MoonJuice Hikes
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ก.ย. 2012
I'm Breven, trail name "MoonJuice". I went on my very first hike here in Arizona just a few years ago and quickly fell in love with the Arizona desert. Day hikes have turned into backpacking trips with my wife of almost 30 years, and backpacking trips have turned into long distance hiking - completing both the Arizona and Colorado Trails.
My channel features hikes that I enjoy, which consist of real adventures; long, difficult, and away from civilization! You wont find the 2 or 3 mile hikes here that require permits, or guides, or end at a crowded swimming hole. You won't find any of the tourist hikes that tend to get lots of views... I like to go where crowds cannot form! The purpose of these videos is to try and show what its like to backpack long distances (especially if you don't have much experience, like me), and how I find campsites, water etc. Maybe one of these adventures will inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and try something new?
Thanks for checking it out!

Camelback Mountain - Echo Canyon Trail - The Praying Monk
Camelback Mountain is one of the most popular and crowded hiking destinations in Arizona. During good weather on a weekend, its so crowded that hikers often find themselves in a long line of hikers who eventually reach the summit only to find 100 other people already on top trying to get a selfie without 99 hikers in the background. We like to refer to it as the Disneyland Hike.
Located near the heart of Phoenix, its one of the closest hiking areas for the 1.6 million residents. During the cooler temps, Camelback and the nearby Piestewa Peak see hundreds of visitors every day. In addition to those looking to reach the summit (via the Echo Canyon trail on the west end or the Cholla Trail head on the east end), Camelback Mountain has dozens of established sport and trad climbing routes. As beginners, this is a prefect place to practice early in the morning, before the triple digit summer temps hit. We're still learning the ropes, with all of the pun intended, and we're having a blast every step of the way!

Lower Salt River Adventure - Wild Horses, Kayaking & Climbing
มุมมอง 5774 หลายเดือนก่อน
Coon Bluff along the Salt River has been a popular destination for recreation for decades. The name goes back to 1919 when a group of Boy Scouts cooked up a racoon for their parents and told them it was pork - just for laughs. In addition to boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, birdwatching, and other activities, rappelling has also been popular from the eastern side of the bluff. Over the years...
WHAT'S OUT THERE? Solo Backpacking the Eastern Superstition Wilderness

Join me on this long awaited, 3 day backpacking trip in the seldom seen Eastern Superstition Wilderness. Most trails in the Eastern Supes have been basically abandoned since the Woodbury fire destroyed many of the wooded canyons in 2019. With such destruction, the wilderness has reclaimed many miles of the trails in the area, and current info on water sources, camping spots and trail conditions...
Exploring Barks Canyon & The Glory Road - Superstition Wilderness
มุมมอง 7656 หลายเดือนก่อน
If you have ever hiked the Bluff Springs Trail in the Western Superstitions, you've seen Barks Canyon. Barks is sandwiched between the Geronimo Cave Ridgeline and the Bluff Springs Mountain ridgeline, SE of Weaver's Needle. Like Peralta, Barks is a rugged canyon lined with clumps of tall hoodo-type rock formations visible to those who make it up and over Cardiac Hill - the local name given to t...
Carney Springs Waterfall - Rappelling Adventure in the Superstitions
มุมมอง 6527 หลายเดือนก่อน
A chance encounter with a couple of climbers on the summit of Weaver's Needle last weekend, provided insight into a rappelling adventure that begins at Robber's Roost in the western Superstition Wilderness and ends with a 230' rappel down the rarely flowing Carney Springs Waterfall. Along with my my pal Troy Dixon @walkingwithawookie1097 (who we learn is more of a Pink Lady apple guy), we caref...
Exploring West Boulder Canyon - Off Trail in the Superstition Wilderness
มุมมอง 8658 หลายเดือนก่อน
Winter in Arizona is a beautiful time of year to explore the rugged Sonoran Desert. Mild temps and recent rain set the stage for a really interesting off-trail adventure. NOTE: Hiking off trail in any wilderness area is dangerous. While we expected a day hike, we brought enough supplies to stay safe, even if we had to spend a night in the canyon. Despite 2 GPS Rescue devices, when hiking into u...
REVERSE FLATIRON - Superstition Mountains (Massacre Falls to 5024)
มุมมอง 1.1K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Reverse Flatiron refers to an off trail route from Massacre Falls Trailhead, to hilltop 5024, just above the icon Flatiron landmark. This 9.3 mile loop, includes a steep bushwhack, and challenging scramble up 3,360' aeg to 5024'. With no GPS map to download, this "route" is certainly not for beginners. Essentially, its the Siphon Draw Trail, without the trail. Dangerous for experienced hikers, ...
Hiking/Climbing The Praying Hands - Superstition Wilderness

On the Northwestern corner of the Superstitions, there are number of relatively easy hiking trails, with the rocky edge of the Superstition mountains as a backdrop. SCARIEST "HIKE" IN ARIZONA - The Motherlode - Four Peaks Traverse
มุมมอง 3.1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Calling the Motherlode a "hike" is a colossal mistake. This has nothing to do with hiking, other than the short trail that takes you to the base of Brown's peak. From this point, there is no trail until you traverse all 4 peaks and get down. There is no route to follow. No GPS map. This isn't a hike. In fact, it isn't a scramble either. The Motherlode is a death defying traverse across class 4 ...
Superstition Traverse - Canyon Lake to Peralta

There are very few trails in the Western Superstitions that I have not experienced firsthand over the last few years. The Boulder Canyon Trail (from Canyon Lake), the Eastern LaBarge Pool Route, and the 7 mile long Peter's Trail are a few boxes that I have been waiting to check. Trails in the Supes that I have not yet seen, is all the motivation I needed to embark on this weekends adventure. Fo...

What a great adventure, rhanks so much for sharing. Your outro really hits. Thanks for the perspective and reminder of what really matters.
Beven I met you last week East of Lone Pine. I’m looking forward to your video of the trip. Also I hope you show your route.
Congrats!
Amazing having done the lowest to the highest and nice meeting you on the way up and down . David, Sara and Bo!
If I can get up there when I’m 70, I’ll be thrilled! Good meeting you guys. Stay tuned for the big video…
Congrats, man! L2H is a tremendous achievement. Awesome that you were blessed with some peak solitude to cap it off.
It was amazing in all aspects… thanks!
Love it!
Congrats! Looks amazing!
Great job! Thanks for the preview. Did you take the Mountaineers Route or the 100-Switchbacks Route? Can’t wait to see the details in upcoming videos.
The L2H takes the standard route. To be honest, the switchbacks were much more shallow than I expected. After the off trail slog over the Panamint range at 10,000’, Whitney (with its perfectly maintained trail) was a breeze! The end was significantly easier than the beginning. Surprised me.
Extreme Solitude. 2 years for a permit?? Enjoy it, life is short 🤙🤙
Freaking awesome!!!
Wow great job 🎉
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it
Hi there, new subscriber here. Love your videos and content. I'm 62, not in shape, and live about 20 miles from the Superstitions. What would be the easiest 1-2 mike out, then back trails that would get me started in late October or November just to get my feet wet? Thank you for your content.
Hey Pat! I’d recommend downloading a free hiking app like AllTrails. This will really help find trails with the length and difficulty you’re looking for. In the Supes, check out the Treasure Loop (park for free at Jacob’s Crosscut). Also, the Hieroglyphics trail is a good short hike. When you’re ready for a little elevation gain, the Wave Cave and then Peralta Canyon. One step at a time my friend, you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll improve. Happy trails!
16:02 the red eyes were a nice touch.
Caught that eh? That was a creepy hole…
Damn u already wanna make the climb then u start with the Pink Floyd. Now i gotta do it!
Go get it Ralph! If you want me to lead you up, shoot me an email and let’s make a plan!
I cannot express my gratitude for your videos man! They're like trail soulfood when im stuck inside as the Phoenix summer drags on. I love your vibe, the editing, the music, all your trail magic encounters. Where do you get the music from? I cant help but picture you by a campfire recording these each night while on the trail
Wow, thanks Dankah! I don’t have a monetized channel, just trying to capture the vibe of the adventure. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. Found this guitarist on YT…@KfirOchaion. He’s so good. His acoustic stuff fits in well with the adventure vibe. Check him out.
Superb travelogue! 😀 Well filmed , not too long episodes and informative style delivered with great joy 🙏 Looking forward to following in your footsteps in 25 Thanks for posting …
Wow, thanks Paul. Glad you’ve enjoyed them. I try my best to capture the feeling of being out there… doesn’t always translate well. Appreciate the kind words.🙏
Beautiful
I love living vicariously through your hikes. I love the Supes. I have horses. Thats how i travel. I have a bum leg and a rare form of arthritis. Id give anything to hike x 20 mile day. At least i get out threre once a week and do up to 13 miles. My favorite is Massacre grounds and Hackberry. Thank you for videos. I enjoy them so much.
Thanks! I’m glad you’re enjoying them. One of the reasons I’m doing as many of the grueling adventures as I can is because I am well aware that the body is going to give out. If I want to do it, I had better do it right now while the knees and back still work. 👍
Nice climb and video Breven. With the heat I'm impressed you get out at all this time of year.
Hey Mike, I’ve been training for L2H, getting as acclimated as possible to the heat. Of course, with Laura in tow we get out early and we’re home well before it gets hot. She thinks I’m nuts for hiking in the 110* heat. She’s probably right.
@@MoonJuiceHikes L2H? Low to Hi in CA Death Valley?
@@mikefyten7761 yeah man, that’s it! That route is probably right up your alley. You could probably knock it out in 5-6 days. I’m aiming for 8. Calculating ~146 miles. Whitney permit is for the 26th of this month.
@@MoonJuiceHikes Damn dude! Good on you. Hefty stuff but one foot in front of the other gets it done. Sent you an email with another idea.....
So, after the trip, did you feel that you needed the ropes or could you have made it to the top & down without them? It's hard to tell from the video how steep this is and if there are any longer routes to the top that do not require ropes?
Good question. Truth be told, I’ve been up 4 or 5 times since this video. Definitely need a 70m rope. The only people I know of who have solo’d the needle still used ropes to rappel down. Very experienced climbers could definitely climb it without ropes. However, down climbing the first pitch would be insane to me. Near the chock stone, it’s totally vertical and requires a couple of moves that are more like 5.7-5.8 moves. Certain death if you fell from there. As far as I know, this is the only route to the top. Otherwise it’s easy climbing. Really awesome! I’ve got the rope and extra gear if you want to go…
@@MoonJuiceHikes I actually live in Peralta Trails and have hiked to the top of Fremont saddle many times. I've done a number of hikes and backpacked in the Superstitions however I wanted to do one of the difficult ones like Super Ridgeline, Battleship or the top of Weavers needle. I saw Jerry Arizona and his trip to the top of Weavers Needle, and I think your video ended up in my TH-cam feed. Let me know how to get in touch with you if you are heading back up. I'd enjoy the adventure.
Shoot me an email and lets see if we can make it happen. brevenclark@gmail.com
SCARY AF. Not a climber. Looked fun. Question- I have always wondered...What happens to the anchors climbers tie into on the way up and down? Are they just left behind?
No doubt, scary AF is right!!! The small bolts are drilled into the rock. They stay there, climbers bring gear to clip onto them. There are rules regarding when and where you can place bolts… most of these routes have been here for 50 or 60 years, believe it or not!
Hey man, good to see you both are still at it! Great stuff
Thanks Matt! Have you been able to get out much this summer?
@@MoonJuiceHikes not too many times. I was in SC for the summer and did lots of daily walks along a nearby river, but only hiked once or twice in the mountains. I'm in Park City, Utah this week and we're taking advantage of the cool temps and tons of trails. I'm getting my butt kicked on these mountains lol!
I’m not sure how you got your wife to do that with you but super cool you do it together! Are you still planning on doing Low to High?
Yeah man, got a Whitney permit for September 26! Plans for L2H are in the works - really looking forward to that adventure.
Deja vu🤣 The wide angle climbing looked great👍👍
Big difference with the wide angle, you can see your feet!
Just a few friendly notes about your climbing safety. 1. I didn't see any knots in your anchor, it doesn't look redundant, unless your using 2 different slings, but even then it doesn't look right. 2. Your PA preferably should be on top of the belay anchor so that in case your second falls it wont get pinched and you wont be able to move as well. 3. I'd use a belay device instead of grigri in this scenario, it's touching too much rock and can easily get stuck in an unlocked position, especially if your second fell. Praying monk is a fun time in the backyard !
The anchor is the Metolius Equalizer, the instructions didn’t show any additional knots in it? I suppose it would make sense to knot each of the doubled up strands that are attached to both anchors points independently. I’ll do that moving forward. Definitely going to attach my PAS above the anchor, thanks for the pointers!
Love it, man! Good to see some new adventures!
Have you been getting out at all this summer Brandon, or waiting for the cooler temps?
@@MoonJuiceHikes not really, been waiting for the cooler temps. Probably not the smartest move, but planning to do a couple solo overnights this season.
You sure Squarefoot isnt a cousin or something? Theres certainly a resemblance. Maybe enough time on the CT and everyone starts looking the same?
Moonman! Love the contrast of bushwhacking to walking on a sidewalk at the end! Thanks for sharing this, I've always wondered what it was like further upstream!
It was rough, that’s for sure! There’s less water depending on the time of year, and there may or may not be a floating log jam to navigate. All in all, the upper 7 miles is incredibly rugged.
Great video! Can't wait to do this trail soon! What cameras did you use to video this?
That’s a GoPro Hero 11. I’ve got the latest iPhone now, which would be useful to capture some of this amazing scenery! Have fun on the CT, it’s absolutely incredible in every way.
What a beautiful remake of a pink floyd songs !!!!!😊
Moonjuice ????? Do tell😊
Ahhh… MoonJuice is a local IPA, didn’t think carrying a 6 pack on my first multi night trip on the AZT was weird at all… 🍺🍺🍺

So glad I stumbled upon your channel and this hike in particular. Your closing statement so perfectly sums up how I feel. I am running out of time and I need to take action sooner rather than later. Thanks.
You got it man. We’re not getting any of this time back… use it or lose it! Let’s go!!!!
Really enjoyed these videos. As a guy that is roughly your age(I am 57) I so badly need to do this but not sure I will have the opportunity ever. Thanks for sharing and keeping hope alive for some of us.
Glad you enjoyed them! Man, it would be worth spending even a week out there in the San Juans. You don’t have to do the whole thing to have an amazing time. If your fit enough, maybe just pick a 5-7 day stretch. If you can get up in the alpine, you’ll never regret whatever sacrifices you have to make to experience it.
Man whats your tarantula count up to? You're gonna have to change your name to Spiderman if you keep running into them
lol!!! I really only seem to see them in the foothills of the various sky islands… but they are certainly plentiful!
long drive in, long hike (and almost all uphill on the way out), but well worth it!
How is the exposure on the climbing sections? The one shot of you climbing up and down a section didnt look to be near any cliffs. Obviously there were some huge cliffs in the hiking and boulder-hopping parts. If the climbing sections are only 10-20 foot exposures id feel more comfortable soloing this
I think there are 3 short walls you need to scramble up, but if you’re comfortable with class 4 and low level class 5 terrain, it’s not a problem. They’re only 10-15 ft tall. Most of the challenge is figuring out the route, it’s not always so obvious. Best to give yourself plenty of extra time. Really cool hike!
