Hi, this is my TH-cam channel dedicated to my photography, video and time-lapse experiences and technical knowledge.
Sports Photography - What's In My Bag?
A question I’m asked quite often is what gear do I use for shooting sports coverage especially from those who are just staring out in sports photography.
Over the last year I’ve managed to get accreditation to many large sports events and there’s a lot of expensive gear in my bag, but don’t let that put you off because you can still do this on a smaller budget. It’s just knowing the right gear and correct camera set up.
Hopefully this helps anyone who’s new to sports photography and is unsure of the right type of gear to buy. Like I said you don’t have to have to have exactly what I have and also, you don’t need to get the very latest mirrorless technology, you can still do this with older and more budget friendly equipment.
Please take the time to view another video I made that walks through the entire sport photography workflow from the set up of your metadata, files names and folders, ftp connections and code replacement descriptions, to actually shooting the action and then uploading through FTP to your clients ready to be used for editorial use. This is all done with a software program called PhotoMechanic.
Thanks again for watching don’t forget to like, share and subscribe and stay tuned for more videos.

Why I Own The RF400mm f/2.8 lens. 4 Years With the Canon R Mount
มุมมอง 4.7K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The 400mm f2.8 is for professional sports, action and wildlife, and is essential for low light demanding situations that require a fast and bright aperture. The 400mm f2.8. It’s a fixed focal length lens meaning I can't zoom in or out, it’s fixed at 400mm, so you have to be very selective of your subject when deciding to get this out of the case. It’s also insanely expensive at around $12,000 b...

The 70-200 is part of my kit for its versatility and for fast action situations such sports, wildlife, but it's also a great lens for portraits and even for some landscapes. Canon released their updated f2.8 RF70-200 way back in 2019. It was slightly controversial at the time as they removed the internal zoom feature found on most 70-200 lenses. But this has made the lens much lighter at around...

Hi Matthew, I am thinking OM 100-400 for Safari or 40-150 f2.8 + x2 converter, what is your suggestion? and what is the another focal length lens you would like to suggest for Safari.
Hi Andy. I think they would both be more than good enough. The advantage with the 40-150mm is the constant aperture of f2.8 (5.6 full frame equivalent). With the 2x converter it'll give you a huge focal distance of 160-600mm at f5.6 (f11 full frame equivalent). However, the 100-400mm is a full frame equivalent of 200-800mm with a variable aperture of f5-6.3 (f10-13 FFE). There's not much in it to be honest. The 40-150 has that PRO build quality and with the 2x converter is probably more versatile. If budget is a concern then just use your mobile camera for any wide shots. If you're able to check the pre-owned section or discount sales in store for an extra body and cheap wide lens such as an 8mm or 12mm MFT lens (16mm or 24mm FFE). The Olympus and Panasonic lenses are so small and cheap you'll hardly notice them when travelling. Hope that helps and enjoy the Safari trip.
@ thank you Matthew!👍🏻
Thanks for sharing your photography knowledge
My pleasure! Thanks for viewing.
Hi Matthew, just wondering which laptop plateau you are using and how do you attach this to your bag?
Thoughts on 15-35 vs 10-20? Wide angle is my only hole (although I do have 16 f2.8) in my lens lineup?
I’ve not used the 10-20mm but I know it’s an f4 lens. For wide shots of sports stadiums I’m usually at f8 so f4 is definitely not an issue. With the 15-35 I’m also usually panning sequentially in portrait mode to get those super wide looking shots so by using a 10mm aspherical lens would save a lot of time. Hope that helps.
@ thank you!
Hi Matthew thanks for the great Video. I’m flying to South Africa in February and looking for the ideal equipment to bring. But I still feel kinda indecisive. I own a Sony A7 mark 3 and a Tamron 28-75 f2.8. I’m currently looking between the Sony 70-200 f2.8, Sony 100-400, Sony 200-600. or I’ll scrap my tamron for most of the day and just run the Sigma 60-600. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Sebastian. The 60-600 would probably cover the focal range you need and as you’ll be in a vehicle you won’t be carrying it everywhere so the weight won’t be an issue. Anything wider than 60mm you could just use your phone camera if you really had to. If there is time then maybe you could change lenses to go wider.
This is a really well done video. I’ve shot sports for years and still learned from your video. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I learned that I’ve shot several games at 1.6 crop by mistake. Have no idea how that happened but if I hadn’t gone through your video I wouldn’t have noticed. Unfortunate bc I’m not happy with that. Fortunate bc it is now fixed. Quick question. You mention in another comment about changing modes when a different situation occurs quickly. Do you find that easy to do? Thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to view the video and for the comment. It's a constant learning curve. I can change modes fairly quickly but it does take some practice. It's really down to muscle memory and being familiar with your camera. If i change cameras i do struggle a bit.
love this video and helped a lot. did I saw this correctly, that you have all the A-League-Teams in one sheet for the code replacements? I made lists for every single team but I guess it is much more convenient to have on list with all teams (and of course different codes for teams with the same initials) and also the basic stuff like referee, goalkeeper, forward and so on
Hi Thanks so much for the comment. I usually keep all the teams in one file and just make sure they have different codes. That way i'm not likely to have the wrong file loaded and have consistent set of codes . But it doesn't really matter. It's up to you how you do things.

Have you tried the focus where you point your eye?
Hi John. I have a few times and i found it to be a bit unreliable. Maybe i need to calibrate it better.
Very nice video, a lot of work
Thank you very much!
Terrific video, if I wanted to configure C1 for these settings and C2 for street photography/general purpose travel, what changes would you make in settings, autofocus, etc.?
Thanks for the comment. I think for street or travel photography i would be trying to control the ISO to be as low as possible to get cleaner images. The autofocus settings might work better in the general purpose mode.
Great Info. I have been using PM for filing of images. Is great tool for photographer.
Glad it was helpful!
Very Good info. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent tutorial. When you edit the photos in PS, do you modify the original image? That code replacement file looks hectic 😀
Hi Matthew. I would edit the original file but then while sending the image via FTP PM then makes a copy which is a scaled down or deduced size version. You could set up so you're working in a way which is non-destructive to the original image. But you'd still have the originals on the memory cards.
@mstarling79 thank you mate. I guess speed is the important factor when you have to file. And as you said you’ve still got the original on memory cards. Your Photomechanic template looks amazing
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
I own the canon RF 400mm 2.8 L IS USM lens and am looking for a hard shell case. Could you recommend one? Thanks!
Yes, definitely. I bought the Nanuk 960 waterproof case. That seems to be working well so far. But the Pelican cases are also very good.
20:58 I'm neophyte in sports photography, but what are those?
They are remote trigger devices for shooting on a camera that is positioned remotely
@@mstarling79 thank u sirrr
Thoroughly explained and jam packed with goodies!
Thanks so much for watching
You could speed up filling in the left side of your Metadata Template by typing {Event) {Date} {Location} etc. in your standard text. That will generate the text you have entered in the Event and Location section. In addition to that include in your conversion table Team1 and Team 2 and use in your caption /Team1/ and /Team2/ . Same for the other parts like Headline and Keywords. In English you have only "the" and no male or female form (like in Dutch etc) so you always have the right text without any retyping in the left part of the template.
Thanks for the extra information
What bag is that? Looks good.
That is the Neewer 2-in-1 Rolling Camera Bag
Do you think a Nikon 500mm f4 would fit in with a body attached?
It would probably fit without the camera attached. Might be a squeeze with camera attached and also with the lens hood.
I bought this lens a few weeks ago and replaced immediately the lens foot by the Leofoto CFC-01 which has an arca swiss foot . And that's a big improvement ! Canon still don't get it !
Thanks for the comment. Yes i agree, Canon should give the option for an arca swiss style base plate or lens foot.
I have 3 X 1DXll, an EF 400mm 2.8 L IS MKll, an EF 70-200mm L IS MKll, and an EF 17-40mm 4.0-and I don't even want to upgrade. That was a great video, though.

Awesome review thank you

I have the 200-800. Its basically like having the TC on the 100-500 all the time. Very sharp lens, despite not being L. Great value considering the price.
Thanks for the comment
thanks. can you tell me about inbody image stabilization? After i configured my manual mode, electronic shutter, etc, i d´ont longer have the option for IS inbody image stabilisation. THE ONE THAT YOU HAVE IN THE RED MENU, NR.7 (i had this option when i bought the camera, before i changed configurations). I use a canon 100-400 lens with image stabilisation , and i have IS on lends activated. ¿Is it because when we use lenses with image stabilisation, then the inbody IS, is already on by default, and thats why we don´t see it in the menu? I mention that, when i use another lens, without image stabilisation, then i do have that IS configuration option, in the red menu. thank you again
Hi Mike. I believe its because the IS is always on if the lens has IS built-in. You turn the IS off by using the switch on the lens. Unless it's for video then the option is available again.
@@mstarling79 thank you. so, to swich on/off inbody IS stabilisation, i do it from the lens button.
Great info, thankyou. 😊
@@gregorydobson4307 thanks for the comment. Much appreciated.
Excellent!!!!!!
Many thanks!
Excellent tutorial, it was interesting to see the order of operation in this, aperture, then ISO, then Shutter speed. Shame about the flood lights. Will check out the Lr vid too
Thanks so much for watching
@@mstarling79 ok so I added a Timelapse setting to a custom mode on my R7 but the custom controls are global. My studio shoot I had to reset the max and min limits of shutter speed lol
Oh yeah baby! Great video! I wish Canon allowed a mode dial for a “user profile” then I can create and select “Sports” as I use 2 custom saves, or “Astro” or “Studio” just how many profiles we want to create to expand the 3 custom saves. Also why not move the custom saves to a button & Q menu then we are not limited to 3 custom saves I assume this could too work in Fv mode as you explained P but keeping all in Auto and maybe limiting the aperture to keep the dof under control. Why the 99 shot limit Canon. Come on lol
Thanks for the comment. You made some good points. Let's hope Canon are watching.
Great info here. I’m totally on the fence about this lens purely based on that f/7.1… my ef 100-400 ii does a great job on my R6 ii, but f/5.6 is already giving me quite high iso values at times. The R6 ii is excellent at high iso but obviously we want a cleaner image. I’m not sold on this lens… especially when other manufacturers can produce a super tele with f/6.3 at 600mm.

This is really cool - My clients use google drive to see the sports photos I take for them.. will google drive show my captions that I write? Or do I need to use some other means\way to give my client the photos so they can see the captions? Btw great video mate I am going to get photom
Hi thanks for the comment. One metadata has been added to the images then it will stay until it's been deleted or modified within a program that allows access sot the data. I've not tried it with google drive but i'm sure there would be a way to add data with PM and for you clients to see that data within google drive.
I just need to know where did you get this lens coat for the 400mm, please.
Hi thanks for the comment - they can be found here - photographyblinds.com/collections/camshield
Two quick questions. 1. If PM is only ingesting locked photos, how do you ingest from the goal cam? Do you go through the photos on the camera before inserting the SD card into the computer for PM to ingest? 2. Do you not edit your photos before sending them off? I don't mean cropping, but adding contrast, adjusting highlighst and shadows, maybe adding some clarity and/or dehaze etc. to make the photos pop a bit more? Other than that, thank you for a great video 🙂
Hi Patrick. Thanks for the comment. There isn't an easy way for selecting photos. You either scroll back through the camera and select the ones worth locking or keeping or transfer the whole lot on to the laptop and then drag and drop the best shots inn to photo mechanic directly, then apply the metadata template manually. You can do any edit you want within the image editor. Sometimes i may adjust the exposure, contrast and saturation etc. It really does depend on you. You could shoot RAW if you preferred to and then do a full edit with shadows and highlights. If you're at 12800 ISO the you'll probably need to apply some noise reduction if you start to tinker around with shadows and black areas . If i have 30-40 photos to go through this could be quite time consuming, which is why i generally stick to jpeg and try and get the most accurate exposure in camera.
@@mstarling79 My workflow is a bit different. I shoot both jpeg and RAW (more on that in a bit). RAWs are for editing after the game. I tag my photos with 1 *(star) in camera during the game for keepers. When the game is finished, I put in the SD card to the PC, then open the SD card in PM and go through the images, just to ensure I got every photo I want and need tagged with 1 *. THEN I do the ingest on the 1* tagged photos. After ingesting I go through the photos again in PM to add the names of the players/staff relevant to the photos using code replacements. Then I import all photos into Lightroom Classic and applying my preset. Do some final touches and then export to send them off. I do not need to send full-size photos during the game. And I take photos for the team directly, therefore I do not need to send any photos to a third party. During the game I simply transfer photos (jpegs) from the camera to my phone and do a quick edit in Lightroom on my phone. Then send it to the media team in the stances who share a photo on social media. These photos are fairly low quality but it's quick, easy and very usable on SoMe. Regarding the editing question, I just noticed that you only did some cropping but not any touch-ups in regards to adjusting highlights, shadows, contrast etc.
The fact that with this and the 2x you can achieve the same focal length as a $21,000 lens, on the same camera system, still leaves me bonkers!
This and the 24-240 would be the perfect travel combo
It would be a great set up and also cost effective. Thanks for the comments.
Excellent explanation. Thanks alot for patiently explaining on this mode. Will definitely save it on my R5 and use it. Thanks again. Glad i stumbled on this video of urs.
Thanks for the comment. Glad it has been of some help. Good luck with the R5.
Which L-bracket do you use?
Hi thanks for the comment. I use smallrig mostly but also have one made by Niceyrig both compatible with the R5 and R6. The screw holes are universal sizes. I have another smallrig L plate cage for the R3 also.
ONE spare battery for the R5 and R6? I suppose if you shoot almost completely with the R3 then the low use on the R5 and R6 obviate the need to swap batteries but for photographing high school (American) football I always have four charged backup batteries for my R6 and R5 (two for the R6 which has two batteries in the vertical grip and two for the R5 sans vertical grip).
Hi Adam. Thanks for the comment. It's probably worth bearing in mind that your football games in the US are around 3 hours long! That's quite a long time out in the field. Our football and rugby games here are only around 90 minutes long. It's only during some Cricket games when i need to start to think about changing batteries but i would leave one on charge and then use a powerbank in the field to charge the cameras, as well as the M1 MacBook, through USB C Power Delivery. The R3 is generally fine on one battery with a bit of charge from the powerbank during intervals. But i think i will eventually get a battery grip for the R5.
