Less Cows!

  • The time has come for the extra cows we were milking to go on to their new home! It was a good experience, we learned a lot, but now it's time for things to go back to normal. Before loading them, we needed to do an epic sort after milking to divide our cows from theirs. A few loads, and it was all done. We know they will do great at their new barn! Video 29

No matter how many cows you have you get attached with handling them every day. Appears you are parting with some nice cows.

Question...a while back yiu had a question from a viewer about individual stalls for the cows ....now wondering if it really makes a difference between that and your set up if they are properly bedded and taken care of ....such as your girls appear to be???

Our barn is sized so that if we wanted to one day we could put in a row of head to head stalls. The only reason we would consider doing that is because our bedding cost is very high. Stalls would require a fraction of the bedding, but we would have to change our manure handling system which wouldn't be cheap either. The bedding pack is great for cow comfort!

Just wondering how high is your barn at the peak and do you have a ridge vent? We have a bedded pack heifer barn that looks exactly like your barn on days without a wind the air can get stale in it.look forward to the next video.Merry Christmas.

Hi Melanie! The barn is 14ft to the bottom of the rafters and 20ft to the peak I believe. There is no ridge vent. We have to very large ceiling fans that run 24/7 to keep the air fresh. During winter the fans turn very slow, just enough to move the air which helps keep the humidity down. Merry Christmas and thanks for watching!
