Chopping 2022 corn silage
We've finally finished our corn silage video (only a few months late!)! Overall, the yields were good, although we lost acres in spring from standing water. Because that field borders a swamp, it was still wet in fall and that made it challenging for the trucks and tractors.

2nd cut & Compost pack
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
It's been awhile, so we start by showing milking. We are finishing our 2nd cut silage bales and it's going better than last time. We will also give you an update on how the compost bedding pack is working out. Trying to wrap and haul bales
มุมมอง 3882 ปีที่แล้ว
This year has been incredibly wet and making feed has been a huge challenge. It's been too wet to cut and the feed is getting old. No matter what we do, we are making ruts on a newly seeded field of alfalfa and that's not good... Facebook @RichLaneFarms Instagram @RichLaneFarms Twitter @MbRichLaneFarms
Seeding the millet and playing in mud
มุมมอง 4322 ปีที่แล้ว
Back at the end of June, we finally got the millet seeded and harrowed. Then we tried rolling the field of millet and alfalfa to push down the rocks. The field was still quite wet and it didn't work out great. We also update you on the Outstanding Young Farmer nomination. Facebook @richlanefarms Twitter @MbRichLaneFarms Instagram @richlanefarms
Breaking it down - We start a compost bedding pack
มุมมอง 17K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Due to our harsh winter, we used WAYYYY more straw than anticipated and we have almost run out. With the drought there is really no straw out there to be bought (at least not the round bales that we need). We've been tossing around the idea of doing a compost pack in summer but were nervous about high cell counts in the high heat. Well, the situation being what it is has given us the push to ta...

Preparing the Farm for Winter
มุมมอง 8022 ปีที่แล้ว
Cows themselves seem to handle cold just fine, it's buildings and equipment that have the trouble. And in Manitoba, we see our fair share of frigid temperatures. So, now that it's cold, we have a few jobs to get everything ready for the deep freeze. Video 31 Facebook @richlanefarms Instagram @richlanefarms Twitter @MbRichLaneFarms
Weaning Beef Calves

Winter is here, and that means it's time to wean beef calves. We already put the quiet wean nose flaps in a week ago and it is time to pull them out and separate the cows from the calves. We've used nose flaps for a few years and have really noticed a positive effect on calves health at weaning time. Follow along as we get this job checked off the to-do list! Video 30. Less Cows!

The time has come for the extra cows we were milking to go on to their new home! It was a good experience, we learned a lot, but now it's time for things to go back to normal. Before loading them, we needed to do an epic sort after milking to divide our cows from theirs. A few loads, and it was all done. We know they will do great at their new barn! Herd Health with the Vet

Join us as we do our bi-monthly herd health with our local Veterinarian, Mark. To keep our cows healthy and at their best, we have an excellent team in place. Preparing a new dairy cow pen, and measuring for silage piles
มุมมอง 8872 ปีที่แล้ว
We have a lot of dairy cows calving soon and they can't all fit in the barn close-up pen. So, we have to clean up the heifer pen to get it ready to hold dry cows. Manure needs to be hauled, fresh bedding put in, and cows vaccinated and sorted. In the midst of all that, we need to measure to see if the corn silage pile will fit in the feed yard. It's very full at this time of year so we hope it ...
Fall Straw Run: Stacking our Year's Supply of Straw Bales
มุมมอง 4473 ปีที่แล้ว
It's that time of year when we get our year's supply of straw delivered. Then, it needs to be unloaded and stacked somewhere on the farm. We have less space this year because of the outside straw pack, so that will be more challenging. We also pause to wrap our oats from the epic fail video. That was a surprise to actually get enough feed to bother wrapping! Video 24. Facebook @richlanefarms Tw...
Installing a water hydrant for the Calves
มุมมอง 3653 ปีที่แล้ว
Up until now, we have watered our weaned calves using homemade troughs and a garden hose. But, that was getting to be a bit of a pain as the hose always seemed to be needed at the same time as milk truck driver doing pickups. So, we bit the bullet and trenched in a water line to simplify things. Video 23 Facebook @richlanefarms Twitter @MbRichLaneFarms Instagram @richlanefarms

    G'day from Quebec! I'm a small dairy farmer and just recently saw your videos. This one with your compost -bedded pack was exactly what I was looking for. Have you had any trouble finding the right kind of sawdust for your pack? Also, do you think if the straw was chopped fine enough, you would get the same great results as with the sawdust (low cell count and good composting of the pack)? Thanks and have a great day 😊!

  • @kevenhiemie

    I don't know much at all about dairy farming. I farm Christmas tree, pumpkins, have a degree in horticulture and own a landscape business. I do know compost though. What you're doing with the bedding pack is cool. I was just wondering if maybe using a compact tractor with a tiller would be more efficient. Less fuel, less hrs on your big expensive tractors. Tilling the pack would fluff it up more, provide more oxygen for it to break down and release more heat and steam. Just a random thought I had watching your TH-cam video on a late Saturday night. Now Subscribed.✌️

    • @thebigsmallfarmer1670
      @thebigsmallfarmer1670 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, thanks for your comment! You are most likely right about using a smaller tractor regarding compaction and fuel efficiency. We are a really small farm and this is our "small" tractor. We use a skid steer for any compact work and it isn't very suited to doing the compost bedding. With such a small fleet of equipment, we can't always match the job to the equipment perfectly so we have to compromise. Great comment though! Anyone looking to do a similar pack could take your suggestion on board.

    Does it need to have so many layers to accomplish the wrap? It was 100% covered in 8 rotations but continued on to make 21 full turns. Seems a bit excessive, but maybe the film is too thin and weak for protection with just the 8 turns that completely covered it?

    • @SlyFoxl
      @SlyFoxl ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, 100% coverage doesnt mean anything. you want it to be fully airtight. even after it has sagged abit. any leak will lead to mold and loss of forage quality overall. and its counted in nnumber of full layers. for a long time it was standard to run 6 layers on silage bales here in my parts of norway but last few years thats grown to 8 layers to be sure and prevent quality loss. 7 layers on our combi baler that has 2 "satelites" is 16 rounds (8 layers = 8+8 rounds and we add 1 more round to get that halfway around before it counts) note that the satelites spins around the bale and not the other way around so not 1:1 compared to this style of wrapper. and this is almost controversial but hay makers around here apply from 12 to 16layers of wrap each haybale. partly to be 100% of airleaks etc but also to make em able to survive handling multiple in logistics regarding sale and transport and to still be good 1y later. standard filmwrap thickness is 25my, atleast here but you can get down to 19my. personally i prefer 21my as this is enough in my experience and i get a few hundred meters more pr roll which equals more bales before running out. thickness has nothing to do with airleak, but a little bit with restinant vs scuffs and they can be "pre" stretched abit more too. its whatever suits your conditions and needs really. theres 2 11y old vids on my channel where you can also see it. poorly made ones ik but i was testing it out, also was doing widefilm /film on film back then too as the few first ones. th-cam.com/video/XPJ7smCzwpA/w-d-xo.html heres a video a friend of mine made when he was driving with us during silage ^^

    The Kuhn Company that makes them round balers is owned by the Swiss Company BUCHER Industries in Niederweningen Switzerland, I have been to the BUCHER factory in Switzerland and got a tour there until the early 2000s they still made farm equipment in that plant. and they got a museum of almost all of there equipment they made over the 200 years the company exists. The Rotary Hay rakes that Kuhn makes and other companies was invented by Bucher same with the conditioners on the Disc mowers however the plant in Switzerland was to small for the large numbers ordered so Kuhn and Fahr where the first two companies that got the rights to make em. great video keep em comin'
