The Kalashnikov Tapes: Part 3 - Photos of Kalashnikov's Life
This is video is part of a series created from interviews conducted by Edward C. Ezell with Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1989 at the House of Optics in Moscow and at the Museum of Artillery, Engineering & Signal Corp in Leningrad. All the footage is courtesy of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. All I have done is try to fix the audio and cut some of the waiting time between tapes out. So otherwise, what you are seeing is entirely unadulterated.

10:47 was he chatting about a minigun? probably what we saw in Terminator :P
He is americans Werner Gruner.
57:00 is where it's at (I'm actually just using this comment to track my progress since I've turned off youtube history)
Such Immensely Incredibly Humanistic History Amazing Wonderful event Two of the Greatest Engineers in Modern Small Arms History Just Vibing in 1990 Virginia, America Nerdily explaining Gun Trivia to Eachother The Freedom Of Man Know’s No Bounds The Comfort Of Man Know’s No Bounds
It's a real delight to hear how many of the characteristics were borne out of Mr. Stoner's experience in the aircraft industry.
What I don't understand is how and how he justifies the deaths of soldiers during the Vietnam War. When the delivery of his new rifles to the front began. I wonder if he's sorry about what happened,or if he's even apologized to his fellow citizens. Experienced soldiers of the United States of America, who have passed more than one such baptism of fire, died due to a jammed new rifle! His creation was the cause of death when they were unable to defend themselves due to many flaws in his creation.
No Reddit finger. Based
The Bren configuration is just stunning!
Coolest crossover in history
Ahhh Chinese quality....that had to piss him off.
Did Stoner actually speak Russian!?!?!?
I highly doubt this is the first time either of them have seen these rifles and thought about them.
Collaboration on a new design if only!!!
Why would you make a push button to force in dirt or a deformed case?!?!? Rack it and that'll help both of those problems at the cost of one round!
Awsome footage, glad its preserved!
I hope the fact that this is so historic is not lost on anyone! it's like catching 2 lightning bolts in the same jar and I'm so here for it
This video is being recommended to me exactly 34 years. May 20, 2024
The translater is pretty good, he just doesn't know much about gun parts
Seeing them fumble with each others mechanics is hilarious.
Doing all this in @hickcock45s backyard is crazy…
A gentleman that looks nothing like a stoner 😇
I think someone posted this already about MK loving Sunkist orange soda. Bet you could never get that over there. To hell with the AK. Get me American sodas.
What Caliber Is that Hunting Rifle?
Kalashnikov drinking a Sunkist! That's so funny! I love it
these two mfs crossed the iron curtain to make a podcast
A couple of brilliant Patriots from the Cold War. Too bad Mr. AK never received the financial benefits he so richly deserved.
The 6MM ARC is quite a cartridge in 2024.
How the SMITHSONIAN couldn't get a Russian AK is beyond me....
Folks should cut the translator a break. Could they have gotten someone a little better? Sure. But for all we know the translator had a role in bringing this meeting together. Even if he's just some random guy they know from a friend I think most people don't realize how difficult it is to translate something in real time.
East German Aks were the best of all.
coolest range day ever - Stoner shooting an AK and Kalashnikov shooting an AR
Eugene stoner knows more about today's army than today's generals. And they have the advantage of not being dead. Stupid
The private wasn’t stupid he was a genius Think about he did nothing and he got lemon aid juice And help designed the weapon and didn’t even know it
Pov: you and your homie each hadda make a physics project and show it to the teacher and you both passed
when two veterans of an old game shooter meet on one empty server
RIP to two very esteemed gun designers
Russians tend to be very stoic people. You can tell kalashnikov was really enjoying himself by the fact that he smiles alot in this interview. They had alot of respect for one another.
So disrespectful to give him a non Tula AK. They really wanted to shame Kalashnikov however they could
All weapons are invented out of war necessity
Anything can be used as a weapon, even the popsicle stick if you try hard enough
The part that bugs me about the debate (not just talking this video) between which firearm is more sophisticated when disassembling or reassembling, But the AR15/M16 isn’t that bad. If anything, there are parts of the M16 that you *dont* have to bother disassembling because they don’t take much fouling at all. With the AK47, the amount of necessary parts that you need to remove is the dust cover, recoil spring, bolt carrier, bolt and gas tube. With the M16, the amount of necessary parts that you need to remove is the Bolt carrier, charging handle, Firing pin retainer, firing pin, Bolt retainer, bolt and *maybe* the buffertube/recoil spring if it’s that bad (I’m not gonna count them separately, they’re not easy to pull apart and it’s hardly ever necessary to disassemble it anyway). The point that I’m getting at is that the amount of parts for disassembly are similar and the only argument that people have (AK47 fangirls obviously) against the M16 is that some of the parts for disassembly are significantly smaller and hard to find if lost, but I would argue that a man shouldn’t field strip his weapon and place parts willy nilly in the first place. Just so we’re clear, I own both a Colt AR15 and a M70 AK and love them both, I bought the M70 recently and unfortunately for over a thousand dollars, which should show my dedication and respect to the rifle on its own but I know that people aren’t gonna listen to that. I see the AK47 as what it is and nothing more, a crucial chapter in firearms technology and we all know that any military weapon can’t be cutting edge or best the winner forever, something has to give and something is going to incentivize things to change. I know that one day, my AR will one day be looked at as piece of history or as a vintage weapon rather than a modern one because that’s just how the cookie crumbles which I don’t mind at all. Nobody’s a winner in this argument because to be honest, both weapons are starting to be looked at as pieces of history rather than being new or cutting edge. For Christ sake, even the M16A4 was replaced in the Marine’s for reasons that I can’t understand till this day but again, it was bound to happen sooner or later because standards change even when they’re strange.
Stoner is iconic in this hat
At least between the 2 of them there is peace.
Две легенды
I wish politics would end world wide as clearly 25:44 they see they can work together and be friends without a doubt russia and america should be best buds to protect the world not end it... Sword turned into plows..
Kalashnikov looks pretty awesome at his older age he is like blasting away with that high end ammo lol
13:00 funny
I'm a licensed engineer and have been so for 35 years. Mr. Stoner is the classical engineer of the 50's, 60's and 70's with the suit, tie, and pocket protector/pen set in addition to the technical/methodical way he speaks about the rifle. Reminds me so much of my own career and utmost respect for Mr. Stoner.
HE KINDA REMINDS ME OF ERNST VERVIER ,WHO DESIGNED THE MAG 58 AND THE SAW. DIUDONNE SAIVE OF HI- POWER/. FN FAL FAME, REMINDS ME OF COL. SANDERS.
