arc, IDM 2.0, etc, are what he has been working on, and these things take time, lots of time. Over the next couple of years, we will see how well or badly Pat has done. Regarding layoffs, Cisco laid off 4000 people, Meta, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have all had layoffs, this isn't just an Intel thing. Also, you can't have a strong AMD with Intel taking up 90% of the market. Intel needs to stabilize and make up for the lost market share that AMD now has by taking market share from TSMC, not taking it back from AMD. That's the worst case here, we want AMD to do well. We should all want Intel's IDM 2.0 to work. I thought this might be a well-thought-out video starting with AMD pre-Lisa Sue, but it is just another Intel hit piece by someone who has no idea what is happening.

  • @RobBCactive
    @RobBCactive 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    You missed out Intel's illegal practices to hinder AMD sales, when they had better processors they weren't able to even give the chips away to certain OEMs. That denied AMD profits, thus investment. Intel were prosecuted in many cases, including bribing Dell execs, as well as anti-competive schemes to freeze AMD out. AMD were under resourced, they gambled on Bulldozer idea and lost, while Intel achieved the monopoly benefits and the accountants milked profits with steady improvements but lowering costs.

    • @KenHarrisio
      @KenHarrisio 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great point - it's something I should have included in the video, especially after reading some of the comments here. It seems like people either forgot or didn't know that Intel has lost multiple times to AMD because of the business practices that happened. The OEM case probably cost AMD a huge amount of money compared to the amount the court ordered as payment.

    • @RobBCactive
      @RobBCactive 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@KenHarrisio They also had worse processors, and magically incorporated other designs without permission then used legal and financial firepower to dictate license agreements. The people afraid of AMD being on top, tend to ignore the illegal practices Intel leveraged to suppress competition. AMD simply aren't an IBM or Intel bullying the whole market but more in the large player category which wax and wane depending on success against competition. The monopolists create a supine industry where true innovation struggles to gain rewards.

    Fumbled.. the... bag? They went on a 6 year bender, fell into a ditch, and are now rambling at the billboards at the main intersection in town. They laid off their mobile chip division nearly ten years ago. They just entered the GPU market two years ago. They are still using process node machinery that's "last gen" and are still another 2 years away from making anything that's proper EUV.

    Its not just bad intelligence decisions. I think the AMD 9000 chips indicates we are at the limit of current technologies. I think chip makers have known this for a couple years and they are just making up new products, hoping that we don't notice.

      My issue with Zen 5 is what many others have with it - the price points they chose for the new CPUs. Cutting power usage is great, but many people don't care about it, especially when a 7900X is $360 and a 9900X is $500. The performance doesn't reflect the price increase. If they released at the same price as Zen 4, I doubt most people would have had an issue with them.

      I had looked into that and it sounds like AMD has got quite an issue on their hands with this one. It looks like the vulnerability goes back more than a decade. I looked at AMD's site and they don't plan to fix the issue for the Ryzen 3000 series. That's going to be a bad look if they don't change their course on that. The issues with Intel is a chance for AMD to look good, and they could fumble that if they don't help their customers.

I also did a scan with Windows Defender and nothing was shown, I also tried ESET and did a computer scan and an Efi scan and nothing was shown, also no error 7032 or 3002. Just to add, I also did diskpart clean all before installing Windows 11

      Not having those efi files, nor the errors, are good signs. Also, major AV providers, Defender included, have been updated to detect this malware. I'm not sure what your mobo model is, but if it was made within the past 3-5 years, it probably got a firmware update. That was determined to be the sure way to patch this vulnerability out.

If you're looking for a local storage option, 2FAS is a solid choice. You could also have several options in case something happens with one of them. The only thing that'll be annoying is switching away from Authy, as they don't have an export tokens option. You'll need to disable 2FA on all accounts and set them up again.
