- Welcome back to my channel. In this video i'm going to take you through my workflow for sports photography and how i set up my laptop with a software program called Photo Mechanic. A tool that i recommend all sports photographer should purchase as this will save an enormous amount of time when transferring files from the camera, captioning photos, editing and FTP upload.

Two quick questions.
1. If PM is only ingesting locked photos, how do you ingest from the goal cam? Do you go through the photos on the camera before inserting the SD card into the computer for PM to ingest?
2. Do you not edit your photos before sending them off? I don't mean cropping, but adding contrast, adjusting highlighst and shadows, maybe adding some clarity and/or dehaze etc. to make the photos pop a bit more?
Other than that, thank you for a great video 🙂
Hi Patrick. Thanks for the comment. There isn't an easy way for selecting photos. You either scroll back through the camera and select the ones worth locking or keeping or transfer the whole lot on to the laptop and then drag and drop the best shots inn to photo mechanic directly, then apply the metadata template manually. You can do any edit you want within the image editor. Sometimes i may adjust the exposure, contrast and saturation etc. It really does depend on you. You could shoot RAW if you preferred to and then do a full edit with shadows and highlights. If you're at 12800 ISO the you'll probably need to apply some noise reduction if you start to tinker around with shadows and black areas . If i have 30-40 photos to go through this could be quite time consuming, which is why i generally stick to jpeg and try and get the most accurate exposure in camera.

My workflow is a bit different.
I shoot both jpeg and RAW (more on that in a bit).
RAWs are for editing after the game.
I tag my photos with 1 *(star) in camera during the game for keepers.
When the game is finished, I put in the SD card to the PC, then open the SD card in PM and go through the images, just to ensure I got every photo I want and need tagged with 1 *.
THEN I do the ingest on the 1* tagged photos.
After ingesting I go through the photos again in PM to add the names of the players/staff relevant to the photos using code replacements.
Then I import all photos into Lightroom Classic and applying my preset. Do some final touches and then export to send them off.
I do not need to send full-size photos during the game. And I take photos for the team directly, therefore I do not need to send any photos to a third party.
During the game I simply transfer photos (jpegs) from the camera to my phone and do a quick edit in Lightroom on my phone. Then send it to the media team in the stances who share a photo on social media.
These photos are fairly low quality but it's quick, easy and very usable on SoMe.
Regarding the editing question, I just noticed that you only did some cropping but not any touch-ups in regards to adjusting highlights, shadows, contrast etc.
As a very old git brought up on film (and medium / large format film at that) it never ceases to amaze me how automated and speedy this process has become.
I am not one of the dinosaurs who bemoan the passing of film (I will never yearn to use film again) but I do struggle to grasp a lot of the automation and speed with which computerisation has changed the picture taking/delivery of images process.
I'm off to shoot my granddaughters rugby game this evening but they won't be getting any images until either much later tonight or early tomorrow.
The adage of "old dogs and new tricks" often applies to me 😁
A very interesting and thought provoking video. Much appreciated.
Greetings from Wales.
Hi Robert. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. Good luck with the rugby game. Sports photography is more fun when there’s no pressure for submitting photos ☺️
Can’t wait to watch
Thanks!
This is really cool - My clients use google drive to see the sports photos I take for them.. will google drive show my captions that I write? Or do I need to use some other means\way to give my client the photos so they can see the captions? Btw great video mate I am going to get photom
Hi thanks for the comment. One metadata has been added to the images then it will stay until it's been deleted or modified within a program that allows access sot the data. I've not tried it with google drive but i'm sure there would be a way to add data with PM and for you clients to see that data within google drive.
Fabulous software and I use Photomechanic plus and Capture One as my software of choice
Great! thanks for the comment. Capture One is a great option.
Similar set up to myself. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. PhotoMechanic is a huge time saver and should be a consideration for all sports shooters.
Indeed
Very interesting to see how this is done.
Thanks for the comment. Photo Mechanic has been a great investment so far.
@@mstarling79 I'm just a hobbyist. I had no idea there was so much going on behind the scene. So much more than just taking pictures!
