Intro to Sedona Canyoneering - Mushroom Drops in Boynton Canyon
When your canyoneering buddies invite you to Sedona for an intro to canyoneering adventure, there's not much to say other than YES, let's go!
I've avoided canyoneering primarily because it generally involves rapping into freezing, stagnant and or dark water. Swimming with your gear, fully clothed and then hiking out sopping wet. Doesn't that sound like fun?
I've dipped my toe into adventures like these a couple of times, and fun is not the word I'd use to describe it. However, rappelling into a dry canyon in Sedona is right up my ally. I will note that as a total novice, I find canyoneering to be much more dangerous than rock climbing. It's strange to see almost nothing is backed up. Single sling, single knot, single quick link, single rope, single tiny tree to rapp from. Nerve wracking to say the least...but a heckuva lotta fun!
With @JerryArizona and @walkingwithawookie1097 , between the two of them there's enough experience to safely drag along a hiker like me and literally show me the ropes. Pun intended of course.
Enjoy!

Why I will never buy a Single Wall Dyneema Composite Backpacking Tent

It's a fact: the lighter your pack, the easier the hike. You've heard it before, ounces = pounds and pounds = pain. I can testify to this fact. As a new backpacker, its important to understand what you need to bring with you to ensure you have a comfortable experience, and what you don't need. Every trip could require slightly different gear depending on weather, and of course the length and di...

    When you did this, after you two are sitting down it just shows you on the trail coming from the mine. What Peak did you end up coming down from to get to the bottom trail?

    • @MoonJuiceHikes
      @MoonJuiceHikes 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The mine owners don’t want people cutting through their property. I only saw it from a distance, but it looked like it’s fenced off. The traditional decent off Amethyst takes you right to the mine. We bushwhacked a Ridgeline south of the mine and picked up the pack trail once we got around it. Once you leave Browns, you never see another trail until the pack trail, leaving the mine area.

    Is this harder than mt Whitney one day? Mt Whitney i did but it was brutal especially after you pass 12,000' elevation where the air is thinner. Since san jacinto is lower in elevation , curious on if it's as difficult as one day whitney

      Whitney is 6,500’ of aeg, CTC is 10,800. Mileage is about the same. If you’re affected by altitude it might feel similar, but for me CTC was harder than Whitney. 4,300’ of extra climbing is quite a bit.

    I mean, hiking videos have the same problem as travel videos. People only look up videos specific to the region, then new videos tank if you vlog about a different region. The only people I've seen escape from gear videos are folks who make generalized cinematic videos that cannot be tied to a specific location. We have a lot of those channels in northern Europe. "Camping 21 days self-supported in Finnish wilderness ", "Visiting Khanty reindeer herders", "Hiking the length of Norway without crossing a single road" etc.

    • @MoonJuiceHikes
      @MoonJuiceHikes 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Exactly right. That’s what I do, and that’s generally how I find interesting hikes to do in my area. I make my little videos for people who might want to try the same. No chance they’d ever get popular… which fine by me, seems like a terrible way to turn an amazing hobby into an incredibly demanding job.

      @MoonJuiceHikes Yeah, TheTravwelingClatt covered this 5 years ago in"Why Travel Vlogs Sucks". There's another channel I forgot the name of, but basically if you make advice videos in South Korea, you get a lot of subscribers who are interested in South Korea and if you move to Indinesia, you're starting from zero because none of the subscribers who want to see South Korea content are interested in Indonesia

    Thanks for making a video you didn't want to make, Moon Juice! HA! Funny how the timing on videos in my feed works....just as I start thinking about my 2025 hike and what tent I should consider for the JMT. I used a single wall DCF (ZPacks Altaplex) on my PCT, CT, and TRT thru hikes and got so used to it that I just never thought about (or became numb to) the issues/points you brought up. But....I was gifted a BA Copper Spur UL 1 last year that I used on a two-night spontaneous trip and LOVED that MF'n thing for many of the reasons you mentioned. Well worth the negligible addition in weight and space. Thanks again. ~ Meat Grinder

      @MoonJuiceHikes 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah man, that’s kinda how I feel about it. I love the idea of minimalist backpacking… and definitely see why some people weigh every gram. But everyone has their own subjective comfort level they aim for when it comes to backpacking. Part of the “hike your own hike” approach. There’s not really a right way or a wrong way, but some folks sure think there is only one way (their way) and if you’re not doing it their way, you’re doing it wrong. 😆

    It's pretty funny. If you watch those channels enough, you'll see why they don't make hiking videos; they don't get the views the gear reviews get. Some of them will even outright say they'd rather make hiking videos. But the gear reviews pay the bills. Everybody who camps needs a tent, but only the people hiking a specific trail are gonna watch our hiking videos. But I'm with you. I hate making gear videos. When I get something that works, I'm gonna use it until it breaks. And then I may just re-purchase the same thing. I find videos from Darwin or Steven very informative and Darwin has a lot of hiking videos that he has made over the years. But I agree, there are too many gear videos from algorithm recommended videos. A single wall tent makes sense for thru-hikers, who want to walk a lot of kms every day. Other than that it's not necessary but to each their own.

    I am not into gear videos either. One exception are tents. I want to buy an affordable free standing tent that I can use for thru hiking AND bikepacking without spending a ton of money. The BA Copper Spur looks good. After a long day's hiking or cycling, I want to throw tent on the ground add the poles and I am done. Not into these trekking pole tents as I cant use this tent for bikepacking. What is a good selection? You look as though you own the BA Copper Spur 1P/2P?

    You're completely right! Point number one is the only one that I have ever needed. I don't want to get wet. As a young man I always tried to camp with some super cheap Walmart tent. Always wondered why it was wet inside in the morning. I would go on rants about what's the point of the tent if it's wet inside of. It was always because they were single wall. Took me years to figure out

      Bugs? And in the desert: scorpions. If you take a black light, you see them everywhere at night.

      Yeah man, its bugs. Getting that mosquito buzzing sound around my ears drives me crazy. Though I do like a cowboy camp whenever possible!
