Can you read Spanish? I recommend you: Pepita Jiménez by Juan Valera.❤
Your mum looks a lot like you and I was pleased to meet her 💜
Thanks!
I loved hearing your thoughts on Our Mutual Friend. I've never heard that perspective before so I enjoyed that!
Thanks! I've been a bit worried that my judgment was too hasty.
While I enjoy your videos, it’s always an added bonus when you film with your mom. A few of these were already on my TBR, but your mom added a few more to my list. Thanks for sharing! 💗
Thanks so much!
This video was a random You Tube recommendation today and am I glad it was! I absolutely loved you and your mom (I'm also a woman of an uncertain age). Some great recommendations - I've read them all except the Sansom books and the Peter Mayle books. Off the top of my head I'd recommend the Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series - she and her husband are Egyptologists working in the Victorian era. The books are cozy and lighthearted. I also really enjoy Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series; they take place post WWI, as well as Charles Todd's Bess Crawford series. Maisie was a nurse in WW1 while Bess is still working as one in the books. Jacqueline Winspear is what I call a "wordsmith" - her writing is really beautiful.
Thanks so much and welcome! My parents do love the Maisie Dobbs series, but I will recommend the other two.
I buddy-read "Thomas Cromwell" with a friend before we went to England last month. The book presents a balanced picture of the man. For someone so concerned for promulgating the reformed faith, I can't believe some of his decisions and actions. A very detailed biography--make a bit too much so--but overall I recommend it. I may pick up some of the other books presented!
Great job but unfortunate title.
I second the recommendation of Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall. I got so enthused about what I learned I bent every ear in my friends/family circle. I got it from the library but returned it and bought my own copy because I wanted it for future reference and re-reads. His points are easy to follow and he connects the dots of information we already knew but never put together.
Lovely video. I have Wolf Hall on my Kindle, but I wonder if I should read a biography of Thomas Cromwell first.
I could honestly see it going both ways. I wouldn't go for the mammoth Diarmuid McCullough book, though. I feel like that one would be a bit overwhelming. I was able to piece enough of Wolf Hall together because of all the other Tudor reads I've done since I was eight, but if you don't have that background a brief biography might be handy.
I love your mum's reading tastes! I either have read all these or they are on my TBR. Dan Jones is fabulous. He makes history so accessible and I agree with your mum that he makes these people from history come alive. Love your channel. Cheers Toni from Australia 🇦🇺
Once again, so many great recommandations from your mother! I have Tracy Borman's biography of Cromwell and The private lives of the Tudor on my TBR. I have a feeling that the new Mirror and the Light series is going to motivate me to read the Cromwell biography soon. There are just so many books about the Tudors! I have never read anything about Charles I and Charles II they don't interest me as much as the Tudors, even though I should feel some connection to Charles II since he spent some time in France before the Restoration.
The 1600s have never called to me as much, either, but apparently Antonia Fraser makes them a bit more interesting. :D
Hi from Australia! I absolutely loved this video so much. My TBR is now about to bury me but in a good way. 😊 At the moment I'm reading Crypt by Professor Alice Roberts and its fascinating.
Thanks so much and welcome! Crypt sounds interesting...
Too much monarchy for my taste
I, too, have an unhealthy interest in the Tudors! 😆 I'm also fascinated with Thomas Cromwell and really enjoyed the book by Tracy Borman. 🤓 Going to have to see if I can find Tudor England: A History by Lucy Wooding! Thank you both so much! 📚
Welcome to the fold. :)
Some great books. I am really looking forward to the Henry V by Dan jones. I love his books also. Is your mom on Goodreads? My reading interests are like hers and I would like to keep with all she is reading
I love hearing your mom talk about history books.
Equiano's book sounds so interesting. I'd love to read it one day. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
So many great books! I remember studying Hedda Gabler at theatre school and playing Hedda in an acting class. It was such a fun role to take on. I hope you enjoy all these amazing sounding reads!
Nice! I'll now picture you when I get around to reading it. :)
Love all the English history bks
I love that you did another video on your mom’s favorite books! I added Prisoners of Geography to my TBR.
I have really enjoyed seeing your mother talking about the books she has read. I have added them to my list. I hope to see more of her recommendations in the future.
Great! Thanks so much.
Your mum inspires me to read non-fiction.
Wonderful! Thank you so much.
I always love hearing from your mother on her favorite books! As a fellow non fiction fan, this was delightful ❤
Thanks so much!
Oohh this was lovely. Haven´t done a tag for quite a while som might give it a go soon 🤭Jonathan Strange and Mrs. Norrell is on my TBR! Have a lovely birthday! 🥳
I'm so glad you found the tag and did it to celebrate your birthday! Enjoy your birthday and read excellent books! 🎉😊
Thank you!
This is a fun tag! I have been told I need to watch the Poldark series. Should I read the books first? I have this Susanna Clark book on my shelf but have yet to pick it up. Maybe this should be my book for Big Book summer next year.
Do it! In terms of Poldark, watch it alongside the series (each season of the show covers two books) - well, up to Season 5. I think Season 5 could have been good, but due to logistical things, it was very different from Book 8. Definitely pick up Jonathan Strange at any point - it's so worth it.
I love this tag, Heather! I got the entire Poldark series for Christmas last year and have yet to pick up the first book. I think you've inspired me to finally start it 😂
Do it! Watch it alongside the series (each season of the show covers two books) - well, up to Season 5. I think Season 5 could have been good, but due to logistical things, it was very different from Book 8.
Hi Heather, my other social media platform is Linkedin. Do you have a profile there?
Gorgeous books, all the Poldark novels are enjoyable, mind you, Winston Graham is just a genius with all his novels. I HAVE been listening to the Barsetshire novels on audio for a change. Timothy West narrating is a delight. Love Emma too.
I read two books for Victober, but only finished one, The Woman in White. I'm still reading The Framley Parsonage. I loved The Woman in White and am enjoying Framley Parsonage, The rest of my reading was spooky with one exception of my last book, though I finished it November 1. It's hard to pick a favorite, because it was a really good month and I enjoyed all my reads. October 1. Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill 2. The Woman in White by: Wilkie Collins 3. The SpellBook of Katrina Van Tassel by Alyssa Palombo 4. Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow 5. The Tall Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe 6. The Omen by David Seltzer 7. John Adams by David McCullough
Nice! I liked The Woman in White, too. I've always meant to read a David McCullough, but I've always ended up being too intimidated (I don't care too much about American history. Hamilton's the only reason that I read a Ron Chernow book, either).
@@freshparchment Yeah, if you're not a American history fan it might not interest you. I think that's the only thing McCullough writes. What history topic interests you?
@@jackiesliterarycorner Some biographies, British/European history...
I would like to read of that history. I have some but not a lot. What do you recommend?
@@jackiesliterarycorner For starters, watch my nonfiction bookshelf tours or any of my nonfiction recommendations with my mother.
Thank you for shouting out the podcast and my channel! I can't believe I missed this when it came out 🤍 I loved your comments on Mrs. Elton and Elizabeth Elliot-I haven't covered either of those characters much yet. Lucy Steele and Isabella are pretty terrifying! I do think the financial pressures they face influences their behavior, but it’s no excuse for their cruelty. Such a great video!
Thank YOU so much for inspiring it and your very kind commentary. How did Austen capture such specific yet timeless characters?
I enjoyed a Trollope stand alone called the Three Clerks about corruption in the Civil Service and read/ listened to the wonderful Timothy West on Doctor Thorne. I also read the group novel, the Doctor's Wife, watched Lady Windermere's Fan and read The Woman in White and Three Men in a Boat. Oh and Scenes From Clerical Life to fit Kate's challenge of something revolving around religion - so all in all a great month!
Ooh, I need to get to Scenes from Clerical Life now. And I'll add The Three Clerks to my list, too - it sounds great!
I only read The haunted hotel among those but wasn't thrilled either. In Victober, I read The woman in white (loved), Trollope's Framely parsonage and Miss MacKenzie (loved) and Oliver Twist (liked, but not loved). I have Trollope's complete works on my tablet, so I have quite a long way to go 😁
Nice! I'll get to reading some on ebook, but I've been quite lucky in finding a lot of physical copies so far. I felt the same about Oliver Twist, too - it was OK (perhaps spoiled by watching Oliver! in chorus class at 9 years old).
I completely understand that you did not feel very invested in the short Trollope, because I felt the same with the Warden: it's too short and we don't have time to get into the story. I'm so glad you enjoyed He knew he was right, which I remember as a very strong Trollope with many interesting characters. I had a good Victober. Among other things, I finally read Agnes Grey and really enjoyed Doctor Wortle's School by Trollope.
Very nice! Yet another Trollope I want to try - I hear great things. When I finish the Palliser novels, I'll probably listen to Doctor Wortle.
You got through plenty. Best wishes and happy reading.
I read He Knew He was Right years ago and I cannot forget it--it is so powerful. I can imagine that listening to Our Mutual Friend on a first read would be very confusing. You may want to watch the BBC TV production with Keeley Hawes and David Morrissey (as Bradley Headstone--fantastic performance), which might clear up some of the confusion. Also Dickens went out of his way to present Mr Riah as a positive Jewish character, and I'm sorry you didn't feel that on your reading. I found both Our Mutual Friend & He Knew He was Right on DVD through my library system.
Dickens did give Mr. Riah great moments, but the refusal of Fledgeby to change his attitude really rankled me (especially given the current rise in anti-Semitism). That sort of stubborn racism really got to me. I do love Keeley Hawes and David Morrissey, but I may wait a bit before seeking out the adaptation to let my opinions and emotions settle.
Hi Heather, I appreciated your honesty. I've mentioned my Classics page cap 600 to you so The Struggles of Brown Jones and Robinson is going on my TBR. I'll read the Trollope standalones that you and Gina recommend. My Victober read was The Semi Detached House by Emily Eden which I enjoyed and four stared. Her other book The Semi Attached Couple's on my TBR too. My Oct favorites were cozier and MG fantasy, Rewitched , The House with Chicken Legs and The Lost Child of Lytchford.
Excellent! I'm looking forward to reading the Semi-Detached House and Semi-Attached Couple at some point.
The Louise Allen looks so fun! Claire Tomalin's book sounds like my cup of tea, I read a few biographies of hers and it would be interesting to learn about her own life. In November I will be reading Paula Byrne's Perdita, which I have long meaning to get to. I would also like to start a reread of The Count of Monte Cristo (watching the new French film this summer has made me want to reread it), I hope I will get to it. Happy November reading!
Perdita was so good! I hope you enjoy it. I have to see if I can get that new Monte Cristo film here in the US...
Hi Heather for my second NFN I'll be reading Lost in Wonder an Anglican spirituality book. I'll also be continuing my Autumnal reading.
I need to get my hands on a copy of Toast and Marmalade. My bucket list includes going to her factory and getting at least one of her gorgeous mugs and a nice tea towel. I didn't realize she had a book, too! Love it!❤☕️📖
I'm so glad you enjoyed Montgomery Hurst! It sounds lovely.
As always, your videos are cozy and give me so many great ideas of books to read!
Thanks so much!
May enjoy "Margaret Hamilton From Cleveland Ohio to the Land of Oz" as a happy biography. Details her journey from kindergarten teacher to her true passion as a theatrical actress (and of course the Wicked Witch).
That would be fun!
So many fun things! I love the My Other Home is Pemberley tea towel 😊
My appreciation for opera continues to grow because of what I am learning from you!
We definitely have to watch this version when it comes out on the app. It's gorgeous!
I loved hearing about your growing up at the library!
Timon meerkat name
I love that you and Marissa go book shopping often! You guys look so sweet in the photo 💜 I haven’t read Giovanni’s Room but I have read If Beale Street Could Talk and I enjoyed it, I think you might like it better based on your specific criterion. Los Empeños de la Casa sounds so fun! It looks like it is a play, a comedy of mistaken identities. Not sure how dirty it might be but it’s definitely secular. I love fashion plates too! The cover and illustrations of your edition of The Twelve Dancing Princesses look so gorgeous. I need to try Balzac too and The Odd Women is on my tbr as well. I’ve read Middlemarch twice and love it, I need to read more from her. Fanny and The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher sound really interesting. What a great and varied haul!
Thanks so much! Especially grateful for confirming my Sor Juana and James Baldwin theories.
This opera sounds so fun! I really enjoyed the Coppelia ballet so I feel like I would enjoy this too. I love the idea of reading Hoffmann’s short stories as well. I’m excited to check out the musical moments you linked. Thanks for your wonderful introduction!
Thank you! It will be on PBS' Great Performances soon, I hope, so you can see it afterwards. :)
@@freshparchment Oh that would be great, I'll be on the lookout!
Swan Song is an excellent read. It's really stayed with me over the years. I did enjoy Scoop but it's very much of it's place and time. Probably one of the better of his books to read for somebody who hasn't had much joy with Waugh yet. I would also recommend Decline and Fall, even if you don't like Scoop!
Thank you so much!
