Theresa Lawson's embroidered interpretation of her sister's house and a visit to a Seattle urban art fair were catalysts for what has become a growing needlework design career. That embroidered house prompted many others to hire Theresa to stitch their house as a memory piece. Out of that has grown an embroidery/design business called The Monsters Lounge. In addition to the houses, she creates ...

I think you’d be surprised by the quality of some stitch printed canvases these days. There are two designers in particular that print and I’ve been super happy with the canvases: Jenny Henry, and Poppy Monk. Poppy Monk sells kits with Planet Earth silk and wool and they’re comparatively inexpensive ($50-60 for a 6-inch square canvas and threads). And btw I learned counted canvas 20 years ago by doing one of the kids’ projects on the ANG site! I don’t think they have those anymore, but it was a great intro. One final thought about guilds. Young people don’t seem to be joiners. My son is 24 and the idea of joining a formal group for his hobbies would never appeal to him. So I’m not sure how to get past that.
My library is the best library! No to starting projects.
Congratulations on your retirement! It’s been 9 years and I still LOVE relaxing with my morning coffee and not rushing around to get out of the house!!
Thank you so much! I received the blackwork kit yesterday, Nov 5th. It is so pretty. I will be starting it as my "new year new start" Jan 2025. ❤
Believe me you will enjoy retirement. Life on your terms.
I bald-faced ask etsy cross stitch pattern sellers if they used AI to make the pattern(s.) I will not purchase AI patterns.
Love Ronnie and his designs! Thanks for a wonderful inter!
👍👍
Good show
I follow Ronnie and love his designs and hope to start one next year-the cabin!
I am learning to use Affinity for design with my watercolors. I couldn’t pay the Adobe subscription. There is a ton of videos on TH-cam to help learn it.

Would love to go to this show.
Very interesting to listen about the show. In fall 1974 I took a crewel class from Mrs. A Bolte, sitting at the big round table with 11 other ladies. It was an incredible experience and then we were docents at the show the next year. I treasure my pillow!!!
Great interview and discussion on so many topics that touched me deeply. After various sorts of life-changing events in my life (including having been widowed 2x), it's always been needle and thread applied to fabric--sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc.) that has been the ultimate comfort. It doesn't rush you, urge you to "move on" whatever that is, or make any other claims upon your emotions; it simply lets you work things out with it and all else. It also helps you to push aside your troubles for a while like a mini-vacation; sometimes and hour or so of peace is all you need to be ready to get up and get going.
As a Nelly myself, thanks so much for the 50th Woodlawn Needlework Show shout out coming up March 2025. Hope everyone can attend.
This was very interesting! I would love to visit.
Lovely show…I really enjoyed seeing the canvas work…its not a technique I have tried yet….if I were to fall down the rabbit hole firstly what size stretcher bars would you suggest I start out with? Do you have a show in the archives directed at introducing someone to canvaswork….I guess I would be interested in starting with smalls to see if I like…the needlebook and scissor case were beautiful.! So sad about the USPS bungle😢
I expected it to be over by then...they've changed prayer meeting time, so I will miss the lives. Boo hoo. I thought, surely they are done so I can listen now. Lol. So sad to hear the post office lost Beth's piece. That's horrible!
Question.. I watched a couple of days ago when you talked about floss and supporting your local LNS by buying it there I couldn’t agree more. But were you saying that DMC 310 I might buy in a big box store is inferior in quality to that purchased in the LNS? I thought it would be made the same. I might
Oops. I accidentally pressed send. I might have misunderstood your comment..
Mary, the problem with big box store embroidery floss is that it's handled and displayed with the same care that a bottle of paint would have under their bright lights which can cause embroidery floss colors to alter slightly. For their staff, it's just another item. The LNS will handle and display their materials with great care and not subject their goods to improper lighting. Most shops will have their floss and fabric at the back of their store so that even too much daylight is avoided so that colors are preserved properly. Also, customers don't let children run amok in the stores which I've seen all too often in many big box stores so you can be sure that the stitching materials haven't been grabbed by sticky little fingers or drooled on by a teething toddler. I'm not opposed to big box stores. I shop there for certain items. But when I need top quality for my cross stitching, I'm off to my LNS or a trusted online source such as those that sponsor this show.
@@sandyp2485 thanks much for your reply. That makes sense to me.
I’m a big fan of rug hooking ,enjoyed this conversation, thank you !
Fun to listen! Encouraging attitude to bring to all crafts!!!
Kim you could use the piece of glass to protect the top of an old table
Looking forward to the Sunday podcast. Are you taking up rug hooking?
That would be a no. I’m going to become a master weaver.
@@FiberTalk Once I get my engineering department to take apart your loom so I can mail it.
I inherited my grandmother's fibers. i cleaned up and finished a bunch of cross stitch projects for my siblings and mother. I have at least a dozen quilt tops to make into quilts. Enough to keep me busy for a few years but still plenty of time for my own projects 😂

What an amazing guest. I almost spilled my water laughinh with the bikini story. Thanks for letting people know that it is ok to leave things as they are.

Good Evening everyone.❤ Happy National Son's Day 2024 🎉 InezArnetta 🌹
Great show. We could stitch Mary Corbett’s miniature kits inspired by the Lady & the unicorn tapestry while listening to the book. Full immersion. 😂
I enjoyed the discussion of Tracy Chevalier's novels. I'd like to recommend The Sleep Quilt, by Tracy Chevalier and Fine Cell Work. It's a nonfiction book about the quilt Tracy Chevalier commissioned, "...entirely stitched and quilted by prisoners in some of Britain's toughest jails." It's mainly pictorial, with photos of the men stitching their quilt blocks and the work itself, but there is very compelling text throughout, too. Fine Cell Work is the charity whose volunteers teach needlework in the prisons, make kits for the prisoners, and help sell their finished work. They also provide support in finding post-release jobs in the textile industries.
I've read about Fine Cell Work and visited the website. It' very interesting how stitching can turn a life around.
Good show.
❤❤ Another great job Jennifer Gary🎉and FiberTalk 👏❤

Beth’s stitching basement please
Good luck! ;)
Wow, this discussion hit upon numerous issues I'm struggling through. Like Beth with no kids at home, I also don't have children at home and with retirement no office computer to rush off for in the early morning. I kept up going for a nearly daily walk and eating well (or better with time to cook more) until the lockdowns when these good habits just gradually fell away. While I've resumed the decent cooking (easy to get to the store with no lines to stand in), but other good habits are having a tough time making a come-back. I need to remind myself to get off the computer and do a bit more stitching and take a walk even it's just around the house if it's raining or other bad weather. I also need to get back with other stitchers like at my LNS twice a month gathering because it's so much fun to compare projects and cheer one another on. I also get the problem about overdoing or overextending what one wants to do on a project. I'm totally guilty of adding on things especially sewing projects when it seems too simple. Or searching for that perfect fabric or thread before I start a more interesting or complicated project. Some of my best completed projects are ones where I picked out something last minute, collected whatever I had on hand, and made it in a day or a few days. One time I was actually dressed for an office Christmas party when I realized I didn't have a nice purse for evening. So, knowing my stash, I hastily put together a drawstring purse. My 20 minute quick project brought many compliments. The lesson here is even practicing small aspects of a craft/art can reap big rewards. If I had been a complete novice with my sewing machine or how sew different fabrics, I could not have done the same thing. Applying the same concept to cross stitch or surface embroidery would be like needing a gift but being able to add initials to an item or a little flower or a small spray of leaves on handkerchief. The gift receiver won't know that it only took a half hour to whip that out but it would become a treasured item because you care enough to share a bit of your talent with them. It all just takes practice which might be a good reason to get a piece of your favorite ground cloth and then make your own sampler with motifs you've always wanted to try or threads or new techniques or new stitches. It would be like your personal classroom except no final exams are required to pass.
It was so nice to listen to this interview with a lovely lady. Thanks for discussing the new ways forward for EGA. I'm one of those who wouldn't be able to get to a week-long seminar although it would be totally fabulous, but I could manage a weekend now and then. Also, I was unaware of the regional gatherings. Something for me to check out.
It's sad that the chapters and regions within EGA don't let you know who they are unless you are a chapter member. To be a region member, you must be a chapter member. It's good that EGA is starting to engage the Members at Large (MAL). You can locate your region on the EGA website and then find a chapter within that region. As a former Region Director, I did send an occasional email about regional activities to the MALS that lived within my region.
Fabulous podcast.
You guys are having way to much fun...lol

Not going to happen.
What a wonderful interview! It was so fun…Kelly is a hoot!

I will have to look into this.
I think a trip to the store and look at all the Rainbow Gallery threads is in order. Sometimes it is the thread that makes the difference!
Kreinink makes a Black Patent Leather thread that might give you some shine to the eyes without using beads. I’ve used it before and it is fun.
Kreinik makes a nice blending filament that I’ve added to my “dull” threads. Brings just a bit of sparkle without being overdone.
Beautiful show! Thank you. Jamie! Wow! Love that garden lady too. The bird canvas discussion was full of great suggestions. The wire thread might be good for out lining the foreground leaf. I would like to see that coming to life!
Great idea!
